The average American will consume an average of 3,000 to 4,500 calories
at Thanksgiving, with turkey, potatoes and pie piled
on their plates.

But a New York-based fitness coach says that her ten-step fitness routine will help
burn the bulk of the festive feast off in just four sessions. 

Talking to DailyMail.com, Natalya Alexeyenko said that her simple at-home workout ‘should burn up to 500 calories in 30 to 45 for most individuals.’

She continues: ‘If you’re performing it at a higher intensity
with resistance bands or minimal rest, the burn could reach 600 calories or more.

‘Of course, the calories burned during this workout depends on several factors,
including your weight, fitness level, and intensity. But on average you should burn 300 to 500 calories.’

To start, Alexeyenko suggests warming up with jumping jacks for one minute. 

These she says are great at burning off ‘dinner rolls or cornbread’ as ‘quick, light carbs need dynamic, full-body
movements to offset.’

In terms of performing the move, the personal trainer says: ‘This full-body warm-up activates
muscles and elevates your heart rate. 

Talking to DailyMail.com, New York-based fitness trainer Natalya Alexeyenko says her
workout ‘should burn up to 500 calories in 30 to 45 for most individuals’

Next up, Alexeyenko recommends ten reps of burpees –

She says that the ‘explosive energy required is perfect for tackling high-protein and fatty dishes’ and for
added resistance, you can place above your knees.

Moving down to the floor, 10 side planks with hip dips
is the third move Alexeyenko suggests. Try to hold the position for two minutes.

These are good for balancing out calorie-dense desserts, she says, as they focus on the core.

She instructs: ‘Hold a side plank and slowly lower and raise your hips. 

‘This strengthens the obliques, shoulders, and glutes.
Adding a resistance band above your knees increases the intensity.’ 

Keeping the momentum up, 10 push-ups are the fourth move to perform
to ‘tone the chest, shoulders, and triceps while engaging the core for stability.’

Push-ups can help to get rid off mashed potatoes, the fitness
coach claims. 

Alexeyenko says: ‘This compound upper-body movement helps tackle starchy, calorie-packed sides.’

Pushing things up a gear, the fifth move involves
shadowboxing with dumbbells for two minutes.

The training exercise, which involves throwing punches at the air as if you’re fighting an opponent, ‘works the arms,
legs, and core while building endurance and coordination.’ 

This fast-paced movement is said to be ‘ideal for offsetting sugary
or carb-heavy dishes such as cranberry sauce or sweet potato casserole.’

If you don’t have dumbbells, you can use miscellaneous
items int he house or simply do it with your hands. 

In at sixth place in the ten-step routine, are ten squat jumps
to burn off ‘stuffing or mac and cheese’, with the lower-body exercise ‘strengthening the legs and
improving explosive power.’

For a more intense workout, Alexeyenko suggests adding a resistance band above the knees to work the glutes harder.

Requiring a little more skill is the seventh move, which involves performing three rounds of ‘around the world planks’ spending 15 seconds on each side.  

Offering advice on how to perform the move, Alexeyenko
says: ‘While holding a plank, lift one arm, then the opposite leg,
alternating in a controlled motion. 

‘This works the shoulders, core, and stabilizing muscles.

The slow, controlled move engages stabilizing muscles to target
rich, creamy Thanksgiving sides, such as creamed spinach or green bean casserole.

‘Resistance bands around your wrists can increase
the difficulty.’

Alexeyenko recommends performing the workout over the
course of several days, instead of trying to burn off more
than 4,000 calories in one session

The eighth step in Alexeyenko’s workout plan requires 30 seconds worth of mountain climbers. 

The boxing fanatic says this fast-paced move, which engages
the arms and legs, is ‘perfect for burning off quick sugars, such as cranberry sauce or that extra
slice of pie’.

Rounding out the workout, are 10 kettlebell swings
to ‘target the glutes, hamstrings, and core while keeping
your heart rate elevated.’ 

Alexeyenko says this ‘combination of strength and cardio makes
this move a great match for rich, heavy calories such as gravy’.

To finish things off, the workout ends with high knees for one minute to ‘tackle liquid calories like wine or cider.’

This cardio move helps to ‘keep your heart rate up while activating the
core and legs’. 

