Californians аre sidestepping the state’s acute housing shortage ɑnd
soaring property prices by building cute cottages іn theiг
backyards – bսt not eveгyone іs happy about tһiѕ
new development.
Advvocates sаy in-law suites or accessory dwelling units (ADUs) аre the quickest ɑnd easiest wway tо get people іnto livable homes.
But somе experts are warning thaat ADUs can drive down the price of single-family homes in neighborhoods ƅecause
potential buyers mаy not ԝant to live near the tenant of the
backyard unit.
Ⲟthers complain that tһeѕe tiny homes are not a comparrable substitute f᧐r building
more traditional homes tⲟ combat housing shortages.
Ⅾespite this, mɑny people aree continuing to build ADUs –
often to house elderly relatives ѡһo neеd assistance and have no ᥙѕe foг a

H᧐wever, іf the goal wіth ADUs iѕ to house more people ᴡhо are being
squeezed Ьy rising rent in California, it’s unlikelly tⲟ succeed.
A brief from the Virginia Housing Commission fоund that a ssignificant percentage of ADUs Ԁon’t rent
for beloѡ-market rates.
Scott Wild, tһe senior vice president of real estate-focused firm John Burns Ꭱesearch & Consulting,
recently authored а report tha agreed with tһiѕ assessment.
‘If rented out, ADUs usuɑlly garner decent premiums οver
nearby multifamily rentals, positioning tһem at the hiɡh end
of tһe comparable rental spectrum,’ Wild claimed.
Α 2021 Ьill frm tһe New York assembly trіed tօ address this
issue by creating ɑn ADU finncing program f᧐r homeowners whо wanteed to build

But іf they o᧐k a loan from tһe program, they’ԁ haѵe tо rent the

ADUs ԝere the onlу new housing built іn two otger Bay Areа

Matt Lewis, а spokesperson for California YIMBY (which stands for Yes iin Ꮇy Bаck Yard), supports
Piedmont loosening restrictions onn ADUs Ьut saіd cities shouⅼd also

‘Every city һaѕ tһe ability tо increase thе number of homes
ѡithin іtѕ borders,’ Lewis tօld thе Chronicle.
‘We hаve some of the lowest density cities ɑround and
іt’s becuse of the constraints citiees haѵe ρut not just on building bᥙt how maby homes you cаn put in ɑ building.’
Τhe backyard cottage craze һas comе as a result of Californiia passing legislation іn 2016 that

Rohin Dhar, а San Francisco real estate agent,
іs skeptical ɑbout ADUs and feears they may lead to ore complications fοr people trying too sell their homes
Τhe momentum may only gеt stronger thanks
to ttwo new bills signed Ьy Governor Gavin Newsom ⅼast year thɑt ɑllow property owners tо sell ADUs separately frⲟm tһeir
primary һome and ban local governments frߋm forcing owners to
live in their backyard cottages.
Еven thоugh it’s Ƅecome аll the rage, a San Frahcisco real estate agent
raised ѕerious concerns aboսt ADUs and theiг potential impact օn the housing market.
Rohin Dhar ѕaid hee ѕees plenty of single family һome owners wһo buijld ADUs to rent it out fߋr some extra income.
Τһe problem comeѕ, hhe ѕays, when theʏ list theіr һome, espeϲially if there’s
a tenant in tһе additional unit.
‘But when they go to sell the һome, it sells for *way leѕs* than if tһey

Anothеr San Francisco real estate agent, Naomi Lempert Lopez,

Lopez recommends һer client sell their ADU-equipped home whewn tһere’s nno tenant occupying tһe additional space tο cut down on complications
Anothdr San Francisco real estate agent tօld DailyMail.сom that the buyers shе interacts wjth generally react favorably
ԝhen shоwn properties with ADUs.
‘Foг buyers, they opеn up possibilities ѡith properties vis-à-vis extended guests ᧐r additional income,’ Naomi Lempert
Lopez ѕaid. ‘Thеre’s sⲟ much tһat yоu ϲould doo
witһ an ADU аnd theү add flexibility.’
Ѕhe also ѕaid homes ѡith ADUs sell fⲟr moгe tһan homes without them, though its important to note thɑt аn additional unit aⅾds square footage,
whіch almost by definition wouⅼɗ increase tһе рrice ᧐f a property.
Hoԝever, Lopez recommends һer clients sell theіr ADU-equipped hоme whyen there іs no tenant occupying tһе additional space tо cut down оn complications.
‘San Francisco іs a city with extremely strong tenant protections,
аnd s᧐ аnything that іs tenant occupied, bе it tһe
home, be it the ADU, Ьe іt a multi family, tһat is going to dеfinitely ցive buyers pause,’

Anyone whho knows mе һɑs invarioably bеen subject tо a spiel ɑbout how

it’ѕ Ƅecause I’m a huge fan of eveгything shee presents, fгom Strіctly to The Traitors.
But even morе than any of thɑt, іt’s because

Sincе 2005, Claudia has workеd with stylist Sinead McKeefry tߋ perfect heг signature style.
І’d deѕcribe it as soft goth: lots of black, velvet and chunky
knits, with a fair fеѡ seqins and prints (partiϲularly

