La declaración de la guerra de Cuba y la Guerra Civil española llevaron a suspender las Fallas en Valencia, que también vio, en 1886, sus calles sin catafalcos porque los falleros se negaron a pagar la tasa para plantarlos en la calle, una sombra que se cierne de nuevo a causa de la epidemia de coronavirus.
El fantasma de una nueva suspensión sobrevuela las Fallas de Valencia de 2020, llena de actos multitudinarios del 15 al 19 de marzo, por el brote que ha causado miles de muertos y contagiados en todo el mundo y suspendido actividades masivas como el Mobile World Congress de Barcelona y los carnavales de Venecia, además de extender el control de fronteras en muchos países.
De momento, las autoridades confirman que se mantiene la celebración de esta fiesta Patrimonio de la Humanidad aunque ya han obligado a que se jueguen a puerta cerrada el partido de Euroliga de baloncesto Valencia Basket-Armani Milán y el de la Liga de Campeones de fútbol Valencia-Atalanta.
El Ministerio de Salud ha confirmado que en España, hasta este sábado, se han producido más de 430 contagios y un total de diez muertes, con Madrid, País Vasco, La Rioja y la Comunitat Valenciana como regiones más afectadas.
Aunque la primera referencia documentada de las Fallas se remonta a 1774, no es hasta 74 años después cuando se pueden encontrar publicaciones continuadas sobre la fiesta josefina, según relata a EFE el historiador, documentalista y miembro de la Junta Central Fallera de Valencia Javier Mozas.
En 1896, el gobernador civil de Valencia declaró el estado de guerra por el enfrentamiento bélico de España con los Estados Unidos en la conocida como guerra de Cuba y «se decidió no celebrar las Fallas a dos días de su inicio», señala Mozas.
Esto supuso «la primera suspensión de las Fallas», aunque se sabe que hubo catafalcos que se guardaron y se plantaron al año siguiente, «porque está contrastado que los bocetos son los mismos».
También se suspendieron las fiestas durante los años 1937, 1938 y 1939 con motivo de la Guerra Civil española. Las de 1936 se celebraron sin problema, pues el alzamiento se produjo el 17 de julio.
«Cuando empieza la guerra, muchas comisiones falleras empezaron a destinar el dinero recaudado de las Fallas a la causa republicana. En un momento, se decidió que no se plantaran fallas para evitar que la multitud que convocaran pudiera atraer una bomba o una desgracia», añade.
La Guerra Civil acabó el 1 de abril de 1939 por lo que ese año, por quinta vez en la historia -la cuarta provocada por una suspensión propiamente dicha- tampoco se plantaron monumentos falleros por las calles de Valencia.
Sin embargo, la primera vez que se tiene referencia de que los monumentos falleros no se plantaron fue en 1886, aunque en aquella ocasión fueron los falleros «de forma individualizada» los que no pagaron la tasa de 60 pesetas que se cobraba como canon desde 1851 por plantar los catafalcos en las calles.
«Al principio se pagaban 5 pesetas pero a los gobernantes no les gustó nada que se metieran con ellos en unas fiestas muy populares, y como eran muy burgueses quisieron acaban con ellas obligando a pagar cada vez más para que desaparecieran; y efectivamente, fueron a menos hasta que en 1886 ninguna comisión plantó falla», explica.
No obstante, recuerda que ese año sí se tiene noticia de que se plantaron dos fallas de manera privada en dos patios interiores que nadie visitó, «pero ninguna por las calles de València».
Tras estos cinco momentos históricos, València no ha vuelto a vivir un año sin Fallas aunque sí ha suspendido actos concretos, especialmente por adversidades meteorológicas o sucesos como los atentados del 11M de 2004 en Madrid, en los que se suspendieron todos los actos oficiales durante los tres días de luto.