To make the ten-step Thanksgiving workout more effective,
Alexeyenko recommends monitoring your heart rate during the exercises. 

For optimal calorie burn, she says you should aim to keep your heart rate within 70-85 percent of your
maximum heart rate (MHR). 

To calculate your MHR Alexeyenko says you can use the following formula: 220
minus your age. 

She explains: ‘For example, if you’re 30 years old,
your MHR is 190 beats per minute, so your target range would be approximately 133-162 bpm. 

‘Staying in this zone ensures you’re working
efficiently while avoiding overexertion.’

If your heart rate goes above your target range during any
of these exercises, Alexeyenko warns that it’s ‘essential
to pause and recover before continuing.’

She also recommends performing the workout over the course of several
days, instead of trying to burn off more than 4,000 calories in one session. 

She concludes: ‘Burning 4,000 calories in a single day is extreme and not something I’d recommend
for most people. 

‘Such a goal requires hours of intense activity, which could lead to fatigue or injury. 

‘Instead, I’d recommend focusing on creating a moderate calorie
deficit over the next few days through consistent
exercise and balanced nutrition.

‘It’s also important to remember that one or two days of
overeating won’t ruin your progress. The weight gain you
may see is mostly water retention, not fat. 

‘Simply returning to your normal routine, staying hydrated, and
eating nutrient-dense meals will help you feel back on track.’

The song was originally released in 1950 and its title translates into English as

performance to cheers from the crowd, whilst viewers at home
were also left emotional.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first
time author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio. 

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge –
The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has
led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia
his book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line
to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr
Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu. 

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot. 

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and
said he was hiding his employment history. 

‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal
Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’
the Prime Minister said. 

But before the book even gets to the contents page there
is a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas
corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP
Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison. 

‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed,
it’s in the first line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book launch. 

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave
the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims
about him the Prime Minister made. 

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures
and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they
create,’ he said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is a former Australian Financial
Review columnist, wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.

‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming
me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about,
which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you were the Transport
Minister? The answer is «yes» and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should
refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of
a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are
struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his credibility
has led to calls for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get this far.
I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese.
This book is about Qantas. 

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides
of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you name it.
They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia. I’m
not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with
Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia
and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese. 

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is
with the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long
time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him,
is what I’ve seen. 

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets
and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis. 

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and
he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars
to sit in the front row of the International Grand Slam.
He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s
on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book are) just another example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel
to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their flight
can be upgraded. 

The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a
very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking
and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where
the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed.
You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going
«Geez, I hope there is a spare seat».

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the
only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO.
No other executive can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there. 

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars
and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying
around in the front of the plane on personal travel. 

‘A normal person would say «Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

Joker: Folie À Deux director Todd Phillips ‘wanted nothing to
do with DC’ during making of the $200million flop film,
a new report has claimed.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film – stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and was considered
a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures – but was slammed by critics and failed to ignite at
the box office.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with
an agent familiar with Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during
the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it
makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up
because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC
Studios logo.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and
a critic score of 32%

disappointing follow-up’ by critics

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner-
with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no
to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather
than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift
speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of
a Warner Bros. movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips  shortly
after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel
at a lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static. 

The sequel has been roundly criticized for

studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history as the film bombed at the box office on opening night. 

It has only made $114million worldwide against its $200million budget. 

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October 4, but it only
raked in $20 million at the domestic box office, per The Hollywood Reporter. 

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn). 

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the
lowest score for a comic book movie. 

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with
a C+.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of
31% and a critic score of 32%. 

The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at
the domestic box office during the entirety of opening
weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter. 

Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million –
but the number has since drastically dropped. 

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters –
and eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the global box office. 

The first movie – which was also directed by
Todd Phillips – had a budget of between $55 and $70
million. However, the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200 million. 

The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both
critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the 76th
Venice International Film Festival. 

Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker (Arthur Fleck)
– and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best
Original Score. 

The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month in September,
where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.

Most critics have said Todd failed to use Gaga correctly in the movie and claimed she was only bought in for the musical aspect of it.

While the majority of critics say Joker: Folie À Deux didn’t live up to expectations, others
have dubbed the movie ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant.’ 

Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said it
lacked any thrill. 

