ANGELA HARTNETT’S BEEF & VEAL MEATBALLS
Meatballs are super-quick to make for a weeknight supper and there are many
ways to serve them (see tip). The veal in these gives
a lightness to the result, but you can swap it out for all beef, or flavourful pork mince.
This is a good way to use up any day-old bread hanging around.
The recipe is easy to double up on and freeze so you have a meal for an emergency.

SERVES 4

4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the onion

1 onion, finely chopped

2 garlic cloves, chopped

400g tin chopped tomatoes

200g white bread (day old, if possible)

whole milk (enough to soak the bread)

500g beef mince

250g English veal mince

2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve

4 anchovies, finely chopped

2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley

salt and freshly ground black pepper

350g dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; see tip)

1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash of
olive oil over a medium heat, then add half the chopped onion and half the garlic, then sauté for 10 minutes to soften. Add
the tomatoes and when the liquid starts to bubble,
reduce to a simmer and leave to cook, stirring occasionally (about 20 minutes, to create a thick sauce), while you make the meatballs.

2 In a bowl, soak the bread in the milk until soft. In another bowl, mix the
beef, veal, parmesan, anchovies, half the parsley and the
rest of the onions and garlic. Then add the soaked
bread, lightly squeezing any excess milk from it first. Mix well
and season with salt and pepper. Mould the mixture into 12-14
meatballs.

3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat.
When hot, add the meatballs, turning (for about 5 minutes) to ensure
they colour all over. If necessary, cook in batches so they are not
all squashed together, setting each batch aside on a plate while
you cook the remainder.

4 To finish, remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside.
Pour the tomato sauce into the frying pan over a medium heat.
Put the meatballs back into the pan for a further 4-5 minutes to cook through.
Sprinkle with the remaining parsley before serving.

TIP You can serve the meatballs as they come, or on top of spaghetti.
If you would prefer the latter, cook the pasta according to the packet instructions
until al dente. Drain it in a colander, reserving
a cupful of the cooking water to loosen the meatball sauce if necessary, and then transfer
it back to the pan and toss it with a little olive oil and butter.
Put the spaghetti on a serving plate and top with the meatballs and
sauce. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle
of parmesan.

They had their gloves on at the end of the last season of Real Housewives
of New Jersey.

And it seems little has changed between Teresa Giudice
and her brother, Joe Gorga, who are said to be back
at it again at the start of filming for season five.

Fox News Correspondent Tom Murro told RadarOnline.com the siblings were involved in a screaming
match during a recent shoot, after she failed to visit him in hospital.

The reality star, who has long feuded with Joe’s wife, Melissa Gorga, dragged her sister-in-law
into the feud.

Joe blasted his sister for bringing up Melissa, and cameras are said to have captured the siblings trading barbs.

Insults were slinging between Melissa and Teresa late last year, with the
former accusing her sister-in-law of orchestrating a ‘vindictive and disgusting’ set-up to expose her alleged past as a stripper.

Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with Alan Joyce was a strictly professional one between a Prime Minister
and a corporate titan, as he battles claims the Qantas boss was his ‘personal travel
agent’ for free flights and upgrades.

However that characterization of the relationship was at odds
with that made by Mr Joyce, who said he was ‘good mates’ with Mr Albanese and had
been ‘for years’.

In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime Minister had Mr Joyce arrange free tickets and upgrades, Mr Albanese
distanced himself from the Qantas chief.

When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr Albanese implied it was purely in a professional capacity, having been Transport Minister and shadow
transport spokesperson before becoming Prime Minister. 

‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline …

I had the same relationship with him that I have with John Borghetti as the CEO of Virgin,’ Mr
Albanese said.

That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s company. 

Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the red
carpet at the Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last year.

In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet with one arm around the prime minister
and the other around Mr Albanese’s partner, Jodie
Haydon.

Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese attended Qantas’s unveiling of it’s special ‘Yes
23′ emblazoned airplanes for the Voice referendum.

Mr Joyce was seen touching Mr Albanese’s arm, with the PM bursting
into laughter.

Even when Scott Morrison was PM,  Mr Joyce enjoyed an apparently close relationship with
Mr Albanese as the pair stood close together at the launch of the Qantas’ landmark Perth to London flight in March,
2018. 

During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he
had been ‘friends for years’ with Mr Albanese.

Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a membership to the prestigious and
exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce refused to confirm or deny but talked up his relationship with the Prime Minister.

‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’ Mr Joyce said. 

However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied the Prime Minister
on the controversial decision to lock competitor Qatar
Airways out of domestic routes.

It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge, by former Australian Financial
Review columnist Joe Aston that Ms Haydon is also
a Chairman’s Lounge member.

Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades
from economy from Qantas and he would liaise personally with the former airline boss for them. 

Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted
Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs to
ask for special upgrades for himself or his family.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received
upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu, with some being for holidays.

Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for work purposes and all were
‘declared in the appropriate way’.    

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt
on the accusations describing Mr Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of Mr Joyce. 

Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’
Mr Albanese had directly contacted Mr Joyce to request upgrades
while holding a regulatory position in the transport sector.

‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up the phone to one of the most important stakeholders in the portfolio asking for a
free upgrade, then again, I think the Prime Minister would be able to answer those questions more effectively than anyone else because
I’m not aware of anyone else having done it,
‘ Mr Dutton said.

It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge

The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce for upgrades on Tuesday at
press conference in the NSW city of Newcastle.

‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through calls – we discussed the first flight from Australia to Dubai on the A380,’ he said.

‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of the rules.’

Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah Ferguson about how confident he was that
Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.

‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.

Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying to block UAE
airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to think that the Prime Minister’s
office had nothing to do with the decision.

‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the Albanese government that would not go through the Prime Minister’s office,’ Aston replied.

He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market Qatar had seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister
Catherine King speaking warmly about the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to stop
it dead in tracks. 

 Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar was due to Qantas
lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.

Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade received from Qantas the Australian Financial Review reported on Tuesday that he failed to do for his former wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled together.

Sky New host Sharri Markson on Monday night labeled Mr Joyce as ‘basically Albanese’s personal travel agent.’

‘This is all a question of integrity. Most Australians struggle to afford even an economy airfare.
They’d never be able to afford the luxury of business class.
It’s out of our reach,’ she said.

‘Can Albanese truly be impartial when it comes to making decisions
about Qantas when he’s been getting tens of thousands of dollars
worth of free upgrades to business class? The revelations puts
the decision he made as transport minister and prime minister under a cloud.

‘Aside from the integrity issues, this revelation is also politically
lethal. Albanese took care to curate a self-image of a housing commission boy who made it.
But now the perception is cementing of a long-term pollie enjoying the
perks of public office.’

Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s  apparent close relationship with Mr Joyce is that
the Labor leader in a trade unionist advocate while Qantas attempted to
break the power of the Transport Workers Union by sacking 1700 staff during Covid. 

The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal
Court in a case brought by the union with Qantas facing possible hundreds of thousands in compensation payouts. 

The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio star
Neil Mitchell. 

‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote on X.

‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having Alan Joyce
as a bestie? Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

All six senior members of the new federal anti-corruption watchdog have accepted Qantas Chairman’s Lounge memberships as
calls grow to refer Anthony Albanese over the perks he took from the
airline. 

Gift disclosure logs for the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) leadership positions show commissioners are all part of Australia’s ‘most exclusive club’
the Chairman’s Lounge membership extended by invite only by the Qantas chair.

This has raised concerns over how impartial the body would be when dealing with Qantas matters. 

If Mr Albanese has requested flight upgrades from former Qantas CEO
Alan Joyce directly, as reported in a new book, he may have fallen foul of the strict Ministerial Code of Conduct which prohibits ministers from seeking ‘any kind
of benefit’ 

Commissioner Paul Brereton declared Chairman’s Lounge
membership in 2023, as did the CEO Philip Reed and deputy
commissioners Jaala Hinchcliffe and Nicole Rose, Sky News reported on Wednesday. 

Deputy commissioners Ben Gauntlett and Kylie Kilgour declared their membership in February
2024, which means it was after the NACC began operation in July 2023.

states. 

‘Service is discrete yet attentive, providing friendly and
efficient food and beverage offerings that meets our passengers’
expectations.’

Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining environment and
the ability to work a seven- day rotating roster.

The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy
when booking Qantas flight by personally requesting them from Mr Joyce are made in a

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los
Angeles and Honolulu.

