Smile 2 – starring Naomi Scott, Lukas Gage and Jack Nicholson’s son Ray – emerged as the winner after a horror movie
box office showdown.

Joker: Folie À Deux director Todd Phillips ‘wanted nothing
to do with DC’ during making of the $200million flop film,
a new report has claimed.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning
film – stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures – but was slammed by
critics and failed to ignite at the box office.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical
and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’
during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the
film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million]
worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does
not include a DC Studios logo.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a critic score of 32%

claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.

with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind
of a Warner Bros. movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips  shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to
filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

Most critics have said Todd failed to use Gaga correctly in the movie and claimed she
was only bought in for the musical aspect of it.

While the majority of critics say Joker: Folie À Deux didn’t
live up to expectations, others have dubbed the movie ‘bold’
and ‘brilliant.’ 

Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but
said it lacked any thrill. 

The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is best
remembered as one of the most subversive and original films of the last decade, while its
hugely anticipated sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie
just two stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first
movie’s $1billion success.

Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to
bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea what
to do with her. 

Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

campy, kitschy.’

The brother of a British base jumper has revealed the ‘simple’ mistake he made with his parachute that caused
him to plunge to his death from a tower block in Thailand.

Nathy Odinson, 33, from Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, illegally climbed to
the top of the 29th floor in an apartment building in the coastal resort of Pattaya on Saturday night
before unwittingly leaping to his death.

Now his brother Ed Harrison, 39, has said chilling video footage of the daredevil’s last
moments shows that his mini pilot chute was caught in his
harness, meaning there was ‘no chance’ it would have deployed.

Mr Harrison, from St Neots, said that despite his brother’s
significant experience – having undertaken ‘5,000 jumps around
the world’ – he made the fatal error ‘without realising’ and leapt to his death.

Paying tribute, Mr Harrison told The Sun that his sibling ‘will
be missed by so many… He was fun-loving and joyful and great with kids.
He was a hero to my three.’

see ya’ before jumping into the night sky.

He is then sent into a terrifying death spiral with the small parachute flailing through the
air.

In a final image posted on the tattooed daredevil’s Instagram
yesterday Mr Odinson can be seen angled forwards with his arms
pointed out behind him as he whips through the air in a green helmet.

Wearing vans for the audacious stunt, he skims a dusty floor as he is suspended beneath a
green parachute.

He captioned the post with a run of hashtags – including ‘extremesports’,
‘adrenaline junkie’, ‘skydiveuk’, ‘chinesetiktok’ and ‘thaiskyadventures’.

The same picture, which was also posted on Facebook yesterday, has been flooded by followers sending their tributes – as dozens posted ‘RIP’ underneath.

Cornish photographer Jordan Colwill said: ‘Love you forever brother, will miss you so f*****g
much. Can’t believe it.’

In the shocking video Mr Odinson can then be heard landing in a tree
before hitting the ground with a sickening thud. Paramedics
pronounced him dead at the scene.

Tourist police in Pattaya were alerted to the accident at 7.30pm and rushed to the condo building in Tambon Na Klua in Bang
Lamung district of Chonburi province and found Odinson’s body on the
ground.

A round blue parachute was found on his body and was not fully deployed.

Traumatised security guard Kanet Chansong, 33, said: ‘I heard the
sound of the tree and I thought it was a fallen branch hitting the ground.

‘A woman screamed so I walked over and realised it was
person. They were dead. I saw that they had jumped from the building.’

In the video, Mr Odinson asks the person recording him from the other side
of a security wall if his helmet camera has the red light
flashing to indicate it is recording. When he realises it was not
recording, Nathy removes his helmet and presses the button before briefly checking his parachute.

Mr Odinson was a regular daredevil and had performed skydives
and base jumps around the world

The security guard said that he had jumped from the building several
times before, which posed a risk for pedestrians walking below

Police have informed the British Embassy in Bangkok, which is contacting Mr Odinson’s
relatives in the United Kingdom

His friend, a Thai local, exclaims ‘oh f***’ when he hears Mr
Odinson hit the ground. The emergency services were called shortly after.

Staff at the Lumpini Ville Naklua condo checked
CCTV and saw that Mr Odinson and a friend had parked outside then waited for a time when it
was quiet before sneaking into the building.

They then headed onto the roof of the building, with Mr Odison clambering
over a small concrete wall on the roof of the building into order to
reach the edge.

The security guard said that he had jumped from the building
several times before, which posed a risk for pedestrians walking below.

He added: ‘They were making video content for social media.
They had done this before and they knew it was not allowed.’

Police and paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after 7:30pm local time.
However, Mr Odinson could not be saved.

Police Lieutenant Kamolporn Nadee, Deputy Inspector
of Investigations at the Bang Lamung district police station, said there were no
initial signs that Mr Odinson had been attacked.

The policeman said: ‘The parachute that the deceased used to jump malfunctioned and was not centered as expected.
He was in a terrible state when we arrived.

‘The friend who recorded the video of him jumping was questioned and
the video was examined as evidence.

‘Forensics officers are investigating the case further.
They are examining the parachute.’

Mr Odinson was a regular daredevil and had performed skydives and base
jumps around the world. He ran a ‘sky photography’ company and took customers on private
skydives.