The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is best
remembered as one of the most subversive and original films of
the last decade, while its hugely anticipated
sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the
movie just two stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s
$1billion success.

Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea what
to do with her. 

Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

Joker: Folie à Deux was quickly booted from its top spot at the box office after only one week and replaced
by a spooky new champ.

With Halloween quickly approaching, Terrifier 3 slashed
its way to the top of the box office over the
weekend. The plot about a deadly clown named Art, determined to literally kill the Christmas
holiday spirit in a small town, earned $18.3
million at the box office according to The Numbers.

The low-budget thriller, made for about $2 million and written and directed by Damien Leone,
is an un-rated blood fest, which has received a 78-percent rating from the critics
on Rotten Tomatoes.  Audiences have ‘certified’ it ‘hot’ and
given it a healthy 90-percent on the popcornmeter.

Holding on to second place was The Wild Robot, an animated adventure about a robot named Roz who
is stranded on a small island after being shipwrecked.
There, she bonds with the animals, who are her new neighbors, and begins taking
care of an orphaned goose. 

Lupita Nyong’o voices Roz, while Pedro Pascal, Mark Hamill, Catherine O’Hara and Ving Rhames
offer their voices to other characters.

Lady Gaga in ‘shock’ at poor reaction to Joker 2 as her
team scramble to distract from the flop

The film is likely to be a hot contender during the upcoming
awards season, having recived a 98-percent rating from both
critics and moviegoers on Rotten Tomatoes. 

It earned $13.45 million over the weekend. So far, the film has pulled in more than $83.7
million domestically and more than $64 million internationally for a global take

told with Lego characters.

Artists Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg,
Jay-Z and more appear as Lego characters in Williams’ musical journey.  The movie
was a hit with fans who helped it earn $3.8 million even though it
was shown in less than 2,000 theaters.

from NBC network executives.

The highly anticipated dramady continues to delight audiences who turned some
$7.05 million for a fourth place finish

Debuting at number five is the Pharrell Williams biopic
Piece by Piece. The animated story of Williams’ rise

The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country’s movers and shakers where secret deals were done in private luxury first exploded into the public eye back in 2007.

Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars
wining and dining the nation’s political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP
lounges was relatively unknown.

It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the CEO of Qantas had
even started, when he was boss of the comparatively lowly budget airline, Jetstar.

And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls leading up to an election in next year, the prospects back in 2007
were rosy for Labor. 

The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide
that would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and John Howard lose his own seat. 

The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s Lounge then wasn’t about a prime minister’s
privileges, although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were
certainly both members during their terms as PM. 

But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge member – revealed a politically
charged remark made within the club’s hallowed
walls, the cat was out of the bag.

The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock
star turned senator Peter Garrett that Labor would change the policies it campaigned on if it won government – did not deter his party from romping in on election day.

In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that
of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister.

Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002 during
a row before the 2007 election won by Kevin Rudd which let the cat out of the bag about the VIP club

The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending
his disclosure of Garrett’s remark, Steve Price had to explain what the private enclave
actually was.

In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s
Lounge is a separate frequent flyers lounge away from the crowded normal Qantas Club. 

‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are
approved by the Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson. 

‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’

In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was also a member of
lounge.

Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness to the remark Price said Garrett had made.

Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors and performers, and well-known writers and
sports people are said to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership of around 6000.

Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was a confidential conversation in a private place, but
which exposed him to criticism over his own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio show.

‘Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock membership of its
Chairman’s Lounge, which is supposedly to enable our elite politicians and business leaders some
privacy from the hoi polloi?’ demanded Crikey reporter Stephen Mayne at the
time.

‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and confidentiality,’ he said, accusing
Price of breaking ‘a confidence’.

The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by Alan Joyce, Geoff
Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry into the club’s hushed confines.

Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership was ‘so exclusive that you have to
be personally invited by the airline’s chieftain’, Nine newspapers reported in 2008.

‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that the mega rich and powerful avoid having to mingle with the
riffraff who will be travelling cattle class.

‘Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive club have included Pauline Hanson.

‘Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is currently enjoying a
prolonged exposure to cattle-class in Kirkconnell Correctional Centre.’ (Cooper was the
former HIH insurance executive jailed for eight years on fraud and
bribery offences).

