SHANGHAI, Oct 9 (Reuters) – China’s yuan held
steady against the U.S.
dollar on Wednesday, as investors awaited more stimulus from the world’s second-largest economy and the Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes due later in the day to gauge its policy path.
The dollar held steady, giving some relief to the yuan after a sharp rally to a seven-week high last week.

Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last trading 12 pips
lower than the previous late session close at 7.066.
Prior to the market opening, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set the midpoint rate, around which the yuan is allowed to trade in a 2% band, at
7.0568 per dollar, only 3 pips weaker than a Reuters’
estimate.

China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the first time since Sept.
13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials on Tuesday failed to offer much
new on stimulus plans to revive the economy.
The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month, due to broad
dollar strength, but the currency has 0.5% firmed for the year-to-date.

China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside surprise from expected fiscal stimulus news, said UBS
strategists led by Rohit Arora, adding that the
offshore yuan’s near-term risk reward is unattractive. «Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,»
the strategists said.

Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting additional stimulus measures
that could help further lift China asset sentiment.

Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade well if local equities remain supported, similar
to what happened in Nov. 2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the bank’s note to
clients.
The offshore yuan traded at 7.0682 yuan per dollar, up about 0.09% in Asian trade.

The Joker’s real identity was revealed in Folie à Deux’s ‘brutal ending’ – and it’s
not who you think. 

Identity confusion is the theme throughout the entire film, as the title
suggests, but the ending of the second instalment may leave some fans
surprised. 

Following on from 2019’s psychological thriller
from director Todd Phillips, Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as clown Arthur Fleck who has descended into mental illness. 

Folie à Deux begins with Arthur behind bars in Arkham Asylum, waiting to
see whether he will be judged sane enough to stand
trial for the murders he committed two years prior.   

In the meantime he is enjoying his celebrity status with
fellow prisoners and even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic
Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Lady Gaga plays Harleen ‘Lee’ Quinzel, a fellow inmate on her way, fans believe, to becoming Joker’s
girlfriend Harley Quinn. 

The pair hit it off at a music therapy class, and are soon mutually smitten, but
Lee makes it clear that she loves the dangerously charismatic Joker,
‘clown prince of crime’, not the gloomily introspective Arthur.

Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance with a smug interviewer played by Steve
Coogan, it is time for the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by
the subject of multiple personality disorder. 

His lawyer (Catherine Keener) strives to show that Joke is accused
of five murders, rather than Arthur. Lee just as urgently wants him to identify as his demonic
alter ego. 

In the final scenes, Arthur renounces his Joker alter-ego and is found guilty of first-degree murder.

As he is being sentenced a car bomb detonates outside the court, with two people
helping Arthur escape, but he is later caught by the police and
taken back to Arkham. 

In the Asylum a young patient begins to tell Arthur a
joke, before stabbing him in the stomach and while
he bleeds to death, carves a smile into his own face. 

It raises questions surrounding the Joker’s true identity,
as it would seem he never went on to become the famed villain, instead he
was just the person who inspired the man who eventually became him.

he’s always been Arthur Fleck; he’s never been this thing that’s been put upon him, this
idea that Gotham people put on him, that he represents. 

‘He’s an unwitting icon. This thing was placed on him, and he
doesn’t want to live as a fake anymore — he wants to be who he is.’

The movie serves as a follow-up to Phoenix’s 2019 box office hit, which was
simply titled Joker. 

The Todd Phillips-directed musical was released in theatres on October 4,
following an October 2 international release.

Amid tepid returns at the box office for Joker: Folie à Deux, a number of fans of
the sequel took to social media over the weekend in defense of the
sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

The film, which sees Joaquin Phoenix return to the lead role of The Joker/Arthur
Fleck, debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good
enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and
half that of its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth,

sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the
franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to

Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first

One fan predicted that the motion picture with stand
the test of time with audiences.

‘I may be one of ten people who genuinely
liked the Joker 2. Remember me when society circles back to it in 10 years and
says its a masterpiece,’ said the user. ‘The world just wasn’t ready for it yet.’

Said one user: ‘I actually thoroughly enjoyed it. If you don’t like musicals or ‘art house’ style films you probably won’t like it because it’s not made for you.
The dynamic between Harley and Joker was brilliant and
showcased the ‘obsession’ that is key to that duo.’ 

