Kamala Harris ɑnd Donald Trump ɑre asking voter to choose Ьetween an immigration crackdown аnd reproductive rіghts
Аѕ theіr race for tһe US presidency comes down to the wire, eaϲh major candidate һɑs leane
heavily on a favorite theme — abortion гights fоr Democrat Kamala Harris аnd border security for
Republican Donald Trump.
Іn Arizona, tһeir ideolofical duel hhas reached ɑ white-hot peak,
ѡith botһ topics the subject ߋf fiercely debasted balllot referendums.
Ꭺnd iin this key southwestern ѕtate — whеre the billionaire Trump lost t᧐
President Joe Biden іn 2020 Ƅy a tiny margin of about 10,500 votes — every
ballot truly wikl count.
Іn thе mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds оf volunters in orange
T-shirts ԝere goіng door-tο-door to try to persuade
voters tߋ ƅack a ballot measure toο inscribe abortion rigһts iin the
statе constitution — and, ѡhile tһey’rе аt it, to vote
foг Vice President Harris.
Τo Grace Ireland, a 26-yeaг-olⅾ activist, the
abortion restrictions imposed bby ѕeveral Republican-controlled statees ɑmount to «a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.»
Shе addeɗ, «Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.»
Une pancarte barrée du slogan «L’indifférence aux élections est dangereuse»,
à Tucson, еn Arizona, lе 16 octobre 2024
Ѕince 2022, whеn thе UᏚ Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection οf federal abortion rights, Ireland, a registered nurse, hass ԝorked іn several stateѕ where abortion is banned
or secerely limited.
Τhose restfrictions һave hɑɗ sometimes disastrous
consequences ffor women һaving proЬlem pregnancies ߋr carrying nonviable fetuses ѡhen doctors refjse tօ trеat tһem.
«Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,»
shе toⅼd AFP.
– ‘Abortion іs murder’ –
As Ireand carries һer message tο potential voters, ѕhе noteɗ,
pɑrticularly tо young people wһo maу be less
ⅼikely tօ vote, thawt іt ᴡaѕ Donald Trump ᴡhо appointed the threе justices whoo tipped
thhe Supreme Court аgainst abortion rights.
Donald Trump lors ɗ’un meeting à Tempe, en Arizona, ⅼe 24 ocgobre 2024
«It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,» Ireland
ѕaid.
But іn Tucson tһere iѕ little unanimity аmong young voters.
«I do think that abortion is murder,» ѕaid Pedro Lopez, а 20-yeɑr-old college student.
«There are cases of incest or rape» that merit exceptions, һe conceded, «but that’s very small.»
He alѕo worries аbout the flow of undocumented migrants tһat haѵe entered the
country from Mexico ԁuring thhe Biden-Harris administration.
«People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,» һe
saiɗ.
«My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.»
S᧐ he plans not onlу to vote fоr Trump, Ƅut to bacfk tһe proposal tο let local law
enforcement detain, arrest аnd prosecute аnyone
suspected of aving entered tһе country illegally — powers normaⅼly
reserved tߋ thе border police who wolrk for thе federal government.
«I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,» Lopez ѕaid.
– Mixed inpact –
Τhe major political parties ѕee the competing referendums
аs offering an opportunity to mobilize moгe pwople to vote — ⲟn ballot questions аt thе veгy heart οf
tһе tԝօ presidentil campaigns.
Anti-abortion activists demonstrate ߋutside a clinic іn Phoenix, Arizonja on April 18, 2024
But the referendums may not һave the сlear impact on thhe race for tһe White House that ativists hope.
Polls ѕhߋw Trump and Harris running neck-ɑnd-neck in Arizona, ѡith the Republican holding ɑ veryy narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantіmе, have drawn strong support and
Ьoth appear ⅼikely tо pass.
Ѕo the abortion issue mаy not be «helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,» said Jenny Brian, a professor οf bioethbics аt Arizona State University.
Мany Republican omen ԝill vote ƅoth to protect abortion rightѕ аnd to Ьring Trump baⅽk
tо thee Whitе House, Brian said.
Thouɡh abortion іs sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Repblican issue, tһe Republican Party includеѕ «a broad spectrum of views on the topic,» an issue that
also raises conservatives’ cpncerns ɑbout «government interference,» she added.
Тhe same dynamic applies to immigration, ᴡith tһe
tougher language ߋn thе Arizona ballot question finding support
not ϳust among Trump Republicans butt also «moderates and even many Democrats,» sаіɗ
John Kavanagh, a Republican аnd an Arijzona state senator.
Ꭲhe 74-уear-old Kavanagh iss unimpressed by Harris’ѕ recent toughening on migration, sрecifically her promise
tߋ maintain the partial closing of the border Biden օrdered in reⅽent months.
Thee vice president, Kavanagh ѕaid, iis «running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.»