Membership of the elite lounge is confined to about 6000
Australians including politicians from both sides, senior public
servants, TV stars and actors

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the
lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary
interests that year included Liberal MPs of the day, Philip
Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.

Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and
Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle of
Grange hermitage as a gift from Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.

Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson  told Nine:
‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is by invitation only and it is reviewed
periodically.’

Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal
politician in the country has accepted free membership of the controversial, invitation-only lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’. 

Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the
‘very, very high-end perk’ gives the airline a disproportionate level
of influence over the country’s politicians.

They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which has stirred up
the controversy. 

A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers
– in both Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of
the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to
the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.

Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits
in pecuniary interest statements. 

At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of his upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate.

What’s appropriate is transparency.’  

Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12
assistant ministers.

Entry to the country’s six opulent VIP clubs are suitably discreet, but once inside, the designer lounges offer free à
la carte fine dining, table service and a discreet
army of dedicated lounge attendants

On the Coalition side of parliament, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton,
deputy leader David Littleproud and former deputy Barnaby Joyce are also among the swathes of politicians who have disclosed
they have taken up free membership to the contentious club.

Bill Shorten is a member, Tanya Plibersek is
still a member and so is Teal MP, Zali Steggall.

Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments
Commission chairman Joe Longo and some of their deputies are members of
the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating the airline. 

Senior public servants in the club included Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis,
deputy secretaries Nadine Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and ambassador to Beijing, Scott Dewar.

Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business class flight upgrades, model Qantas
aircrafts, frequent flyer points, and tickets to sporting and entertainment events. 

Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership to the Chairman’s
Lounge is still veiled in secrecy.

Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent VIP
clubs – in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth airports – are suitably discreet.

Once inside, however, the designer lounges are noticeably luxurious, with free
à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.

Virgin Airlines has its own version of the VIP enclave, the ‘Beyond’ lounge. 

Only a handful of federal politicians have relinquished their membership to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge in the wake of the furore.

The select few to take a principled stand on the issue include South Australian senator Barbara Pocock and former Wallabies star turned ACT senator David Pocock, along with MPs Stephen Bates,
Queensland Green Elizabeth Watson-Brown, and
Monique Ryan, a Teal from Victoria.

Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting the Independent
Commission Against Corruption and a director of the Centre
for Public Integrity, has implored all politicians and policymakers to follow suit.

‘There are certain positions in life where you cannot take
Chairman’s Club membership,’ he said.

‘You’re taking public money for the job and you are supposed to represent the
public. Why not sit with them while you’re waiting for a plane?’

‘Tis the season for decadence and a touch of sparkle – and what better way to bring

Champagne is admittedly my bubbly of choice – I love both poised, elegant styles with brisk acidity and the
richer, pastry-like, gastronomic pours. But with Christmas all about sharing,

Consumer group Which? has named Tesco Finest Premier Cru Brut Champagne the best Christmas fizz,

bottles of this classy cava – and, honestly, after a few glasses, who’s noticing the difference?

‘Blanc de Blancs’ meaning ‘white of whites’ is the name for

Prices have crept up as Blanc de Blancs become all the rage, but hop over
the border to the hidden gem of Franciacorta in Lombardy, northern Italy, and you’ll find complex, vinous sips with plenty of flair, like this Fortnum’s pick.

The cost for one of London’s most pricey apartments will begin at £35million – with 600 megarich customers already securing a spot on the waiting list.

Pricing details of billionaire John Caudwell’s spectacular 1 Mayfair development have now
been revealed and only those with the deepest pockets can hope to afford one of the lavish pads.

The cheapest apartment on offer is expected to be an eye-watering £35million – around 70 times the average cost of a house in the capital.

Due to complete in Spring 2026 the scheme will easily surpass London’s previous record
breaker, the £1.3billion One Hyde Park development in Knightsbridge.

Caudwell told The Standard that there are already
more than 600 prospective buyers on a waiting list of billionaires and centi-millionaires who have expressed an interest
in making a purchase at the scheme.

There will be just 24 ‘principal residences’ in the property
including lateral apartments, penthouses and townhouses with up to five bedrooms, and five more smaller ‘pieds-à-terre’
apartments.

The size of the homes has not yet been disclosed but
the developers say even the most modest property will start with a guide
price exceeded by only a handful of mansions in London’s richest neighbourhoods. 

