Amigas y amigos, buenas noches,
Mis primeras palabras deben ser de agradecimiento al Excel·lentísim Señor Alcalde, Juan Ribó, y la Junta Central Fallera, por concederme el honor que supone para un estudioso de la fiesta y aragonés de origen, fue esta noche el mantenedor de nuestra Fallera Mayor y de las damas de su corte de honor. Nunca había podido imaginar este privilegio, que también es un compromiso.
En las conversaciones que he mantenido con Alicia Moreno, hemos hablado de su militancia fallera desde los ocho años, de sus tempranas inquietudes culturales ( «a mí me daban un libro, y me podían dejar tranquila»), de sus expectativas vitales (mujer independiente, con una ocupación profesional consolidada, emprendedora, deportista, amante del cine y de la música), que habiendo cursado una carrera tecnológica (ingeniería técnica de telecomunicaciones) siendo una pequeña frustración por no haber podido ejercerla todavía.
Pero, sobre todo, sobre todo, hemos hablado de las Fallas y, en un momento determinado, le he preguntado por las características que debería tener para ella una falla ideal. Dada la celeridad con la que ha respondido, su visión es clara y firme. Ha subrayado especialmente tres y empezaré por la tercera.
LA vERTICALIDAD
Una falla debe destacarse, ser llamativa y airosa, atraer y seducir desde lejos.
Por parece, la construiremos en nuestra imaginación entre todas y todos. Yo creo que el remate de la falla debería ser un arca, un cofre o un baúl. Que cada uno elija. Eso sí, está abierto y contiene toda la extensa e intensa historia de esta fiesta. Es más, al mirar en su interior, no sólo vemos los objetos materiales en que se ha plasmado, cobrando vida en hologramas todos los monumentos y libretos, sino sus escenas más entrañables: plantà, despertó, pasacalles, animación y bullicio, ofrenda , los niños y niñas arrastrando las alfombrillas viejitas …
Si nos fijamos en el arca podemos ver aquel Oficio del Corregidor de la ciudad de 1784 que solicitaba que «no se permitia acero fallas miedo las calles en la noche víspera de San José, sino en las Plazas».
También vemos una hoja del periódico El Cid del 19 de marzo de 1849 donde dice «el presente año ha Sido un furor de Fallas.Hablamos de las que merecía el número de talas, pues si a aplicar fueramos el dictada todos los monigotes y trastos viejos que se dan de baja en está ocasionando, deberiamos Decir cono Quevedo: «Puede el guarismo legar a miles» «. Y aún le faltaba incluir «las innumerables y Pequeñas hogueras» que siguiendo la costumbre encendían los agricultores «en las puertas de sobre barracas y alquerías», en el toque de oración, en obsequio a san José.
Las Fallas y, en general, la fiesta popular eran miradas con recelo por las autoridades y por la prensa burguesa. En realidad, desde que tenemos noticias fiables hasta 1901, el Ayuntamiento las trató como una expresión que inevitablemente tenía que tolerar pero que no le gustaba, que desentonaban con el proyecto de ciudad moderna impulsado desde el poder municipal. Por ello, se dictaban órdenes de precaución, eran prohibidas, se ponían impuestos para plantarlas y se practicaba la censura.
Por primera vez en 1901, el Ayuntamiento destinó 150 pesetas a la fiesta. Saben cuánto se gastó ese año en la Feria de Julio? Más de 92.000 pesetas; para el Corpus, 9000, y para el Carnaval, casi 6.000. Estas eran las tres fiestas importantes. Las fallas se quemaban en la víspera de San José y tan sólo eran eso: fuegos de víspera.
Sin embargo, su arraigo era como la primavera o como un torrente de agua, que no se puede reprimir o detener, y fueron abriéndose camino entre las otras fiestas. Las élites y autoridades, pragmáticas, optaron entonces por canalizarlas y modernizarse mediante el anzuelo de los premios y la proyección turística.
Es importante dejarlo claro: las canalizaron, sin poder dominarlas.
Décadas después (entre 1927 y 1932) se convertirían en la fiesta principal de la ciudad, la fiesta por antonomasia, la fiesta de la identidad valenciana.
Qué salto tan extraordinario en estos dos segles¡
Primero una fiesta vecinal, del común de los vecinos, como las fiestas de calle, que también gozaba de un gran arraigo. «Porque decir falla – decía el Libro de la calle de la Paz de 1924- es la calle, chirigota, buñuelos, hermandad entre vecinos en un ambiente popular».