The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having
a ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Lounge membership Mr Albanese’s partner Jodie
Haydon did as well. 

Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.

A billionaire couple have won the right to remove a single tree from the driveway
of their lavish $20million mansion after being blocked by their local council. 

Paul Holmes a Court, the son of Australia’s first
billionaire Robert Holmes a Court, and his wife Zara had been at loggerheads with their local council
over a request to remove a single peppermint tree growing in the middle of their driveway.

The couple bought the four-bedroom mansion in the affluent,
tree-lined suburb overlooking Perth’s Freshwater Bay
for $20.1million in August.

They wanted to remove the tree but the Shire of Peppermint Grove refused the request on the grounds the tree was not dead or deceased. 

‘We are very lucky to live here, but I have to say that the tree placement is unusual,’ Ms
Holmes a Court previously told a council meeting. 

‘I’m quite a reasonable and rational person, but a tree in the middle of the driveway makes it
quite tricky to reverse out.’

The couple enjoyed a breakthrough at a council meeting last week after
an alternative motion was unanimously passed that allowed the tree to be removed
on the condition they paid a $2,500 bond
before any work was done on the driveway.

They will also need to plant two replacement trees on their
property.

After the motion to remove the tree was passed at the meeting, councillor Douglas Jackson said it was a ‘good outcome’.

‘I think it meets both the owners’ wants, or expectation, but also matches the council’s needs at the same time by ensuring that there is tree cover on the verge
of that property,’ he said.

Peppermint Grove is hoping to implement a policy that would even make it an offence to damage
or remove any mature trees on private property without council approval.

Last month, WA Planning Minister John Carey said he hoped the Shire of Peppermint
Grove would ‘take a common sense approach’ to the issue.

‘This is part of the challenge that we do have with local government.

I’ve always been on the record that we need local governments to take a common sense approach to issues,’ Mr Carey told the West Australian. 

‘And I understand people are passionate about trees.
But ultimately, we do need local governments to assess the situation and find pragmatic outcomes.’

According to the online listing for the four-bedroom,
four-bathroom mansion – which is built on a corner block along the banks of the Swan River –

A huge load of potentially explosive contaminated Russian fertiliser has been dumped in the sea about off the coast of Norfolk, a council leader has revealed.

The undisclosed quantity of ammonium nitrate was part of a 20,000-tonne
load of the fertiliser on board a damaged ship dubbed a ‘floating time bomb’.

The MV Ruby arrived in Great Yarmouth on October 28 after being turned
away from ports in Norway and Lithuania because its load was
considered too dangerous.

Her operators had hoped to offload the cargo to another vessel alongside to allow the
MV Ruby to then be repaired after sustaining damage at sea.

But council chiefs claim the operation hit a snag when some of the fertiliser was found to be contaminated,
potentially making it more risky to handle.

Ship tracker records show the MV Ruby left the town’s outer harbour just after 10am on Saturday
and sailed out just beyond the 12-mile limit for international waters.

She then spent more than 30 hours circling around as her cargo was
apparently dumped into the North Sea before being allowed back into port on Monday.

Ammonium nitrate is highly soluble in seawater and can cause eutrophication, where the accelerated
growth of algae causes oxygen depletion which harms aquatic life.

Ammonia is also harmful to fish as it damages
nervous system, while nitrates in fish’s blood streams make it
harder for them to absorb oxygen.

Graham Plant, the deputy leader of Great Yarmouth
Borough Council, said today: ‘My limited understanding is that some
of the cargo was found to be contaminated and somebody thought it was a good idea to dispose
of it at sea.

‘Personally, I didn’t want the ship here in the first place, and I am annoyed it has come back.

I represent the community of Great Yarmouth, and I believe some explanation is needed.

‘There were assurances given that the cargo was 100 per
cent safe when it arrived, but it really needs to be
110 per cent safe. We were told they had all the expertise to offload it,
and then this happens.’

Mr Plant added in a joint statement with Norfolk County Council leader Kay Mason Billig: ‘We are extremely concerned that the Secretary of State’s representative has agreed
that this ship can return to Great Yarmouth.

‘That is unacceptable. It should never have come in the first
place, due to the potential risk of a major explosion that could have affected residents and businesses across Great
Yarmouth.

‘On behalf of the people of Yarmouth, we urge the Government to halt the return of the MV Ruby.’