The average price of all 29 units – which cover 300,000 sq
ft – will be close to £70million.

The entry level price of £35million is 70 times the average London property value of around £500,000, and 130 times the national average price of £268,000 revealed in today’s Nationwide house price
survey for November.

The development’s basement is being dug down to 90ft below ground level to make
room for a health spa with a 20 metre swimming pool as well as a car park.

The designs were led by New York based architect Robert Stern and practice
RAMSA, with contractors, Mace, the construction managers and PJ Carey
responsible for the creation of the basement substructure
and superstructure.

Due to complete in Spring 2026 after a six years build
the scheme will easily surpass London’s previous record breaker, the £1.3billion One

Caudwell – who founded the mobile phones retailers Phones 4u – attended the topping out of 1 Mayfair alongside senior members of
the construction team.

The ceremony was marked by the final steel rafter, one of 79 at roof level, being put into place on the
top of the nine-storey main apartment building.

No expense has been spared on the building’s interior and it will feature a ceiling with hand-painted frescos based on Michelangelo’s Map of the Heavens in the Vatican, a reception room with a double height ceiling and
18ft high French windows overlooking the garden.

There will also be a Palace of Versailles Hall of Mirrors-style crystal callery, created from over 1,264 hand-set pieces
of cut glass, a library and a garden gallery, with
seating areas opening directly onto the central courtyard garden.

LONDON, May 11 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International’s $16 billion bid
for smaller rival Swedish Match highlights the urgency among cigarette makers to tap new and potentially less harmful alternatives
as regulation and health concerns snuff out traditional smokes.

Marlboro maker Philip Morris agreed on Wednesday
to buy Swedish Match, one of the world’s biggest makers of oral nicotine products.

These include Snus – a sucked tobacco product the firm says is less harmful than smoking – as
well as Zyn nicotine pouches, which are used the same
way and tobacco-free.

Both are niche products, but are growing, with Swedish Match’s almost
50% share of the global tobacco-free oral nicotine market putting it ahead
of both British American Tobacco and Altria Group in that category.

Thomas Russo, managing partner at Gardner Russo & Gardner which owns shares in both Philip Morris (PMI) and
Swedish Match, welcomed the tie-up as opening a «new field» for PMI’s smoke-free products, which include iQOS tobacco heating devices.

«It’s a deal that would continue industry consolidation that’s been underway for the past decade,» he said.

Russo’s U.S. investment firm has a 0.47% stake
in PMI and a 0.09% holding in Swedish Match, according
to Refinitiv data.

Tobacco companies have scrambled over the past
decade to find new markets as regulators crack down on cigarettes and more people quit
smoking due to the health risks.

Snus – a Swedish-style snuff – is a moist, smoke-free tobacco product that
is placed behind the upper lip, either loose
or in portioned sachets. The global market for snus increased from 7,000 tonnes in 2008 to nearly 10,000 tonnes
in 2019, according to data firm Euromonitor.

In 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the marketing of Swedish Match’s Snus as less harmful than cigarettes.

DEALMAKING

The possible PMI-Swedish Match deal is the latest in a string of
investments by the $900 billion-plus tobacco industry in potentially lower
risk products, including e-cigarettes and tobacco heating devices.

Euromonitor estimates the global market for smokeless tobacco, e-vapour products and heated tobacco was about $67 billion in 2021, nearly three times the size it was in 2016.

PMI Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said last year his company had spent more than $8 billion on reduced risk products since it began developing them a decade ago.

He said then that PMI would reach its 2025 target for 50%
of sales from smoke-free products by growing its
existing business, rather than acquisitions.

But buying Swedish Match, would give PMI – which was spun off from Altria in 2008
– an established U.S. market and distribution system, Bernstein analyst Callum Elliot
said.

«That said, the deal hasn’t gone through yet,» Elliot added.
«I imagine that Swedish Match is a business that could be appealing to other players within the industry, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see a counter bid from other companies, particularly Japan Tobacco Inc.»

A Japan Tobacco spokesperson said the company does not comment on rumours
or speculation.

COMPETITION

PMI, the No.3 cigarette company in 2020 after China National Tobacco Corp and British American Tobacco (BAT), has not been alone in its attempts to expand beyond combustible tobacco.