Después se convirtieron en una fiesta municipal y pública: en 1927, se creaba el Comité Central Fallero, que daría paso a la Asociación General Fallera; en 1929, se estrenaba el himno fallero; en 1932, el Ayuntamiento asumió una participación activa en la fiesta.
Y en la actualidad, en el siglo XXI, en 2016, con aspiraciones legítimas para ser reconocida como una fiesta global, Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad.
Comunal, pública, global. No hay que perder de vista lo que estas palabras significan e implican. ¿Qué requisitos se necesitan para que una fiesta sea declarada Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad? Al final, volveré al respecto.
FAM, FEM, HUMO … FUEGO!
Continuamos. La primera característica de una falla ideal, según Alicia, es la sátira; las fallas deben desbordar humor y ser críticas, purificadoras.
Efectivamente, la sátira no es una parte más del monumento -por ejemplo, las escenas de la base-, es su alma y esencia, la sangre, que recorre capilarmente todas las figuras y piezas.
De hecho, la sátira constituye un rasgo sustancial de nuestra cultura, como bien muestra el éxito de las numerosas revistas y periódicos -recordemos por ejemplo La Traca, que ahora podemos conocer gracias a la digitalización de la Biblioteca Valenciana.
En este sentido, el librito de la comisión Organista Plasencia-Maestro León (1933) decía:
Muchos creen que las fallas
Un monumento deben ser
Y el mérito es la metralla
Que se lleva en el argumento.
Hechas de materiales humildes, las fallas se nutren del ingenio, pero deben ir más lejos; requieren gracia, pero no son complacientes.En la calle de la Beata, editaba un periódico, El Hacemos, que llevaba por subtítulo «Periódico destinado a barrer todas las inmoralidades españolas»; los falleros de las calles Gracia-Padilla sacaron la cabecera El Hambre, y en muchas aparecía un discurso que condensaba un diagnóstico crítico de la situación social en tres palabras -Hacemos, FAM, humo- y que buscaban en el FUEGO una limpieza y purificación.
Así, la revista El Tabalet (1847) decía en uno de sus versos:
En los margenes del Júcar
No se cría hoy otro ensisam
Sino los tres referidos
A saber HUMO, FEM y FAM.
Como hoy se dice en el lenguaje del cine, con muchas de esas fallas podríamos hacer un remake y con algunos pequeños cambios de lenguaje (prima de riesgo, inflación, corrupción, recortes, paro, precariedad, deuda, etc.) resonarían de plena actualidad.
En la falla Cruce de Gracia-Turno (1888):
Si las cosas van así
Y tanto el dogal aprietan
Ni siquiera para atún
Las labores ya nos prestan.
Y en la calle Alboraya de 1918 remataban:
Los chornals están por suelo
La Industria parálisis,
La Agricultura morintse,
el Comers boqueando
y el globo pucha que pucha
sin miedo, sin piedad.
Cómo funcionaba la censura aquellos anys¡¡ Primero, había que presentar los bocetos y libretos. En el Ayuntamiento se conservan con las marcas de las prohibiciones.
Tras la plantà llegaba la segunda inspección. Una crónica periodística refiere con humor que «Los municipales recorrieron las fallas, aquí afeitado una, allá eliminar un Personaje, más allá descoronar a una matrona y acullá derribo un símbolo: en un periquete quedarón como Nuevas».
Pues, sí, la sátira es el elemento fundamental, si de Fallas hablamos.
EL MUNDO FALLERO
Ya tenemos la tercera característica -la verticalitat- y también la primera -la sátira. Cuál es la segunda?
Yo no sería justo con las palabras de Alicia si no colocara realmente en primer lugar, en vez de la sátira, los protagonistas que la hacen viable: el mundo fallero, las comisiones y todas las personas que de una u otra , hacen la fiesta, recordando especialmente artistas, músicos, pirotécnicos, indumentaristas, buñuelos y floristerías … Todo un universo rico y complejo que ha crecido con el tiempo y que arrastra una participación directa de cientos de miles de personas.
Sin su aliento, el alma de las fallas, la sátira, no se materializaría; y los cartones, maderas, vestidos, pinturas, no se convertirían por unos días en arte efímero que inunda las calles y tampoco prenderían fuego la noche de la Cremà.
Todo ese universo social está hoy condensado aquí, en ti, Alicia, y en las damas de tu Corte de Honor.
Este año tenemos una Fallera Mayor que proviene de una comisión de barrio, periférica, del Marítimo, en concreto de la comisión Doctor Álvaro López-San Juan de Dios. Alicia ha expresado su orgullo de sentir que por primera vez una comisión de la periferia de la ciudad alcanza la máxima representación simbólica. Y junto con ella, también otras comisiones de las damas de la corte.