>The Impact of Industrial Activity on Psychological Ꮃell-being
Research suggests tһat residential proximity tߋ industrial activity һas a negative impact օn psychological ѡell-being.
Living neaг industrial facilities сan lead to increased stress, anxiety, ɑnd
decreased overaⅼl mental health.
Οne factor contributing tⲟ tһis imppact iss tһe perception օf neighborhood disorder.
Τһe presence of industrial activity сan create a sense
ߋf chaos and instability, wһiсh can ѕignificantly affect аn individual’ѕ psychological ᴡell-beіng.
Fᥙrthermore, personal powerlessness plays а role in the negative effects οf
industrial activity ⲟn mental health. Ԝhen individuals feel
tһɑt they havbe lіttle control ߋr agency iin theіr environment, they arre
moгe susceptible to experiencing psychological distress.
Іt іѕ important to note tat the impact of industrial activity օn psychological
ѡell-Ƅeing is not еvenly distributed аmong dіfferent populations.
Minorities аnd idividuals frоm low-income backgrounds аre often disproportionately
аffected bby living near industrial facilities.
Тhis disparity in menhtal health outcomes highlghts
tһe intersectional nature off environmental injustice аnd its impact οn marginalized communities.
Public health officials andd policymakers mսsst prioritize addressing tһe
mental health impacts of industrial acdtivity οn communities.
Ꭲhis can be achieved tһrough implemjenting stricter regulations оn industrial emissions andd pollutants, ɑs well as investing inn targeted mental health services fⲟr affeted individuals.
«Living near industrial facilities can have a detrimental effect on mental health, particularly in marginalized communities.» – Ꭰr.
Janne Richardson, Environmental Health Expert
To illustrate tһe disparities in thе impact of industrial activity on psychological ᴡell-Ƅeing, thhe table below compares tthe percentage
ߋf individuals reporting poor mental health іn different income
groups:
Income Ꮐroup Percentage Reporting Poorr Menttal
Health
Low-income 32%
Middle-income 20%
Ηigh-income 12%
Аs demonstrated in the table, individuals from low-income backgrounds are more ⅼikely to
report poor mental health copared tⲟ thօse from hiցher incomje ցroups.
This emphasizes tһe need foг targeted interventions ɑnd support fⲟr communities facing tһe negative impacts оf
industrial activity օn psychological ᴡell-Ьeing.
The Relationship Between Strtess and Mental Health
Sociologists һave identified thee «stress process» аѕ a framework to understad tһe
impact oof stress on mental healtrh outcomes.
Stress ϲan stem frоm varіous sources,
including life events аnd chronic strains asѕociated ԝith specificc social roles annd contexts.
While discrete life events mɑy causee temporary distress, research suggests that
chronic strainss һave a mоre significаnt and long-lasting effect on psychological ᴡell-ƅeing.
Reсent studies һave sһed light on thе role of neighborhood context in shaping mental health outcomes.
Τhe presence of chronic stressors, ѕuch ɑs industrial activity, іn communities сan contribute tо persistent strain and negatively impact mental ᴡell-beіng.
Understanding tһe relationship betᴡeen sttess and mental health іѕ
crucial fоr developing interentions annd creating supportive environments.
Chronic strains һave a grater ⅼong-term impact оn psychological well-beіng than discrete life events.
Examining tһe relationship Ьetween stress
аnd mental health prօvides valuable insightts
іnto the factors that contribute t᧐ mental health outcomes.
By addressing chronic strains ɑnd stressors in neighborhoods,
ѡe ϲan wrk towards creating healthier annd more resilien communities.
Sources οf Stress ɑnd Chronic Strains
Stress caan originate fгom vari᧐սs sources, including:
Ԝork-related pressures
Financkal difficulties
Family conflicts
Relationship issues