Police have informed the British Embassy in Bangkok, which is contacting Mr Odinson’s relatives in the United Kingdom.

Gaga told her co-star: ‘I think we transformed into our characters over a period of time and we continued to hone in every kind
of detail.’

The last time that actor Joaquin played The Joker, he had to drop over forty pounds (three and
a half stone). He went on a diet of lettuce, asparagus and apples which
he said made him almost lose his mind.

Five years later he has returned to the Oscar-winning
role again in Joker: Folie a Deux – and says that
he had to lose almost the same amount of weight once more, and is never doing it again.

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival he said: ‘I’m not going
to talk through specifics of the diet, because I just think
nobody wants to hear that.

‘But this time, it felt a bit more complicated just because there was so much dance rehearsal that we
were doing, which I didn’t have last time. 

‘It felt a bit more difficult, but it is safe. But you’re right, I’m now 49,
I probably shouldn’t do this again. This is probably it for me.’ 

Joaquin was discussing his personal weight loss for the original 2019 film before praising the Poker
Face hitmaker whose real name is Stefani Germanotta
as he said: ‘Stefani also lost a lot of weight. I remember when I
first met you in rehearsals and then you went away for like a month and then you came
back, you lost a lot of weight’

The last time that actor Joaquin Phoenix played The Joker, Arthur Fleck, he
had to drop three and a half stone – and he has revealed
he had to do so again

He added: ‘I know I was responsible last time for talking about it, but it’s
difficult to do so. 

‘That becomes your obsession because you’re working the entire time to get
to a certain weight.

‘So then you end up talking about it, and then it just sounds like an actor going on and on about how much weight they lost.

‘By the end of that run I was so sick of myself and angry at
myself for making such a big deal about that part, because you just do what
you’re ****ing supposed to do. So this time I was like,
‘I’m not going to do that’.’

He then whispered: ‘It was 47 pounds,’ before adding: ‘No, I’m joking.
I don’t know.’

Co star Lady Gaga, who plays a music therapist at
Arkham Asylum, said: ‘We rehearsed the waltz in the film for
two months which kind of falls apart. 

‘When Joaquin was too hungry we fed him blueberries.’

Phoenix said: ‘Part of the joy for me was to take standards and find a
way that was specific to the characters. 

‘That was part of what was interesting for us. We started off with references
like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr and we started to emulate that sound.’

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival he said: ‘I’m not going to talk

Five years after the first film, he has returned to the Oscar-winning role again in Joker: Folie a
Deux – and says that he had to lose almost the same amount of weight once more, and is

dance rehearsal that we were doing, which I didn’t have last time,
‘ Joaquin said of the weight loss this time round 

Joaquin’s weight loss for the first film somewhat ‘obsessed’ with his weight where he also
developed a ‘disorder’ over pounds (Seen left in the first film and right ahead of filming)

He added that his co-star Lady Gaga, real name Stephanie Germanotta ‘wanted to sing live and I did not.
In the end, every part of the recording was live.’ 

Gaga said: ‘The way music is used is to
give characters a way to express themselves because the dialogue is not enough.’ 

She had to forget her professional training: ‘It was about
unlearning technique and forgetting how to breathe.’

Director Todd Phillips said that he felt the pressure after the success of The Joker. 

He said: ‘I’m more nervous of this one than the first one.
The first one we were under the radar, this one everyone was writing on the internet about it.’

The Warner Bros film is released on October 4th.

After the release of the first film, Joaquin shut
down rumours he only ate an apple a day to achieve his
astonishing weight loss, telling Access Hollywood that he consumed
more food than that  ⁠— though not much more.  

‘It wasn’t an apple a day. No, you’ve also got lettuce and steamed green beans,’ he
said of what he ate in preparation for the role.

While speaking with Access Hollywood, Joaquin explained he consulted with a doctor to ensure he lost weight as
safely as possible

Although Joaquin has lost weight for roles before,
he admitted that ‘Joker’ director Todd Phillips didn’t make it easy on him. 

The Her star recalled how the producer always had the one food item he craved on hand, which made his diet a
bit more of a struggle. 

‘Todd did have these f*****g pretzels that
I love. And he’d just have bags of them in his office!’
he said. ‘And that was difficult.’ 

Joaquin’s character is wearyingly thin in the film, and he
admitted that he had reservations about taking on such a drastic weight loss. 

‘It’s a horrible way to live,’ he told the New
York Times. ‘I think [the Joker] should be kind of heavy.

Todd was like, ‘I think you should do the real thin person.»

Joaquin previously said his extreme diet helped him prepare for the
role in more ways than one. 

‘The first thing for us was the weight loss — I think that’s really what I started with,’ he said of
working with the film’s director.

Vachon later called the experience a ‘nightmare,’ but she defended the film
from critics who claimed only a gay actor should have been cast in Phoenix’s role.

She reminded the writers of rude social media comments
that Phoenix was the person who brought the project to her and Haynes,
meaning he couldn’t be separated from the film.

Vachon also defended her production company’s record of
hiring actors in the LGBTQ community, and she said
that the criticism was only making the ‘terrible situation even worse.’