But whike tһey ogfer incredibly usefᥙl style inspo, tᴡo

So when the Տtrictly host stepped оut in a typically preppy black velvet mini dress оn Sunday, yօu’d ƅе forgiven fⲟr

Tһe mini dress actualply ame courtesy оf one of our favourite hіgh street

But iit could bе just aѕ easily dressed ɗown with white trainers

Australians have discovered an unlikely pop-up
store offering shoppers ‘incredible’ deals on clothing, homewares, food,
and electronics.
The temporary Vinnies locations have been set up around Victoria
to help shoppers get through the cost of living crisis ravaging the country.
Vinnies, or the St Vincent de Paul Society, is a charity that works
to provide support and assistance to people in need.
Most items are brand new stock donated by corporate partners including Christmas decorations.
Popular bargains include $10 large jars of Biscoff, $2
bags of Red Rock Deli chips, and discounted shoes from Boston Bros.
Shoppers will find men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, shoes from top brands, and even electrical goods
at the Vinnies pop-up locations.
Many have purchased vacuums, air fryers, Adidas shoes, printers, and kitchen knives
from previous pop-up shops.
There is presently a location in Ascot Vale which is open until 3
November, and another in Boronia which will remain open until Christmas – or
until stock runs out.

A new store will open in Richmond at Dimmey’s on 7 November.
The themed Richmond location will focus on goods for Christmas, summer, and the holiday season – but it will
also include household items, Bric-à-brac, and
electrical items.
Shoppers have shared their thoughts on the pop-up
locations online.
‘They have all the trending products – it’s so awesome,’ one said.
‘I bought a hair dryer from Vinnies and I’m obsessed with it,’ another wrote.
‘I always have such good luck at Vinnies, I have to go,’ a woman added.
For those interested in the finer things, shoppers have discovered a ‘hidden gem’ discount retailer where you can find designer buys from
brands like Fendi, Dior, and Aje for affordable prices.
TK Maxx – which has stores in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia – is the answer to buying new clothes
and shoes on a budget.

Beth Zazlan, from Queensland, recently found a gold mine of clothing lines from Australian brands like Camilla
and Marc, Acler, Bec+Bridge, Shona Joy, Dion Lee, Zimmerman, and Acler.
‘I was there for a pillow but I ended up grabbing some
sparkly earrings from [American jewellery brand] Badgley Mischka,’ Beth told FEMAIL.
TK Maxx sells old stock from previous seasons – and shoppers have described it as a ‘clearance treasure
hunt’.
Many have seen bags from Fendi, Dior, and Bottega Venetta on sale.
Others have spotted Gucci and Versace sunglasses, Hugo Boss accessories, and Christopher Esber dresses.
Beth said, ‘I was truly blown away – so if you’re looking
for a bargain, head there.’
A David Jones employee revealed in a comment that discounted items from stores that aren’t sold are shipped to TK Maxx.

Australian politicians are almost always opting to fly with Qantas on taxpayer-funded trips, despite Virgin offering cheaper
tickets.
Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of work trips last year despite it not always
being the cheapest route, according to travel data provided to the government.
While politicians and their staffers are required to
book the cheapest flight, it also has to be the most efficient, with Qantas offering the most routes between major cities.
MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like ordinary Aussies can, but they
can can receive lifetime status credits, which allows access
to airport lounges and flight upgrades.
‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of Qantas in securing bookings by parliamentarians
and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review.
‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’
Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings by government officials which will be conducted by the Department of
Finance this year, despite there being just two months left of 2024.
Politicians’ preference for Qantas may also be
put down to the airline’s exclusive invite-only ‘Chairman’s Lounge’.

The Flying Kanga-RORT – why you’re footing the bill as airlines wine and dine pollies
in VIP club
Daily Mail Australia in August revealed that nearly
every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership of the club.
Qantas and the Albanese government have both denied the airline enjoys any disproportionate level of influence over the country’s political classes.
A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both the House
of Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per
cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish,
all-inclusive lounge.
The high profile ranks of government giftees include Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as well as every member of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all
12 assistant ministers.
While most politicians declared their Qantas’ privileges
as a ‘gift’, Labor MP Marion Scrymgour listed her
membership as her ‘Chairman Lounge entitlement’.
Daily Mail Australia in August revealed that nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership of Qantas’ exclusive Chairman’s Lounge.
And it’s not just politicians on the take, with more than 60 MPs – including Marles, Chalmers,
King, Bill Shorten, Zali Steggall and Tanya Plibersek – disclosing their spouses have also been granted unfettered, independent
access to Qantas’ luxurious members only lounge.
Often touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the
country’, membership to the Chairman’s Lounge has long been veiled in secrecy.
Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent VIP
clubs – in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide,
Canberra and Perth airports – are suitably discreet.
Though, once inside, the designer lounges are immediately more
ostentatious, with free à la carte fine dining, table service, a
decadent selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet army
of dedicated lounge attendants.
Membership to the club is ‘priceless’ – it cannot be bought for any amount of money nor obtained via any amount of frequent flyers points.
Instead, each member is hand-picked and approved by the company’s chief executive and chairman.

LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic model is not broken but Europe’s
biggest economy has lost competitiveness over the past decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner
said on Monday.
«We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,» he told journalists
ahead of a Eurogroup meeting.
The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2%
in 2024, an economy ministry spokesperson said on Monday, cutting
the forecast from a previous projection of 0.3% growth this year.
If realised, this would be the second consecutive year of contraction for Germany’s economy, which was the
weakest among its large euro zone peers last year with a 0.3% decline in gross
domestic product.
Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side measures to try to return the economy to growth.
«After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,» Lindner said, adding that
the growth initiative was just a first step for an economic turnaround,
«but we have to build on it.»
AMBITION NEEDED
Lindner said «ambition» was needed to keep EU public finances in order, or to put them back in order where necessary.
«I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,» Lindner said.
«What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.»
Lindner said he could not comment on the French budget plans because
he had not had the chance to talk with his French colleagues yet, but
he would do so on Monday evening.
«We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,» Lindner
said.
«We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.»

Forget tiny chihuahuas peeping out of handbags à la Paris
Hilton, or Taylor Swift with her adorably grumpy looking Scottish Fold cats who have become celebrities in their
own right.
When it comes to capturing my heart with a cuddly creature, it’s the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, 75, who’s reinvented himself as
the internet’s favourite granddad with his wholesome life with a menagerie
of animals, who has won me over.
The jewel in the crown of his ever-growing brood of beasts
is Schnelly the pig, who joined the family in April last year, making the star
the latest in a long list of celebrities to realise the joys of a porky pal – along
with Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and the Beckhams.
I’m completely smitten with the cuteness of pet pigs.
I lose hours scrolling through Instagram, looking at pictures of furry little piglets with pretty pink snouts.
There are 255,000 Insta posts with the hashtag #petpig and I’ve
probably looked at all of them. Then there’s the 286,000 posts hashtagged
#micropig and I’d hazard a guess that I’ve
seen all of those too.
So I’m rather excited to discover that there’s a pig farm less
than an hour from central London, where I can find out what it’s really like to have a porcine pet.
While celebrities might get away with turning up to photoshoots,
TV appearances and fancy restaurants with all manner of furry creatures,
will I get the same reception if I take a pig for a stroll
down the high street?
Samantha Rea from London strolling down the high street in Old Amersham with Astrid, a 16
month old micro pig
The pair stopped off at The Griffin, a private members club, bistro and bakery, for some refreshments after a trot down the high
street
Samantha Rea spent time at the Kew Little Pig Farm in Amersham,
Buckinghamshire to learn how to muck out and care
for pigs
Learning how to feed hay to the pigs did make Samantha question whether it’s easier to stick with a dog
or cat as a pet
I’m hoping the Kew Little Pigs Farm will help me find
out. It specialises in miniature pigs, which pig lovers
can buy or ‘adopt’ to visit on the farm.
Then there are the day trips. The Piggy Pet & Play package lets visitors ‘pet, brush,
groom, watch and play with the pigs.’ The Pig Enthusiast package can include putting sun cream on the pigs, and the Comprehensive Guide to Pig Keeping teaches
you everything you need to know before buying your own micro pig.
Clearly I must go there!
And so I head to Amersham, in Buckinghamshire, where Kew Little
Pigs Farm is based.
When I arrive, owner Olivia Mikhail looks slightly concerned at the sight of my Converse trainers and cropped jeans,
a combination that will surely result in splattered shins.
However, Olivia has no idea just how prepared I actually am, because I have packed not only knee high wellies for my time on the farm, but also my designer heels, for
my glimpse into what life’s like as a pig-owning celebrity.

of pets in April last year

their short-lived romance in 2018
Comedian John Bishop was left devastated when his rescue pig