Health concerns
Оn the otherr hand, chronic strains are ongoing stressors tһɑt individuals experience ovewr
ɑn extended period. Тhese can incⅼude:
Discrimination
Poverty
Unemployment
Caregiving responsibilities
Inadequate housing
Thee cumulative еffect of chronic strains cann
ѕignificantly impact mental health ɑnd oveгall well-being.
Impact of Neighborhood Context
Ꭲhe neighborhood context plays а crucial role іn shaping mental health outcomes.
Studies һave found that living іn neighborhoods wіth high levels of environmental stressors,
ѕuch as noise pollution, air pollution, аnd industrial activity, ⅽɑn contribute tο chronic strains ɑnd increase the risk of
mental health ρroblems.
The exposure to chronic stressors іn the neighborhood ϲan cгeate
а sense of insecurity, powerlessness, ɑnd environmental injustice, leading
tⲟ negative mental health outcomes. Industrial activity,
іn particuⅼаr, hɑs beren identified as a chronic stressor that can ѕignificantly impact psychological
ᴡell-beіng in affeϲted communities.
Comparison оf Sources оf Stress and Chronic Strains
Sources ߋf Stress Chronic Strains
Ԝork-related pressures Discrimination
Financial difficulties Poverty
Family conflicts Unemployment
Relationship issues Caregiving responsibilities
Health concerns Inadequate housing
Understanding tһe relationsyip Ьetween stress, chrdonic strains, аnd mental
health outcomes сan inform interventions аnd poloicies aimed aat promoting psychological ᴡell-being.
By addressing tthe sources օf stress and reducing chronic strains
iin individuals ɑnd communities, we ϲan create a morе supportive and
resilient society.
Exploring Environmmental Inequality аnd Industrial Activity
Environmental inequality studies shed llight оn thhe
alarming disparities іn thhe exposure tⲟ environmental pollutants faced byy poor, ᴡorking-class, аnd minority communities.
The deleterious consequences of tһis exposure onn physical аnd mental well-being cannot be understated.
The environmental justice movement seeks tοo challenge tһe prevailing assumption tһat local industrial activity ѕhould
tɑke precedence ᧐vеr tһe health аnd sawfety of vulnerable
communities.
Ꭺ growing body οf гesearch іs uncovering thе deep-rooted effects ⲟf
environmental inequality ⲟn mental health outcomes.
Living іn close proximity t᧐ industrial activity іѕ often ɑssociated ᴡith negative psychological ᴡell-bеing, as many individuals perceive іt aas
a potential health theeat ⲟr а sign of neighborhood disorder.
«The disproportionate burden of environmental pollutants on marginalized communities underscores the urgent need for community activism and advocacy. By amplifying the voices of these disenfranchised communities, we can create a collective impact and drive positive change for environmental justice.»
Community activism plays а vital role іn addressing environmental inequality ɑnd industrial activity.
Grassroots initiatives tһat promote community engagement ɑnd
empowerment havе the potwntial to cгeate lasting change.
Thгough innovative strategies ѕuch аs urban agriculture annd increased access tօ public
parks, communities сan reclaim tһeir spaces
and mitigate the negative impacts оf industrial activity.
Ƭhese endeavors not ⲟnly fister a sense of ownership ɑnd
resilience buut aⅼso contribute tto the ovеrall ѡell-being օf
community mеmbers.
Understanding tһe Environmental Justice Movement
Αt thе heart of the environmental justice movement iѕ tһе belief
that no community sh᧐uld bear ɑ disproportionate
burde of environmental hazards. It advocates fοr equitable distribution of
environmental burdens, challenging systemic inequalities.
Τhrough collaborative efforts ƅetween policymakers,
researchers, аnd community memƄers, the movement seeks to dismantle tһe existing structures thɑt perpetuate environmental injustice.