The ship was carrying seven times more ammonium nitrate than the 2,750
tonnes of the fertiliser which exploded in the Port of Beirut in Lebanon in 2020, killing 218 people.

The blast – one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history – is said to have happened because the fertiliser
was not properly stored.

But the operators of Great Yarmouth port had insisted last month that the ship had been berthed in the town under ‘the strictest safety conditions’.

A spokesman for Peel Ports, which operates the outer
harbour at Great Yarmouth, refused to confirm or deny if ammonium
nitrate had been dumped at sea from the ship, saying they could not comment on anything that did not happen in the
port.

The firm said in a statement: ‘The MV Ruby left port briefly for operational reasons but
has since returned and the transhipment of cargo to another vessel is ongoing.’

Richard Goffin, the Port Director at the Port of Great Yarmouth, added: ‘We have performed our duty as a port to
help a vessel in distress, and its crew, by providing a safe haven.

‘Everything we have done has been in accordance with guidance and direction received from the Secretary of State’s representatives and the
Health and Safety Executive, as well as discussions with many other public agencies,
including Norfolk County Council.’

The Maltese-registered MV Ruby left the Russian port of Kandalaksha
with its cargo in late August but ran aground and damaged
its propellor, rudder and hull.

The ship, which was reportedly heading to Africa, called at the Norwegian port of Tromso for repairs
in early September but was forced to leave after media speculation over risks posed by her cargo.

Residents of Tromso had become increasingly concerned as the ship was anchored near a university campus, a hospital, and hundreds of homes.

The MV Ruby was also turned away from a repair yard in Lithuania, and
ultimately wound up waiting at anchor in the English Channel.

It finally headed to the outer harbour at Great Yarmouth
after being given permission to dock there in a move welcomed by
the town’s new Reform MP Rupert Lowe.

A second ship is due to take the remaining cargo to its final
destination while the MV Ruby is repaired in a dry dock elsewhere.

Locals in Great Yarmouth have spoken of their fears about the ship after
a 550lb Second World War bomb was detonated in the town in February last year.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes after the unexploded
German bomb was unearthed during building work for a new bridge.

The bomb dramatically blew up three days later during an attempt to disarm
it, creating a giant blast which shook homes and was heard up to ten miles away.

A spokesman for Serenity Ship Management, which manages
MV Ruby, said it had reached an agreement with Peel Ports Group to accept the ship in Great Yarmouth ‘to complete a transhipment
of the vessel’s cargo of ammonium nitrate’.

The firm added: ‘The vessel’s cargo poses no risk to the surrounding area in its present state.’

Sir Roger Gale, the MP for Herne Bay and Sandwich, said
that the cargo was safe following his meeting with Shipping Minister Mike Kane
last month.

Peel Ports had earlier said it was ‘accommodating the vessel in a
suitable berth under the strictest of safety measures’.

It added last month: ‘The Port of Great Yarmouth has the capability to handle hazardous materials and the discharge and transhipment of such materials and cargo is common practice across our port group.

‘Our team is well-versed in implementing rigorous safety protocols
and we strictly adhere to all UK safety regulations and international
maritime standards.’

2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn). 

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore —
the lowest score for a comic book movie at the time of writing. 

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and
also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a
C+. 

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds
an audience score of 31 percent and a critic score of 33 percent. 

The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the domestic box office during the entirety of opening weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter. 

The movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the number
has since drastically dropped. 

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters – and eventually landed a little
over $1 billion in the global box office.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of
31% and a critic score of 32%

budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200 million. 

The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both
critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the
76th Venice International Film Festival. 

Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of
the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score. 

The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month in September, where it
earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.   

However, audiences have since taken to X after the movie released in theaters on Friday – and shared their opinions on the sequel,
which features musical sequences. 

One fan penned, ‘Joaquin Phoenix don’t deserve this. what happened to the
script?’ while another added, ‘is it that bad,’ followed by
a crying face emoji. 

‘Ironically I feel that a musical, if done well, could have been a good choice.

It’d show how much of an unreliable narrator Fleck is,’ one typed. 

‘But with some original songs, that keep everything vague,
not just covers. Also when I heard of the ending I
snorted fr.’ 

A social media user wrote, ‘Stop making sequels as musicals if the original wasn’t a musical.’ 