De sus compañeras, dice Alicia que «cada una tiene algo especial que hace que el grupo esté completo».

Ya tenemos las tres características fundamentales de las Fallas: participación vecinal, sátira, verticalidad.
LOS VALORES DEL PATRIMONIO
Y es esta falla -en la que en un baúl mágico hemos colocado toda su historia- la que aspira a ser reconocida como Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad. Quiero llamar su atención sobre el término HUMANIDAD, una palabra densa, si los hay, con muchas implicaciones y dimensiones. Una palabra que no se puede utilizar a la ligera.
¿Qué significa Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad?
Como ha sido definido por UNESCO?
Leer las palabras de la Convención que lo regula porque tenemos que ser conscientes del significado e implicaciones:
Se entiende por «patrimonio cultural inmaterial» los usos, representaciones, expresiones, conocimientos y técnicas -junto con los instrumentos, objetos, artefactos y espacios culturales que les son inherentes que las comunidades, los grupos y en algunos casos los individuos reconozcan como parte integrante de su patrimonio cultural.
Este patrimonio cultural inmaterial, que se transmite de generación en generación, es recreado constantemente por las comunidades y grupos en función de su entorno, su interacción con la naturaleza y su historia, infundiéndoles un sentimiento de identidad y continuidad, y contribuyendo así a promover el respeto de la diversidad cultural y la creatividad humana.
A efectos de la presente Convención, se tendrá en cuenta únicamente el patrimonio cultural inmaterial que sea compatible con los instrumentos internacionales de derechos humanos existentes y con los imperativos de respeto mutuo entre comunidades, grupos e individuos y de desarrollo sostenible.
Esta definición, que, como se puede imaginar, ha sido resultado de muchos debates y negociaciones, se debe asumir en su totalidad.Desde mi punto de vista, no puede ser más completa y acertada en todos sus términos y elementos. Me permitiréis que señale cuatro:
- El patrimonio siempre es una selección de determinados aspectos del pasado. En nuestro baúl hemos colocado toda la historia de las Fallas, pero es imposible mantener vivo todo. Muchas cosas no volverán y es mejor así: hay prácticas peligrosas que han sido superadas, civilizadas, podríamos decir.
- Por eso mismo, el patrimonio está vivo y -como dice la UNESCO- es recreado constantemente. La fiesta no es un fósil. Está viva y, como todo lo que se vive, cambia.
- Como se practica la selección y como se define lo que es patrimonio? En el caso de las Fallas, a través de la estructura de sus comisiones. En ellas se recrea el sentido de comunidad. Ahora bien, no hay comunidad verdadera si no se funda en el arte o las reglas de la civilidad. La comunidad de la que habla la UNESCO debe ser inclusiva y respetuosa de la diversidad. No puede funcionar como un club privado, selecto y elitista; muy al contrario, deberá ser un espacio social abierto e inclusivo; si me permiten la expresión, una escuela de democracia. Contra la vida apresurada y agitada de cada día, a medio camino entre la familia y el lugar de trabajo, las comisiones y los vecindarios de donde nacen pueden ser crisoles de vida cívica … espacios donde se aprende la confianza, la responsabilidad y la solidaridad.
- Pero, sobre todo, la definición de la UNESCO recalca que -a efectos de dicha Convención- sólo podrán ser consideradas aquellas prácticas que expresan valores reconocidos: respeto a la diversidad cultural y la creatividad humana, a los derechos humanos y al desarrollo sostenible.
Por tanto, el patrimonio tiene que ver con el presente y el futuro más que con el pasado; y el patrimonio de la humanidad debe ser lo que se merecen las generaciones futuras; es memoria, pero también utopía; está tejido de filamentos y fibras del pasado, pero sobre todo de nuestros ideales sueños y esperanzas proyectadas hacia el futuro.
Estos ideales deben desbordar por cofre, arca o baúl del remate de nuestra falla, porque un fuego transparente, agitado, vivo y luminoso, sacsege y reduzca a cenizas el FEM, la FAM y el FUM, y podamos decir con Miquel Durán de Valencia:
Será una hermosa noche, la noche iluminada:
La luz coronará las sierras valencianas
y surgirá indomable el fuego de los ideales.
Querida Alicia, queridas compañeras de su Corte de Honor, en adelante representa nuestra ciudad en lo más querido, noble y bello. Es una responsabilidad que ha asumido conscientes, con entusiasmo, y que os agradecemos de todo corazón. Sabéis que será una experiencia perdurable en sus vidas. Deseo que la Noche de la Cremà vosotros también viváis y compartir con todas y todos, estas palabras:
