Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with Alan Joyce was
a strictly professional one between a Prime Minister and a
corporate titan, as he battles claims the Qantas boss was his ‘personal travel agent’ for free flights and upgrades.
However that characterization of the relationship was at odds with that made
by Mr Joyce, who said he was ‘good mates’
with Mr Albanese and had been ‘for years’.
In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime Minister had Mr Joyce arrange free tickets and upgrades, Mr Albanese distanced
himself from the Qantas chief.
When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr Albanese implied it
was purely in a professional capacity, having been Transport
Minister and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming Prime Minister.
‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline … I had the same relationship with him that I
have with John Borghetti as the CEO of Virgin,’ Mr Albanese said.
That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce apparently greatly
enjoying each other’s company.
Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the red carpet
at the Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last year.
In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet
with one arm around the prime minister and the other around Mr Albanese’s partner, Jodie Haydon.
Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese
attended Qantas’s unveiling of it’s special ‘Yes 23′ emblazoned airplanes for the Voice referendum.
Former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce jovially walked the red carpet with one arm around the prime minister and the other around
his partner, Jodie Haydon for a special anniversary event last year
Mr Joyce was seen touching Mr Albanese’s arm, with the PM bursting into
laughter.
Even when Scott Morrison was PM, Mr Joyce enjoyed an apparently close relationship with Mr
Albanese as the pair stood close together at the launch of
the Qantas’ landmark Perth to London flight in March, 2018.
During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he had been ‘friends for years’ with Mr Albanese.
Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a membership to
the prestigious and exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce refused to confirm or deny but talked up his relationship with the Prime Minister.
‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’ Mr Joyce said.
However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied the Prime Minister on the controversial decision to
lock competitor Qatar Airways out of domestic routes.
It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge,
by former Australian Financial Review columnist
Joe Aston that Ms Haydon is also a Chairman’s Lounge member.

Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades from
economy from Qantas and he would liaise personally with the former
airline boss for them.
Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs to ask
for special upgrades for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese
received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to
Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu, with some being for holidays.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for work purposes and all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing Mr Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of Mr
Joyce.
Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had directly contacted Mr Joyce to request upgrades
while holding a regulatory position in the transport
sector.
‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up the phone to one of the most important stakeholders in the
portfolio asking for a free upgrade, then again, I think the Prime Minister would be
able to answer those questions more effectively than anyone else because I’m not aware of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.
It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of the
Qantas Chairman’s Lounge
The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce for upgrades on Tuesday at press conference in the NSW city of Newcastle.
‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through calls – we discussed the first flight from Australia
to Dubai on the A380,’ he said.
‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of the rules.’
Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah
Ferguson about how confident he was that Mr Albanese had made calls
personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.
‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.
Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying to block UAE
airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to think that the Prime Minister’s office had nothing to do with the
decision.
Mr Albanese’s son Nathan, 24, has reportedly also been granted access to
the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge (pictured, Mr Albanese and son Nathan in May, 2022)
‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the Albanese government that would not go through the Prime Minister’s office,
‘ Aston replied.
He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market Qatar
had seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister Catherine King
speaking warmly about the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to stop it dead in tracks.
Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block
Qatar was due to Qantas lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.
Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade received from Qantas the Australian Financial Review reported on Tuesday that he failed to do
for his former wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled together.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has questioned the alleged personal requests Mr
Albanese made to Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary
jobs

Sky New host Sharri Markson on Monday night labeled Mr Joyce as ‘basically Albanese’s
personal travel agent.’
‘This is all a question of integrity. Most Australians struggle to afford even an economy airfare.
They’d never be able to afford the luxury of business class.
It’s out of our reach,’ she said.
‘Can Albanese truly be impartial when it comes to making decisions about Qantas when he’s been getting tens of thousands of dollars worth of free upgrades to business class?
The revelations puts the decision he made as transport minister
and prime minister under a cloud.
‘Aside from the integrity issues, this revelation is also politically lethal.
Albanese took care to curate a self-image of a housing commission boy who
made it. But now the perception is cementing of a long-term
pollie enjoying the perks of public office.’
Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s apparent close relationship with Mr Joyce is
that the Labor leader in a trade unionist advocate while Qantas attempted to break the power of the Transport Workers Union by sacking 1700 staff during Covid.
The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal Court in a case brought by the union with
Qantas facing possible hundreds of thousands in compensation payouts.
The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio star Neil Mitchell.
‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote on X.
‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having Alan Joyce as a bestie?
Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

Former first lady Melania Trump said she was completely comfortable with posing nude during her modeling days.
In her memoir Melania, which was released Tuesday, she
recounts how her nude photos were put on the cover of The New York Post during the closing weeks of
the 2016 presidential election.
The tabloid used the ‘disgusting heaadline,’ as Melania described
it, ‘Menage à Trump.’
‘My upbringing in Europe had fostered a different perspective on nudity, a more open and accepting attitude,’ she wrote.
‘We were accustomed to beaches where nudity was commonplace,
a natural and uncontroversial aspect of life.’
She noted how ‘attitudes toward the female body
in the United States were starkly different.’

The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country’s movers and shakers where secret deals
were done in private luxury first exploded into the public eye back in 2007.
Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars wining and
dining the nation’s political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP
lounges was relatively unknown.
It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the CEO of Qantas had even started, when he was boss of the
comparatively lowly budget airline, Jetstar.
And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls leading up to an election in next year, the prospects back in 2007 were rosy
for Labor.
The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide that would
see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and John Howard lose his own seat.
The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s Lounge then wasn’t about a prime
minister’s privileges, although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were certainly both members during their terms as PM.
But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time
Chairman’s Lounge member – revealed a politically charged remark made
within the club’s hallowed walls, the cat was out
of the bag.
The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned
senator Peter Garrett that Labor would change the policies
it campaigned on if it won government – did not deter his party from romping in on election day.
In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife
Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring
down the prime minister.
The exclusive Qantas Chairman’s Lounge (above) has been a well-kept secret for years, but
it exploded into the public conscience in 2007 as the result of
a political furore
Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002
during a row before the 2007 election won by Kevin Rudd
which let the cat out of the bag about the VIP club
The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s remark, Steve Price had to explain what
the private enclave actually was.
In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate frequent flyers lounge away
from the crowded normal Qantas Club.
‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved
by the Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson.
‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’
In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV
entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was also a member of
lounge.
Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness to the remark Price said Garrett
had made.
Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors and performers, and well-known writers and sports people are said to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership
of around 6000.
Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was
a confidential conversation in a private place,
but which exposed him to criticism over his own membership for allegedly

business leaders some privacy from the hoi polloi?’

‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and
confidentiality,’ he said, accusing Price of breaking
‘a confidence’.
The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry into the club’s hushed
confines.
Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership was ‘so exclusive that you have to
be personally invited by the airline’s chieftain’, Nine newspapers reported in 2008.
‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that the mega rich
and powerful avoid having to mingle with the riffraff who

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the lounge ‘which most
of their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary interests that
year included Liberal MPs of the day, Philip Ruddock,
Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.
Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a
bottle of Grange hermitage as a gift from Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher
Pyne.
Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson told Nine: ‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is by invitation only
and it is reviewed periodically.’
Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the
country has accepted free membership of the controversial, invitation-only lounge
with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.
Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the ‘very, very high-end perk’ gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.
They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman’s Lounge
by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which has stirred up the controversy.
A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers
– in both Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost
93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.
Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest statements.
At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of
his upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate.
What’s appropriate is transparency.’
Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers.

once inside, the designer lounges offer free à la carte fine dining, table service and
a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants
On the Coalition side of parliament, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, deputy leader David Littleproud and former deputy Barnaby Joyce are also
among the swathes of politicians who have disclosed they have taken up free membership to the contentious club.
Bill Shorten is a member, Tanya Plibersek is still
a member and so is Teal MP, Zali Steggall.
Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and
Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo
and some of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating the airline.
Senior public servants in the club included Department of
Prime Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries Nadine Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb,
Rachel Bacon and ambassador to Beijing, Scott Dewar.
Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business class flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts, frequent flyer points, and tickets to sporting and entertainment events.
Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership to the Chairman’s Lounge is still veiled in secrecy.

Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent VIP clubs – in Sydney,
Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth airports – are
suitably discreet.
Once inside, however, the designer lounges are noticeably luxurious,
with free à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent
selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.
Virgin Airlines has its own version of the VIP enclave, the ‘Beyond’ lounge.
Only a handful of federal politicians have relinquished their membership to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge in the wake of the furore.
The select few to take a principled stand on the issue include South Australian senator Barbara Pocock and former Wallabies star turned ACT senator David Pocock, along
with MPs Stephen Bates, Queensland Green Elizabeth Watson-Brown, and
Monique Ryan, a Teal from Victoria.
Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting the Independent Commission Against Corruption and
a director of the Centre for Public Integrity, has implored all politicians and policymakers to
follow suit.
‘There are certain positions in life where you cannot take Chairman’s Club membership,’ he said.
‘You’re taking public money for the job and you are supposed to represent the public.

a plane?’

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their reason for
entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major
parties look set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend
in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election –
actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus
increasing the transparency of who makes political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity
while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that
disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you only find
out the details of who has given what to whom many months later,
well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will
result in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy
and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’
Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot – saying
if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort, not
reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said: ‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed
to $16,000 under the current rules, will
need to disclose having done so. And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the
proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’,
‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal
just might secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence of
the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the
major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor
and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as

Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal
funder Simon Holmes à Court
The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their
irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader
Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)
The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from
the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular
calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a
mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political
donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by
the way. It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch
the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for
them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I
imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging
the Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to
get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench
should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things
up’.

Former first lady Melania Trump said she was completely comfortable with posing nude during her modeling days.
In her memoir Melania, which was released Tuesday, she recounts
how her nude photos were put on the cover of The New York Post during the closing weeks of the 2016 presidential election.
The tabloid used the ‘disgusting heaadline,’ as Melania described it, ‘Menage à Trump.’
‘My upbringing in Europe had fostered a different perspective on nudity,
a more open and accepting attitude,’ she wrote.
‘We were accustomed to beaches where nudity was commonplace, a natural and
uncontroversial aspect of life.’
She noted how ‘attitudes toward the female body in the United States were starkly different.’

shot for the French magazine Max in 1996 used against her husband politically

Max.
‘The photos had never been circulated in the United States,’ she recalled.
‘The magazine that had originally published them had ceased to exist
long before these images were unearthed, and now they were being shared for the sole purpose of damaging
Donald’s campaign.’
She wrote that the photos ‘were not a source of shame for me.’
‘The female form was once revered and honored in Western culture.
Historically, artists produced magnificent paintings and sculptures that exalted the beauty of the feminine figure.
Nudity was a medium through which humanity was elevated and celebrated,
‘ Melania sid.
‘This sentiment resonated deeply with me when I posed
for Vogue during my pregnancy,’ she wrote.
Throughout the book she mentions her working relationship with Vogue and its longtime top editor
Anna Wintour.
These days Wintour is actively supporting former President Donald Trump’s Democratic rival,
Vice President Kamala Harris.

about posing nude but was angered that her nude modeling photos were
used to try to hurt her husband’s first presidential
campaign
‘I believed then, as I do now, that women should take pride in their bodies,
not feel shame,’ Melania continued.
‘During my modeling days, posing nude was commonplace and hardly scandalous,’ she said.
‘To me, those images were artistic and tasteful, fitting for a publication like Max,
which showcased many renowned super-models.’
But there was another problem with the photographer selling the photos
of Melania to the newspaper – he originally said the photoshoot happened a
year before.
‘This misinformation led to unfounded allegations that I had illegally worked in the
United States, a claim propagated by the New York
Post,’ she wrote.
‘Although the photographer later admitted the error,
the damage was done – sensationalized lies about me spread
worldwide, driven by a shameful pursuit of scandal and
profit,’ the former first lady added.

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday against the dollar,
but is headed for its tenth straight weekly loss amid
concerns that new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump will heighten strains
on the struggling Chinese economy.
Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected to drive up U.S.
inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling too
much. «We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,» Lynn Song,
Greater China chief economist at ING, said in a note.
However, «we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.» The yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved from the previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low
of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest weekly losing streak since 2018.
The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight
and «the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building» in the yuan,
aided by ongoing attempts by China’s central bank to restrain its
decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC Capital
Markets.
Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic recovery,
with manufacturing activities improving, but property sales
in many Chinese cities remaining weak. China’s «economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,» said John Browning,
managing director of BANDS Financial.
He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week’s Central
Economic Work Conference, as «Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.» Top
policymakers will gather at the conference to agree on major economic goals for next year.
But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched indicators globally for clues of Beijing’s near-term policy
intentions, likely will not be officially announced until an annual
parliament meeting in March. During Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened
about 5% against the dollar after the initial round
of U.S.
tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5%
a year later when trade tensions escalated. Growth worries and expectations of
further monetary easing by Beijing pushed China’s 10-year treasury yields
below 2% to record lows this week, worsening the yield disadvantage against the U.S., and exerting downward pressure on the yuan. ING’s Song expects
the onshore yuan to move within a band between 7.00-7.40 per dollar, but

Namibians returned to vote on Friday in 36 polling stations reopened two days after a chaotic election, set to test the ruling party’s 34-year grip on power, was marred by technical

southern African nation where Wednesday’s election was marked by long delays
and labelled a «sham» by the opposition.
Some people waited 12 hours in line to vote in presidential and legislative polls, billed as the toughest yet
for the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party, in power since Namibia’s 1990 independence
from South africa.
Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems, including issues with tablets used to register voters and shortages of ballot papers.
In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had run out of batteries
and mobile voting teams had left areas with voters
still in the queues, it said.
Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral commission extended the
vote for a second time, giving Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.
In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked
to reopen, about 60 people showed up on Friday, including
Kluivert Muuondjo who arrived at 4:30 am.
The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:
00 pm on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as he had exams the next day.

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris
International Inc is working on options to
exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the
country following its invasion of Ukraine.
The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia
in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of several cigarette products and canceled all product launches for the year
in Russia.
It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA sticks, heated tobacco units intended
for use with its IQOS ILUMA devices, as well as related investment of $150 million.
Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended its
planned investments and decided to scale down manufacturing operations in the country.
Rival Imperial Brands too has started talks to transfer its Russian business to a local
third party, joining BAT in exiting the sanction-hit country.

US pop star Lady Gaga has taken on a track known best
to Aussies as the opening theme to the iconic comedy series Kath & Kim.
The song, originally written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the 1964 stage
musical The Roar Of The Greasepaint – The Smell Of The Crowd,
is performed by Gaga for her film Joker: Folie à Deux.
To most Australians, it is the bold and brassy version sung
by Gina Riley, who also plays Kimberly Diane ‘Kim’
Craig (née Day) in the legendary comedy.
Before being immortalised in to the fabric of Australian pop culture, thanks to Gina’s rendition, the song had been covered by the likes
of Shirley Bassey in 1968 and Sammy Davis Jr in 1965.
And now, the Born This Way hitmaker has taken a stab at the track –
with the results markedly different to the brassy feel of the Kath & Kim version.
Gaga’s take, which also features on her new album Harlequin, is
a much more stripped back that builds to a crescendo thanks to
rocking guitars.
Speaking to Today Extra about the track, Kath & Kim star Peter Rowsthorn joked that he was ‘constantly’ hounded by the US pop star regarding the track.
‘She’s constantly calling me, so I know she’s a big fan,’ Pete, who play’s
Kim’s on-again-off-again husband Brett in the series, said.

its heated tobacco device, IQOS, in the U.S. to the fourth quarter on Tuesday and lowered its annual forecast for the heated tobacco
business.
The pilot was earlier scheduled to run in Austin, Texas, in the second quarter,
for which the company reported results on the day.
The company declined to comment on why the launch had
been delayed.
Philip Morris has invested billions to promote and expand its portfolio of alternatives to traditional combustible
cigarettes amid stricter regulations and falling smoking rates in some markets.
The launch of its flagship heated tobacco device in the United
States is also facing resistance from health campaigners,
who have written to regulators in the country accusing the company of misrepresenting past regulatory
decisions, Reuters reported last week.
The company also awaits market authorization from the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration for its IQOS ILUMA device, which it expects by the
second half of 2025.
A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has already hit shipments this year, with
Philip Morris saying the impact from the ban was «slightly greater» than previously assumed.
This led the company to temper its expectations for volume growth in the heated tobacco category
to around 13% for the full year, down from between 14% and 16% expected earlier.
However, Philip Morris topped quarterly expectations and raised its annual sales and