‘Maybe he [Phillips] only had an hour long movie, and decided to randomly add musical scenes
to fill the runtime,’ one penned.

Venice, a city long associated with masks and masquerades, was the perfect place to unveil Joker five
years ago; and last month, at the venerable film festival there, it was followed by the sequel, Joker:
Folie À Deux.

The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once more in the title
role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose we
must call the love interest, although that would undervalue her wonderful performance.

We’ve known since A Star Is Born in 2018 that she can act,
but she really is terrific in a bad-girl role. They’d have loved her at St Trinian’s.

This film is audaciously different in style from the original,
not as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the
same.

Arthur is now behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be judged sane
enough to stand trial for murder, and in the meantime enjoying his celebrity status with fellow prisoners and even the warders, one
of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Which is more real: the psychopath wearing the mask or the vulnerable fellow behind
it? Either way, identity confusion is the theme of this film, which keeps
being billed as a musical. 

It’s not, really, although music looms large as an expression of Arthur and
Lee’s burgeoning love for one another. And there are a couple of swooning dance routines that make them look
like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in La
La Land (2016).

Moreover, it is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s
1953 classic The Band Wagon that Lee, who claims to have been imprisoned for arson, sets fire to their prison wing.

The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to escape, yet Phillips
and his co-writer Scott Silver skilfully toy with our expectations throughout; each time we anticipate which way the narrative is going to go, it
confounds us by wheeling off in another direction.

the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by the subject of multiple personality
disorder. Is the defendant accused of five murders Arthur, or is it Joker?
His kindly lawyer (Catherine Keener) strives to show it is the former; Lee just as urgently wants him to identify as his demonic
alter ego.

For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights, it is still a gripping film about mental illness; not quite comparable with
all-time greats such as Psycho (1960) and One
Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), but not too far off.

– Joker’s Gotham, of course, is a lightly fictionalised version of New York City.

The real thing is the backdrop to A Different Man, another absorbing
story, splendidly written and directed by Aaron Schimberg, about an urban loner struggling with life.

In the case of the troubled, self-conscious Edward (Sebastian Stan), an aspiring actor,
that’s apparently because he has a disfiguring craniofacial condition. Instructional corporate videos seem
to be about as far as he can get in the acting world.

There are obvious echoes of The Elephant Man (1980), and for that matter of
recent release The Substance, in which Demi Moore’s character, a former movie star ‘disfigured’ by a
few wrinkles, finds a way of transforming into her own younger self.

Here, Edward is told by a doctor that ‘an alternative path has presented itself’.
In other words, medical science has found
a way to reverse his condition, turning him into a perfectly attractive middle-aged man.

But Schimberg’s point, made with great satirical swagger, is
that Edward, despite his radical change in appearance,
is still the same person underneath that he always was.

In his former condition he was befriended by his pretty, charismatic neighbour,
Ingrid (Renate Reinsve), a playwright. Now he is able to
fall into bed with her, and to star in a play she has written about
their relationship, little though she knows of his real identity.

I was even reminded of Tootsie (1982) and Mrs Doubtfire
(1993) as Edward’s new persona fundamentally fails to alter
who he actually is. This is illuminated by the arrival of Oswald,
an Englishman with the same condition Edward once had, but popular,
witty, confident, and gloriously played by Adam Pearson (who really does suffer from a
disfiguring condition called neurofibromatosis).

Pearson is probably best-known for his debut film, Jonathan Glazer’s brilliant Under The Skin (2013).
Which is apt, because this picture, too, is about
what’s under the skin.

Paul Weller’s film debut? That’s entertainment!
The 68th London Film Festival opens next week with the world premiere
of Blitz, director Steve McQueen’s drama set in London as
the Luftwaffe’s bombs rain down night after night.

Saoirse Ronan, for my money one of the most talented actresses of her generation, plays Rita, an East End mum whose son George
(Elliott Heffernan) goes missing. It sounds intriguing even without the casting of The Jam’s
former front man Paul Weller — in his feature film debut — as Rita’s
father.

I’m also very much looking forward to another world premiere, Joy, the story of the three brilliant British medical pioneers whose work on IVF led to
the world’s first ‘test-tube’ baby, Louise Brown, in 1978.