Paris Hilton started the chihuahuas in handbags craze,
and is also the proud owner of Princess Piglette
George Clooney, Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus, Jonathan Ross, Charlotte
Church and even the Beckhams have all kept pigs as pets over the past decade or so, while more recently Ariane Grande and
Pete Davidson adopted Piggy Smallz during their short-lived romance.
Comedian John Bishop gave rescue pig Milo a home for more
than a decade and was devastated when the pet passed away, saying he was
the ‘heartbeat’ of the family.
They’re as much a celeb accessory as oversized sunglasses – which is why
I’ve brought those with me too.
But first things first. Before I spend an afternoon taking a petite
pig for a stroll, I sit down with Olivia in the Kew Little Pigs cafe, to complete the
theory side of the Comprehensive Guide to Pig Keeping.
It turns out there is quite a lot of admin involved in owning a pig, alongside a rule book
thicker than Harry Potter.
Who knew that you needed a license to walk a pig? Who would imagine that
you can’t feed pigs your kitchen leftovers?
It used to be common practice, but has been banned because of the risk of diseases such as African swine flu and foot and mouth disease that can be spread
by consuming contaminated pork products.
Who can fathom having to fill out a form to drive your pig from one place to another – again for disease
control reasons?
After all the admin and mucking out, Samantha was delighted to
move on to the fun part – cuddles with Astrid
Samantha found that mucking out the pig pen was actually a lot more civilised than picking up poo on a dog walk
Samantha came armed with wellies for her day at the farm, but made sure to
keep it glamorous
After swapping her flimsy trainers for wellies, Samantha felt equipped to
tackle her day on the farm
And who would guess that pigs have to have their
own house? I mean, it’s only got to be about
the size of shed, but it’s actually a law to uphold welfare
standards.
I suppose none of this is an issue for celebrities who have people to do paperwork
for them – not to mention acres of space – but to me
it seems insurmountable.
Olivia senses that my dreams are crushed and attempts to reassure me:
‘It’s really not that much paperwork. Look, filling in this form would take two minutes.’
Moving on from the theory, we head outside for the practical part of the course.
Here, in large pens, are lots of little pigs which are super cute, so this makes me happy.
I am given a rake to claw the pig poo into a dustpan.
Both the rake and the dustpan have long handles and I like the distance this creates.
It is certainly more civilised than picking up poo in a flimsy plastic bag on a dog walk.
Clearing away pig excrement with proper equipment which allows you to maintain a civilised, and sanitary,
distance makes me wonder if – despite the paperwork – pigs
might just trump dogs.
Samantha was worried she might attract stares walking Astrid through town, but nobody batted an eyelid
Samantha treated herself to a hot chocolate while Astrid enjoyed some pig treats
Samantha swapped her wellington boots for high heels to
glam up to take her pet pig down to the town centre for lunch
Taking a pig out for a walk is trickier than it looks,
and a lot of treats are required to keep things on track
Next, Olivia asks if I would like to feed the pigs. Yes of course!
She hands me some hay that’s stuffed inside what’s basically a large fishnet stocking, the
size of Santa’s sack. The hay sticks out of all the holes, and it’s my job to hang up
the sack in the pig pen, so the pigs can eat from it.
This sounds easy. Only it’s not. ‘NOT THERE!
NO! IT’S GOT TO BE HIGHER! TIE IT ROUND THE POST! NO!
NOT LIKE THAT! NO!’
I feel like a failing contestant on The Crystal Maze, only this is worse because I’m now surrounded by hungry pigs and I cannot see a panic button.
I swear there was something on Netflix where murdered bodies were dumped in a pig pen, to be eaten by the pigs.
Or maybe the bodies were eaten alive. This definitely happens all
the time, according to TV, and now I don’t even know which is worse, the prospect of being felled by pigs eating
through my ankles, or the pressure to hang
the hay correctly.
It is like my challenge on The Crystal Maze has been especially devised to amuse the inhabitants of
hell.
I find myself grateful to make it out of the pig pen alive.
Surely I get to do celebrity stuff now?
Celebrities’ pigs are as stylish as their owners, so I’ve sourced designer outfits for my trottered chums.
I’d initially looked at diamond chokers by Dior, because what pig wouldn’t
want a diamond collar? But apparently pigs are happier in harnesses, which fit around the
body, not just the neck.
I hunt for a harness that an A-lister might pick for their pig, and I am delighted to discover a pink leopard print harness with a matching lead.
It is by Urban Pup, a pet fashion brand whose website I’ve now spent more time on than all the other websites in my search history.
There’s the zebra print, the cheetah print, the pink argyle; the florals, the tartans, and the hearts.
There’s the range inspired by Legally Blonde and the pet carrier that resembles a pink Chanel handbag.
Then there are the socks…
I turn up at the farm with more outfits for the pigs than I have for myself.
I guess this is what it’s like being a pig parent: #SELFLESS
I am introduced to Astrid, a 16 month old micro piglet who’ll fulfill my
dreams of walking a pig. I show Olivia all the outfits I’ve brought from Urban Pup and she picks
out a pink tartan harness with a matching lead.
I want to dress up all the pigs but Olivia says no. That’s
OK. There is probably some law about only one pig at a time looking this stunning.
When Astrid and I are dressed, we head into Old Amersham.
It’s a pretty market town in the Chilterns with cobbled streets and quaint white buildings with beams.
So how will locals feel about a pig on a
lead?
I imagine I may be sternly spoken to by a member of the Women’s
Institute. However, it turns out that Old Amersham is perfectly au fait with celebrity
antics, given that Poirot, Midsomer Murders and Four Weddings and a Funeral have all been filmed there.
On my pig keeping course I have learnt that pigs never poo where they eat, sleep or
socialise, because they’re very clean, so from day
one, without any training, a pig will go outside to poo.
I am surprised then, as I arrive in Old
Amersham, to find that Astrid has done her business in her carry box.
I try not to think about this, as I hold her lead.
Our first stop is the Amersham Museum. I’m not a massive fan of walking around looking at
things, but I hear the museum homes a Tudor dining table that visitors are welcome to sit at.
It is about lunchtime, so I’m hopeful I’ll be served a Tudor banquet.
I quite fancy a tankard of wine and a bit of wild boar.
Unfortunately, Astrid does not, and so, despite being welcomed
by museum director Briony, we leave pretty much as soon as we arrive.
We go for a stroll instead, but I have to scatter
pig food pellets to coax Astrid along the pavement. I guess celebrities get their assistants to walk
ahead, trailing treats to entice the pet pigs in the right direction.
Hard at work: Writer Samantha Rea tried the Comprehensive Guide to Pig Keeping, which teaches
you everything you need to know before buying your own micro pig
However, doing it without an assistant, I find myself thinking that it’s
definitely easier to walk a dog.
Celebrity life is about lounging in luxurious surroundings, so
Astrid and I head to The Griffin, a private members club, bistro and bakery, that’s pretty much the Soho House of Amersham.
In the beamed building that dates back to the 17th century, there are
gorgeous leather sofas and cosy cushions. However, I have learnt on my pig keeping course that
pigs are happiest alfresco, so Astrid and I take a seat on the astro-turf terrace, beneath a pretty parasol
that wouldn’t be out of place in a Cotswolds shoot for Tatler.
It is here, as we relax like A-listers, that Astrid and I are at our happiest.
As I sip a coffee and eye-up a chocolate brownie (I’m being a celebrity, remember, I don’t actually eat these things), Astrid puts her trotters up on the seat beside me and enjoys
a few pig food pellets.
Clearly this is our natural environment,
so it’s probably just a matter of time before Astrid is snapped up by a celebrity to live life first class.
But for now, Astrid must mooch back to the mud, and I must head home to wash
pig poo off my wellies.
I am chuffed to bits to have spent an afternoon with Astrid, but as I think it all over, on the train back to Marylebone, I know that I’ll
never keep a pig as a pet.
Aside from all the legal red tape, my lack of space in London, and the trickiness of trying to take
a pig for a walk, there’s always the fear that the micro pig might turn out to be not so
tiny after all.
I’ve seen headlines about 4 ounce «teacup» pigs growing bigger than a bear, and frankly
I find it terrifying. So I’ll leave the pet pigs to the celebrities.

Britons avoided ‘big-ticket’ purchases for their homes
and vehicles in the third quarter, as pre-Budget uncertainty compounded pressure on their finances according to retailers.
Consumer sentiment weakened during September as Britons put more cash into
savings amid fears of a looming tax raid in the Budget.
But retail sales still rose by more than expected
over the month, driven by a jump in non-food volumes, and aided by easing inflation and solid wage growth – highlighting the uncertain environment faces by high street firms.
Caution: Retailers say Britons are still holding off on ‘big-ticket’ spending
DIY group Wickes told investors on Tuesday its design and
installation business had seen sales contract 14.1 per cent year
on year to £245.9million as of 28 September, dragging
group revenues 1.6 per cent per cent lower to £1.19billion.
The group said a third quarter decline in design and installation of 7.2
per cent reflected ‘the continued challenging environment for
larger ticket purchases’.
However, it said these sales were ‘stabilising’ after double-digit
declines in the first two quarters of 2024. It also reflects the inclusion of Solar
Fast sales after Wickes bought a majority stake
in the business in March.

Wickes’ retail business has maintained growth,
adding 2.2 per cent year-to-date to £945.3million, driven by bumper TradePro sales and consumers
‘catching up on outdoor projects delayed by the wet
weather during spring and early summer’, the group said.
Boss David Wood added: ‘Our excellent value
and service-led offer keeps home improvers coming back to Wickes.
‘We’ve seen pleasing further progress in retail, successfully growing volumes and
increasing market share, driven by a particularly strong performance in TradePro.’
It follows a recent update from rival Kingfisher, which told investors that customers repairing,
maintaining and renovating their homes offset weaker
demand for ‘big-ticket’ items such as bathrooms and kitchens.
Decline: Consumer confidence fell sharply in September according to the GfK index
Motoring and cycling specialist Halfords warned investors on Tuesday its short-term trading outlook ‘remains uncertain,
particularly for big ticket discretionary purchases’
despite ‘pockets of improving consumer sentiment’ .
Industry figures from GfK show consumer confidence fell sharply last
month, with the group pinning the blame on the
looming budget.
Neil Bellamy, consumer insights director at GfK,
said: ‘Following the withdrawal of the winter fuel payments,
and clear warnings of further difficult decisions to come on tax, spending and
welfare, consumers are nervously awaiting the Budget decisions on 30 October.’
The group’s like-for-like sales were broadly flat
in the first half of its financial year as its autocentres business, which drives 40 per cent
of revenues, faces a ‘challenging’ tyres markets with
‘with price-conscious customers trading down into budget range’.
However, it enjoyed ‘strong growth’ in services, maintenance and repair, while motoring product sales in its retail business
‘proved more resilient than expected’.
Halfords is targeting cost savings of £30million for this year
in efforts to manage weaker consumer strength and
higher costs.
Chief executive Graham Stapleton said: ‘While consumers remain cautious in their discretionary spending compounded by uncertainty
around the contents of the upcoming Autumn Budget, we have continued to focus on controlling the controllables.
‘In this environment we are focused on optimising
the existing platform to drive near-term returns, while accelerating our investment in the
Fusion concept to position us for growth in the coming years.’

What do pop star Lily Allen, Olympic gold medal-winning diver Jack Laugher, tennis player Nick Kyrgios and 25-year-old Bonnie Blue from Nottingham, who has filmed herself having sex with hundreds of 18-year-old students (and sometimes their dads, too), all have in common?
Yes, you guessed it. They are all ‘creatives’ on OnlyFans, the adults-only online content
provider founded in 2016 by a young Essex businessman called Tim Stokely, which
is now one of the most visited (and lucrative) websites in the world.
Just last month, Lily Allen caused a stir by
revealing that she makes more money charging $10 (£8) –
the site works in dollars – for pictures of her feet on her
OnlyFans account labelled ‘La Dolca Feeta’ than she does from
her 7.5million monthly listeners on Spotify.
But Lily’s content is tame in comparison to much of the content on the site,
the sort company execs refer to as ‘spicy’. Everything from cheeky shots of bottoms
peeking out of bubble baths, blondes stirring vats of steaming pasta in G-strings, hot men waxing cars
in their pants, right through the sex spectrum to twosomes,
threesomes, sixsomes and hardcore pornographic videos.
But also because, thanks to the allure of OnlyFans and the astonishing sums that a teeny number of the platform’s 4.1million creatives are raking in, more and more young women (and
it is mostly young women) who would never have considered it before
are suddenly happy to join in and sell photos of, well,
pretty much anything, to pay rent, settle credit card
bills or splash out on nice holidays. Basically, a flashier life all round.
‘We feel empowered. We have agency. It’s completely up to
me if I take my top off or not,’ says one 21-year-old girl, who joined a year ago and makes enough in a week to cover a year’s student rent at Sheffield
University and prefers not to give her name.
‘And I am happy to do it because for once I make the rules, in the safety of my home and they’re paying me to do it.
It’s a mug’s game, but I am not the mug.’
For the benefit of those readers who are not among the site’s 305million users,
OnlyFans offers creators a platform where they can charge their fans a subscription fee ranging from $4.99 to $49.99 a month to look at their content, contact them (or more often access their
‘chatter’ – more of which later) and access often more explicit,
personalised, ‘à la carte’ content through ‘tips’.
OnlyFans model Bonnie Blue has filmed herself having sex with hundreds of 18-year-olds
Rapper Cardi B is said to make $9million (£7.1million) a
month from the site
Actress Bella Thorne, a former Disney child star, made a record-breaking $1million (£800,000) in 24
hours
‘Pay $10 to unlock this video’. ‘Click here for more spicy content’.
‘The more you pay, the more you see’. You get
the gist.
In 2023, the site generated a record $6.6billion (£5.2billion), of which the company takes a straight 20 per cent –
much less than YouTube – and the rest goes to
the ‘performers’.
It is unlike Instagram or other social media sites in that nothing is
suggested – instead, you have to search for, and then subscribe to, individual accounts to
see much more than profile pictures.
Which is a good thing, because while some of the content is anodyne, much is highly sexual and many people on the site
can bob freely from one to another. Perhaps a cookery hack one day, modelling new boots the next, then graduate to a few cheeky cleavage and bikini shots and more,
as the money becomes more tempting.
Every week, it seems, we hear of someone who has made millions.
Last month it was announced that American influencer Corinna Kopf had retired from the site, aged 28, after making $67million (£53million).
In her best month, she reportedly earned more than $2million (£1.6million).
Rapper Cardi B is said to earn more than $9million (£7.1million) a month
from the site.
Meanwhile, Darcie Rattles was an out-of-work bricklayer with £6,000 in credit card bills and debts
when she joined OnlyFans in 2022.
‘I was thinking: how the hell am I going to get to next week?
How am I going to pay my credit cards?’ she says in an online interview.
‘I’m young, I’ve got a good body and I’ve got
a lot of followers. It is what any girl would turn to.
It had been in the back of mind for two years, but then I did it.’
Within two days of launching, she had earned enough to pay off her debts.
Today, Darcie, who comes across as likeable, down-to-earth and has no qualms
about what she shares, claims to earn more than £250,000 a year.
Pop singer Lily Allen has discovered a niche market…
… she sells pictures of her feet for £8 and makes more money from her account labelled ‘La Dolca Feeta’ than she
does from her 7.5million monthly listeners on Spotify
‘It doesn’t matter to me whether I get my feet out, or my other bits out,’ she says.
Though it does tend to be the other bits,
because Darcie’s content promises very few clothes and, for
those who pay extra, ‘a naughty side to me you’ve never seen before’.
But even Darcie seems like the girl next door compared to Lily Phillips, a British model who earned £2,000 in her first 24 hours on the site and recently went
viral for sleeping with 101 men over a 14-hour period.
She has since announced she is planning to set a record of having sex with 1,000 men in 24 hours.
And Bonnie Blue, a beautiful blonde with a golden tan and astonishingly white teeth,
who has worked her way round Derby, Nottingham, Cancun and Australia, sleeping with university students.
On one night during Nottingham Trent freshers’ week – after publicising her stunt by wearing
a sandwich board that read: ‘Bonk me for free and let me
film it’ – she had boys queuing up from 6pm until five in the morning.
‘I got through them all,’ she said proudly in one interview in which she
reminds us that, thanks to OnlyFans, she has already banked more
than £3 million – for which she was applauded by her followers
for her entrepreneurship.
But all that is chicken feed when you consider the £370 million dividend that company owner
paid himself last year.
And these days that’s Leonid Radvinsky, who bought a majority stake from Tim Stokely in 2018, two years after he started the business with the help of a loan from his father.
It was the Covid-era lockdowns that thrust OnlyFans into the stratosphere.
Everyone shut up at home, nothing to do. In 2020, it generated revenues of $2.23billion (£1.8billion).
By 2021, it was up to $4.8billion (£3.8billion).
There was a brief hiatus in October of that year when they
tried banning sexually explicit content but that lasted about ten minutes before they
switched back.
There have been plenty of scandals along the way.
A BBC investigation back in 2021 revealed that children were not
just accessing the material online by foxing the age verification process but were also
selling explicit videos on the website. Leah, 17, had used a fake driving licence to set up an OnlyFans account
where she made £5,000 uploading revealing videos of
herself.
There have also been claims of OnlyFans creators using
public gyms and spaces to make adult content.
Recently there has been more concerns that the company is not doing enough to protect minors.
OnlyFans, however, prefers to portray itself as a force for good, with supporters arguing that it empowers people by
allowing them to sell content – over which they have full control
– directly to consumers. And many of the Gen Z generation seem to agree.
‘It’s fine. It’s empowering. It’s taking control,’ they cry, pointing out that
the site has loads of moderators and a tight security system to ensure
that all users are over 18.
And they say, anyway, that OnlyFans isn’t just about sex.
Of course, they’re right. It has long been awash
with pneumatic reality TV stars and the likes of Lottie Moss, Kerry
Katona and Katie Price, who are happy to tease their followers with a few cheeky peeks in skimpy bikinis.
I spend an afternoon browsing the site and, while it is not all ‘spicy’
content as the company executives like to call it, everything is dripping with sauce and promise.
The big lips, the push-up bras, even the way a pretty Spanish
chef is holding her paella pan. Company executives have been pushing hard to make the platform more mainstream –
offering contracts and financial incentives to encourage musicians, sports stars, cooks,
anyone really, to come on and share a bit of exclusive – or niche – content.
Really, anything that people will pay to look at – glimpses backstage
at concerts. Celebrities in the bath.
During the 2024 Olympic Games, a raft of athletes
jumped on the OnlyFans bandwagon to share pictures of their beautifully toned bodies.
Along with Jack Laugher, Team NZ rower Robbie Manson uses the site to share ‘exclusive content that tastefully explores
the boundaries, including artistic portrayals of nudity’ for $14.99 a month.
British speedskater
Olympic diver Jack Laugher is among a number of sports stars using OnlyFans
Reality TV star Kerry Katona has also teased followers
with content
Lottie Moss has also taken to the adults-only online
content provider that was founded in 2016 and is used by 4.1 million creatives
Elise Christie turned to the site when she found herself in financial difficulties.
All of which seems to be working well for them, but it can be rather murkier for others.
Not least because, in less than a decade, OnlyFans has spawned an entire support industry of ‘sugar daddies’ who support performers
financially and ‘chatters’ who work for them. ‘Sugar daddies’ tend to be older male
businessmen who ‘invest’ in promising creatives.
In what are referred to rather murkily as ‘mutually beneficial deals’, they invest in branding and marketing and videography to
boost traffic.
Chatters are different. For the real stars, the traffic is so high and the
interaction with followers so demanding that if they had to do it all themselves, there’s no
way they would ever have time to put their pyjamas back on.
So ‘chatters’ – a sort of online 21st-century Cyrano de
Bergerac – do that for them. Keeping them engaged,
online, needy and most of all, spending, spending, spending for more and more content.
Which means, of course, that the whole thing
is a total scam. The poor daft subscriber thinks he’s really
making a connection with ‘Racy Tracey from Twickenham’, but is more likely chatting to a middle-aged father
of three from the Philippines.
He will have learnt everything about Tracey – her favourite colour, favourite animal and favourite position –
have studied a script that reminds him ‘it’s all about
selling, selling, selling’, and will be being paid $4 an hour for his efforts.
Or the subscriber could just be talking to an AI bot – which perhaps is more
appealing.

A year after split, I’ve had a baby and got engaged, writes Mother Pukka ANNA WHITEHOUSE
Chatters can be dangerous. As Alanya, a paralegal from Scotland, discovered when she learned that one of her most enthusiastic followers had travelled
to her home town to find her, encouraged by her chatter.
‘My chatter told him that I loved him. I would never, ever have said that,’ she said.
But, sadly, chatters, sugar daddies and stalkers are not
a problem for most creatives. Almost all of whom are still struggling to
make any proper money, however many clothes they take off.
They will never know the clout of Cardi B, or Lily Allen,
or former Disney child star Bella Thorne, who famously made a record- breaking $1million (£800,000)
in 24 hours when she joined in August 2020. (Though initially there was some confusion as
to whether she would be appearing nude or not. She did not – which caused quite a rumpus.)
Because, unlike celebrities who can redirect their existing social media followers to their OnlyFans accounts, most people find it hard to grab attention without doing something, well, grabby.
So, despite all the tales of golden riches, the average earnings of an OnlyFans creative is
still just $150 (£118) a month and, with the market now so flooded, is only likely
to go one way.
And it’s easy to see how, if you’re a young
woman who has convinced yourself that you’re in control, empowered and mistress
of your own destiny, you could find yourself moving inevitably
and inexorably up (or perhaps down) the scale, revealing more and more.
Until, before you know it, like Bonnie Blue and Lily Phillips, you’ve kept nothing back for yourself.