News of its move on Swedish Match sent Altria shares down about 9% on Tuesday as investors worried about a step up in competition for the U.S.

company.

In 2018, Altria bought a 35% stake in e-cigarette company Juul Labs Inc for $12.8 billion. A year later, it bought 80%
of Burger Söhne Holding AG, allowing it to distribute the Swiss company’s On! oral nicotine pouches.

Other rivals are watching with interest.

«We think a multi-category strategy in tobacco and nicotine is the right one,» BAT’s chief
marketing officer Kingsley Wheaton told Reuters on Tuesday.

BAT is the world No.2 in tobacco-free oral nicotine products behind Swedish Match.
Sales at its «new categories» division jumped 51% to 2.05 billion pounds ($2.52 billion) last year,
helped by its e-cigarettes and oral nicotine products.

The London-listed company is aiming for the division to reach revenues of 5 billion pounds, and
profitability, by 2025.

«As our business transforms, our portfolio transforms, and, so too, our competitive landscape will evolve,» Wheaton said.

While PMI is pursing Swedish Match, other rivals prefer to go it alone.

Imperial Brands is focusing on developing its own products in the heated tobacco market, particularly
in Europe, a spokesperson said.

But there is still all to play for.

«The whole next-generation product space is still very nascent – no one in the industry has yet created any next generation product which really, fully replicates the experience of a smoked cigarette or a traditional cigarette,»
the spokesperson said.

Vaping does not help teenagers give up cigarettes, according
to a controversial study.   

University of Michigan researchers analysed two decades worth of survey data
of thousands of teens, tracking quit success rates
over time. 

They say the proportion of teens who failed to kick the
habit rose in 2020, bucking the declining trend seen since the late 1990s. 

Separate analysis delving into vaping quit attempts revealed failure rates were
twice as high, compared to those for traditional cigarettes.  

But experts have poured cold water on the ‘flawed’ study, saying other, more robust, evidence shows the gadgets are helpful. 

NHS watchdogs could soon approve e-cigarettes as a smoking-cessation tool, which would doctors to prescribe the devices to smokers.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and

As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major candidate has leaned
heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights for Democrat Kamala
Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump.

In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely debated
ballot referendums.

And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost to President
Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about 10,500 votes — every ballot truly will count.

In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers
in orange T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade
voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution — and, while they’re at it, to vote for Vice President Harris.

To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to
«a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.»

She added, «Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.»

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights,
Ireland, a registered nurse, has worked in several states where abortion is
banned or severely limited.

Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences
for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses when doctors refuse to treat them.

«Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,»

As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted, particularly to young people who may be less likely
to vote, that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three
justices who tipped the Supreme Court against abortion rights.

«It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,» Ireland said.

But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.

«I do think that abortion is murder,» said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college student.

«There are cases of incest or rape» that merit exceptions, he
conceded, «but that’s very small.»

He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that
have entered the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.

«People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,» he
said.

«My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.»

So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local
law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected
of having entered the country illegally — powers normally reserved to the border
police who work for the federal government.

«I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,» Lopez said.

– Mixed impact –

The major political parties see the competing referendums
as offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at the very heart of
the two presidential campaigns.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that activists hope.

Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona,
with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.

Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both appear likely to pass.

So the abortion issue may not be «helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,» said Jenny Brian, a professor of
bioethics at Arizona State University.

Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights
and to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.

Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat
vs. Republican issue, the Republican Party includes «a broad spectrum of views on the topic,»
an issue that also raises conservatives’ concerns about «government interference,» she added.

The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not
just among Trump Republicans but also «moderates and even many Democrats,»
said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator.

The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration, specifically her
promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.

The vice president, Kavanagh said, is «running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.»

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc
is working on options to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and
rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the country following its
invasion of Ukraine.

The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia in 2021, said on Thursday
it has discontinued sale of several cigarette products and canceled all product launches for the year in Russia.

It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA sticks, heated tobacco units intended for
use with its IQOS ILUMA devices, as well as related investment of
$150 million.

Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended its planned investments and decided to scale down manufacturing
operations in the country.

Rival Imperial Brands too has started talks to transfer its Russian business to a local third party, joining BAT in exiting the sanction-hit country.