It is directed by Ben Taylor, best-known for his TV work on shows such as Sex Education and Catastrophe,
and stars Bill Nighy, James Norton and Thomasin McKenzie.

I have heard great things about Conclave, the adaptation of Robert Harris’s novel starring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci.
A couple of new documentaries catch the eye, too.
One of them is made by actress Sadie Frost, whose directing
debut was a film about Mary Quant. This time she turns to another
fashion icon of the 1960s, with a feature called Twiggy.

And Elton John: Never Too Late promises a ‘uniquely intimate’
look at the star’s life and career. It’s been made by his long-time partner David Furnish, so… we’ll see.

What do pop star Lily Allen, Olympic gold medal-winning
diver Jack Laugher, tennis player Nick Kyrgios and 25-year-old
Bonnie Blue from Nottingham, who has filmed herself having
sex with hundreds of 18-year-old students (and sometimes their dads, too),
all have in common?

Yes, you guessed it. They are all ‘creatives’ on OnlyFans, the adults-only online content provider founded in 2016 by a young Essex
businessman called Tim Stokely, which is now one of the most visited (and lucrative) websites in the world.

Just last month, Lily Allen caused a stir by
revealing that she makes more money charging $10 (£8)
– the site works in dollars – for pictures of her feet on her OnlyFans account
labelled ‘La Dolca Feeta’ than she does from her 7.5million monthly listeners on Spotify.

But Lily’s content is tame in comparison to much of the content on the site, the sort company execs refer
to as ‘spicy’. Everything from cheeky shots of bottoms peeking out of
bubble baths, blondes stirring vats of steaming pasta in G-strings, hot men waxing
cars in their pants, right through the sex spectrum to twosomes, threesomes, sixsomes and
hardcore pornographic videos.

But also because, thanks to the allure of OnlyFans and the astonishing sums that a teeny number of
the platform’s 4.1million creatives are raking in, more and more young women (and
it is mostly young women) who would never have considered it
before are suddenly happy to join in and sell photos of, well, pretty much
anything, to pay rent, settle credit card bills or splash out on nice holidays.
Basically, a flashier life all round.

‘We feel empowered. We have agency. It’s completely up to me if I take
my top off or not,’ says one 21-year-old girl, who joined a year ago
and makes enough in a week to cover a year’s student rent at Sheffield University and prefers not
to give her name.

‘And I am happy to do it because for once I make the
rules, in the safety of my home and they’re paying me to do it.
It’s a mug’s game, but I am not the mug.’

For the benefit of those readers who are not among the site’s 305million users,
OnlyFans offers creators a platform where they can charge their fans a subscription fee ranging from
$4.99 to $49.99 a month to look at their content, contact them (or more often access their ‘chatter’ – more of which later) and access
often more explicit, personalised, ‘à la carte’ content through ‘tips’.

In 2023, the site generated a record $6.6billion (£5.2billion),
of which the company takes a straight 20 per cent – much less than YouTube – and the rest
goes to the ‘performers’.

It is unlike Instagram or other social media sites in that nothing is suggested –
instead, you have to search for, and then subscribe to, individual
accounts to see much more than profile pictures.

Which is a good thing, because while some of the content is anodyne, much is
highly sexual and many people on the site can bob freely from one to another.
Perhaps a cookery hack one day, modelling new boots the next, then graduate
to a few cheeky cleavage and bikini shots and more, as the money becomes more tempting.

Every week, it seems, we hear of someone who has made millions.

Last month it was announced that American influencer Corinna Kopf had
retired from the site, aged 28, after making $67million (£53million).
In her best month, she reportedly earned more than $2million (£1.6million).

Rapper Cardi B is said to earn more than $9million (£7.1million) a month from
the site.

Meanwhile, Darcie Rattles was an out-of-work bricklayer with £6,
000 in credit card bills and debts when she joined OnlyFans
in 2022.

‘I was thinking: how the hell am I going to get to next week?
How am I going to pay my credit cards?’ she says in an online interview.
‘I’m young, I’ve got a good body and I’ve got a
lot of followers. It is what any girl would turn to. It had
been in the back of mind for two years, but then I did it.’

Within two days of launching, she had earned enough to pay off
her debts. Today, Darcie, who comes across as likeable, down-to-earth and
has no qualms about what she shares, claims to earn more than £250,000 a year.