The movie’s box office collapse was swift and has many in the
industry wondering: How did the highly anticipated sequel to an Oscar-winning,
billion-dollar film with the same creative team go wrong?
Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged
the movie for a $70 million debut, which would still have been down a fair amount from Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch in October
2019. 

A number of fans took to social media to defend
the controversial sequel

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and
its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to
introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise 

Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival, where it premiered
in competition like the first movie and even got a 12-minute standing ovation.

But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and the fragile foundation would crumble in the coming weeks with its Rotten Tomatoes
score dropping from 63 percent at Venice to 33 percent by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps even more surprising were the
audience reviews: Ticket buyers polled on opening night gave
the film a deadly D CinemaScore. Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t
any better. It got a meager half star out of five possible.

‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult
to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.

‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget. A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be a solid debut.’

Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film to produce, though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey
it was to make. Phillips told Variety that it was less than the
reported $200 million; Others have it pegged at $190 million.
Warner Bros. released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.

Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing its total
global earnings estimate to $121.1 million.
In the next two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.

Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s
The Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its second weekend,
bringing its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice  took third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and
Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the top
five.

The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from just over
1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.

Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s start is an unwelcome
twist for theater owners hoping to narrow the box office deficit.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit
that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie

Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make something
as ‘audacious’ as the first film. The sequel added
Lady Gaga into the fold , as a Joker superfan, and delved further
into the mind of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham and awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the first.
It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and dance numbers to old standards.
Gaga even released a companion album called »Harlequin,’ alongside the film.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie.

In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore the advice of critics, especially when it comes to opening their wallets to see revered comic book characters on the big
screen.

‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.

‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want
to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the theater.
They want the tried and true, the familiar.’ 

Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem
started with the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical.
‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.

The first film was also divisive and the subject of
much discourse, then about whether it might send the wrong message to the wrong type of person. And yet people still flocked to see what the fuss was about.

Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director,
and three wins. It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film
of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine took the crown.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.
and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic
figures will be released Monday.

opting to fly with Qantas on taxpayer-funded trips, despite Virgin offering cheaper tickets.

Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of work trips
last year despite it not always being the cheapest route, according to
travel data provided to the government.

While politicians and their staffers are required to book the cheapest flight, it also has to be the most efficient,
with Qantas offering the most routes between major cities.

MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like
ordinary Aussies can, but they can can receive lifetime status
credits, which allows access to airport lounges and flight upgrades.

‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance
of Qantas in securing bookings by parliamentarians and their
staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review.

‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone
else’s dime.’

Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings
by government officials which will be conducted by the Department of Finance
this year, despite there being just two months left of
2024.

Oct 22 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International’s (PMI) shares hit
record highs on Tuesday after the cigarette maker raised its annual profit forecast and
beat third-quarter estimates thanks to higher prices
and strong demand for its smoking alternatives.

PMI has invested billions of dollars in developing substitutes
for cigarettes as health-conscious consumers switch to smoking alternatives in some markets, including its IQOS heated tobacco device and ZYN nicotine
pouches, which are now a key focus for investors.

U.S. ZYN shipments in the quarter grew 41.4% over the prior-year period, rebounding after supply constraints curtailed rapid growth.
The Marlboro maker has been investing to expand production capacity for ZYN, in an effort to meet
strong demand.

The company’s flagship heated tobacco device, IQOS, also saw strong growth in regions such as Japan, Europe and Indonesia,
reassuring investors after volumes lagged expectations in the past.

«We delivered exceptionally strong performance, with record quarterly net revenues and earnings per share,» said Chief
Executive Officer Jacek Olczak, adding IQOS growth had also accelerated.

PMI’s shares rose 9%, and remained almost 8% higher at 11.43 a.m.
(1543 GMT) in New York trading.

The company also enjoyed higher shipment volumes for cigarettes,
with higher pricing also driving a 5.2% increase in revenues from its
combustible tobacco business.

PMI raised its forecast for 2024 adjusted earnings
per share, excluding currency, to between $6.85 and $6.91, compared with its prior range of $6.67
to $6.79.

It reported revenue of $9.91 billion for the
third quarter, versus analysts’ estimates of $9.69 billion, according to data
compiled by LSEG.

Its quarterly adjusted profit of $1.91 per share also beat estimates of $1.82 per share.

Last week, Philip Morris said it, along with peers British
American Tobacco and Japan Tobacco, would pay C$32.5 billion ($23.6 billion) to settle long-running health-related