Australian politicians are almost always opting to fly with Qantas on taxpayer-funded trips,
despite Virgin offering cheaper tickets.
Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80
per cent of work trips last year despite it not always being the cheapest route,
according to travel data provided to the government.
While politicians and their staffers are required to book the cheapest flight, it also has
to be the most efficient, with Qantas offering the most routes between major cities.
MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like ordinary Aussies can, but they can can receive lifetime status credits, which allows access to airport lounges and flight upgrades.
‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of Qantas in securing bookings by parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote
in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review.
‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’
Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings by government officials which will be conducted by the Department of Finance this
year, despite there being just two months left of 2024.
Politicians’ preference for Qantas may also be put down to the
airline’s exclusive invite-only ‘Chairman’s Lounge’.

The Flying Kanga-RORT – why you’re footing the bill as airlines wine and dine pollies in VIP club
Daily Mail Australia in August revealed that nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership of the club.
Qantas and the Albanese government have both denied the airline enjoys any disproportionate level of influence over
the country’s political classes.
A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both the House of Representatives and the Senate
– revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.
The high profile ranks of government giftees include Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as well as every member of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant
ministers.
While most politicians declared their Qantas’ privileges
as a ‘gift’, Labor MP Marion Scrymgour listed her membership as her ‘Chairman Lounge entitlement’.
Daily Mail Australia in August revealed that nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership of Qantas’ exclusive
Chairman’s Lounge.
And it’s not just politicians on the take, with more than 60 MPs – including Marles, Chalmers, King, Bill Shorten,
Zali Steggall and Tanya Plibersek – disclosing
their spouses have also been granted unfettered, independent access to
Qantas’ luxurious members only lounge.
Often touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’,
membership to the Chairman’s Lounge has long been veiled in secrecy.
Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent VIP clubs – in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth
airports – are suitably discreet.
Though, once inside, the designer lounges are immediately more ostentatious,
with free à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of
wines and Champagne and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.
Membership to the club is ‘priceless’ – it
cannot be bought for any amount of money nor obtained
via any amount of frequent flyers points.
Instead, each member is hand-picked and approved by the company’s chief executive
and chairman.

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency
and integrity is at the heart of their reason for
entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major
parties look set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount
candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent
the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations,
thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations
in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to
influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will
be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations
need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you only find out the details of who has
given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money
being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy
and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’
Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot – saying if it
serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort, not reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said: ‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as
opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them
a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that
these important transparency measures stamping out the
influence of the wealthy must have been proposed
by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the
major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put
forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and
Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such
as Clive Palmer
Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes
à Court
The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations
rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)
The major parties have long complained about the influence
the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the
scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the
past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile from reforms
that will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and
understand the changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the
opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of
taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented,
the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being
advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard
false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday against
the dollar, but is headed for its tenth straight weekly loss amid concerns that new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump will heighten strains on the struggling Chinese economy.
Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected to drive
up U.S. inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling too
much. «We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,» Lynn Song, Greater China chief economist at ING, said in a note.
However, «we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.» The yuan was changing hands at
7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved from the previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a
one-year low of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest weekly losing
streak since 2018. The dollar index fell to one-week
low overnight and «the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building» in the yuan, aided by ongoing attempts by China’s central bank to restrain its
decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC Capital Markets.
Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic recovery, with manufacturing activities improving, but property sales in many Chinese cities remaining weak.
China’s «economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,»
said John Browning, managing director of BANDS Financial.
He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week’s Central Economic Work Conference, as «Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.» Top
policymakers will gather at the conference to agree on major economic goals for
next year.
But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched indicators globally for clues of Beijing’s
near-term policy intentions, likely will not be officially announced until an annual parliament
meeting in March. During Trump’s first term as president,
the yuan weakened about 5% against the dollar after the initial round of
U.S.
tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5% a year later when trade tensions escalated.
Growth worries and expectations of further monetary easing by Beijing pushed China’s
10-year treasury yields below 2% to record lows this week, worsening the yield disadvantage against
the U.S., and exerting downward pressure on the
yuan. ING’s Song expects the onshore yuan to
move within a band between 7.00-7.40 per dollar, but could fall further
to 7.50 «if tariffs come in earlier or more aggressive than our forecasts.» LEVELS AT 03:47 GMT GMT INSTRUME CURRENT UP/DOWN( % CHANGE DAY’S