But even Darcie seems like the girl next door compared to Lily Phillips, a British model who earned £2,000
in her first 24 hours on the site and recently went viral for sleeping with 101 men over
a 14-hour period. She has since announced she is planning to set a record of having sex
with 1,000 men in 24 hours.

And Bonnie Blue, a beautiful blonde with a golden tan and astonishingly white teeth, who has worked her way round Derby,
Nottingham, Cancun and Australia, sleeping with university students.

On one night during Nottingham Trent freshers’ week
– after publicising her stunt by wearing a sandwich board
that read: ‘Bonk me for free and let me film it’ – she had boys queuing up from 6pm until five in the morning.

‘I got through them all,’ she said proudly in one interview in which she reminds
us that, thanks to OnlyFans, she has already banked
more than £3 million – for which she was
applauded by her followers for her entrepreneurship.

But all that is chicken feed when you consider the £370 million dividend that company owner paid himself last year.

And these days that’s Leonid Radvinsky, who bought a majority stake from Tim Stokely in 2018, two years after he started the business with the help of a loan from his father.

It was the Covid-era lockdowns that thrust OnlyFans into the stratosphere.

Everyone shut up at home, nothing to do. In 2020, it generated revenues
of $2.23billion (£1.8billion). By 2021, it was up to $4.8billion (£3.8billion).
There was a brief hiatus in October of that year when they tried
banning sexually explicit content but that lasted about ten minutes
before they switched back.

There have been plenty of scandals along the way. A BBC investigation back in 2021
revealed that children were not just accessing the material online by foxing the age verification process but
were also selling explicit videos on the
website. Leah, 17, had used a fake driving licence to set up an OnlyFans account where she made £5,000 uploading revealing videos of herself.

There have also been claims of OnlyFans creators using
public gyms and spaces to make adult content.

Recently there has been more concerns that the company is not doing enough
to protect minors.

OnlyFans, however, prefers to portray itself as a force for good, with supporters arguing that it empowers people by allowing them to sell content –
over which they have full control – directly to consumers.
And many of the Gen Z generation seem to agree. ‘It’s fine.

It’s empowering. It’s taking control,’ they cry,
pointing out that the site has loads of moderators and a tight
security system to ensure that all users are over 18.

And they say, anyway, that OnlyFans isn’t just about sex.

Of course, they’re right. It has long been awash with pneumatic reality
TV stars and the likes of Lottie Moss, Kerry Katona and Katie
Price, who are happy to tease their followers with a few cheeky peeks in skimpy bikinis.

I spend an afternoon browsing the site and, while it is not all ‘spicy’ content as the company executives like to call it,
everything is dripping with sauce and promise.

The big lips, the push-up bras, even the way a pretty Spanish chef is
holding her paella pan. Company executives have been pushing hard to make the platform more mainstream – offering contracts and
financial incentives to encourage musicians, sports stars, cooks, anyone really, to come
on and share a bit of exclusive – or niche – content.

Really, anything that people will pay to look at – glimpses backstage at concerts.

During the 2024 Olympic Games, a raft of athletes jumped on the OnlyFans bandwagon to
share pictures of their beautifully toned bodies.

Along with Jack Laugher, Team NZ rower Robbie Manson uses the site to share ‘exclusive content that tastefully explores the boundaries, including artistic portrayals of nudity’ for $14.99 a

Lottie Moss  has also taken to the adults-only online content
provider that was founded in 2016 and is used by 4.1 million creatives

Elise Christie turned to the site when she found herself in financial difficulties.

All of which seems to be working well for them, but it can be rather murkier for others.

Not least because, in less than a decade, OnlyFans has spawned an entire
support industry of ‘sugar daddies’ who support performers financially
and ‘chatters’ who work for them. ‘Sugar daddies’ tend to be older male businessmen who ‘invest’ in promising
creatives. In what are referred to rather murkily as ‘mutually beneficial deals’, they invest in branding
and marketing and videography to boost traffic.

Chatters are different. For the real stars, the
traffic is so high and the interaction with followers so demanding
that if they had to do it all themselves, there’s
no way they would ever have time to put their pyjamas back on.

So ‘chatters’ – a sort of online 21st-century Cyrano de Bergerac
– do that for them. Keeping them engaged, online, needy
and most of all, spending, spending, spending for more and more
content.