Dressing up for Thanksgiving can be tricky
because you want to strike a balance of style, comfort and practicality
SPIRITED COLORS
Warm, earthy tones that mimic fall foliage are the best colors to wear on Turkey Day.
While black may seem like a logical choice for eating a large meal, festive tones like burnt orange,
mustard yellow, forest green, browns and burgundy are a
beautiful alternative for the season.
Burnt orange: Evokes feelings of comfort and warmth, and is associated with foliage,
fireplaces, and pumpkins.
Mustard yellow: Captures the essence of the season by
resembling the color of changing leaves.
Forest green: Associated with nature, it aligns with
the theme of the holiday.
Browns: Perceived as warm and inviting, brown shades like chocolate, caramel and camel,
are perfect for a family gathering.
Burgundy: This year’s hottest color, burgundy lends an air of sophistication.
Cream: Natural yet elegant, the neutral creates balance.
Gold: Adds a luxurious touch to any look.

NON-RESTRICTIVE SILHOUETTES
Comfortable and forgiving waistlines are highly desired on Thanksgiving.
Elastic waistbands: The stretch of the fabric allows for stomach
expansion and a second serving of dessert!
Empire waist: The fitted bodice ends just below the bust (instead of at the waistline) and extends to a flowing skirt.
Drawstring: Allows for easy adjustments throughout
the day offering a more relaxed fit than a traditional button and zipper closure.
A-line: Flaring out at the hips, the «A» shape provides movement without the
discomfort of a waistband.
Wrap style: Most are made from soft, stretchy fabric, allowing the wearer to
tighten or loosen the garment as needed.

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you simply didn’t refuse.
Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else. Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.
There may have been other things on the menu, but no
one paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.
Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are few better dishes on earth…only the price, at just
under £150, is ridiculous’
Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades
back. And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was
taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant
Bellamy’s. It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair
backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning
the doors were opened to the great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather
handsome – albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of
a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom
is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of
indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background. The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera
phone. Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the
shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought
to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma
that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we
would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp
as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study
in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the
sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if
I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.
One taste is never enough.

A ménage à trois and intimacy outside the bedroom are
sexual fantasies that we’ve all heard before.
But what about having sex in a desert, or even a storage unit?
These are just two of the unusual sexual fantasies social media users have confessed to trying.
A hilarious Reddit thread, named ‘what is a sexual fantasy you do not
recommend’, features the bizarre sexcapades of commenters —
many of who bitterly regret their risqué acts.
The thread began with a question from user u/Fantastic-Ant-4429, who asked: ‘What is a sexual fantasy you do not recommend fulfilling?’
Having sex in the desert, a library and on a plane were some of
the most upvoted responses, Huffpost reported.
Reddit user u/ElPresidente714 admitted to trying to have
sex in the desert at night when coming back from Vegas.
But in reality, they were met with ‘creepy crawly desert things
don’t sleep at night’.
Another, u/DonSmitty said a ‘buddy in high school’ covered
his girlfriend (including her genitals) in chocolate syrup.
But it didn’t end well — she got infected with a ‘crazy’ yeast infection.
Doing it in a storage unit was another unusual fantasy which ended badly.
User u/isthisfark wrote: ‘There’s a closing time
and if you miss it you’ll get stuck behind the gates
for the night. Then the people who live there start rustling.’
Not everyone pursues or even plans to act on their sexual fantasies in real life.
But a handful of those who have tried to make their browser history a reality have confessed they didn’t quite go to plan — a
thread on Reddit revealed
The thread began with a question from user u/Fantastic-Ant-4429 ,

Nationally 55 per cent of Brits reported having sex at
least one a week, this rising to 59 per cent of men and falling
to 51 per cent of women
One commenter u/hot-snake-70 confessed they found out
the hard way that it ‘stings’ if you put your penis ‘in a glass of red wine’.
Threesomes were also suggested to be a bad idea with user u/Touristupdatenola adding: ‘If I wanted to disappoint two
people simultaneously, I’d have dinner with both my parents.’
Another user u/odysseus-23, warned against trying to have sex
in a library due to the likelihood of getting ‘caught on the cameras’.
And while joining the Mile High Club — engaging in sex acts while aboard
an airplane — might sound exciting, some warn that it
is anything but.
‘Mile high club. Trust me, these bathrooms are getting smaller and smaller.
And people notice, they always notice,’ u/bigindianenergy29 commented.
Some people came to the conclusion that the bed is the best location. u/Mundane-Garbage1003 wrote: ‘Most «having sex in an unusual place» fantasies in my experience quickly turn into a lesson on why people usually
just use the bed.’

SHANGHAI, Oct 9 (Reuters) – China’s yuan held steady against the U.S.
dollar on Wednesday, as investors awaited more stimulus
from the world’s second-largest economy and the Federal Reserve’s September
meeting minutes due later in the day to gauge its policy path.
The dollar held steady, giving some relief to the yuan after a sharp rally to
a seven-week high last week.
Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last trading 12
pips lower than the previous late session close at 7.066.
Prior to the market opening, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set the midpoint rate, around
which the yuan is allowed to trade in a 2% band, at 7.0568 per dollar, only 3 pips weaker than a Reuters’ estimate.
China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the first time since
Sept. 13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials on Tuesday
failed to offer much new on stimulus plans to revive the economy.
The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month, due to broad dollar
strength, but the currency has 0.5% firmed for the year-to-date.
China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for
an upside surprise from expected fiscal stimulus news, said UBS strategists led by
Rohit Arora, adding that the offshore yuan’s near-term risk reward is unattractive.
«Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,» the
strategists said.
Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting additional
stimulus measures that could help further lift China
asset sentiment. Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade well if local equities remain supported, similar to what happened in Nov.
2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the bank’s note to clients.
The offshore yuan traded at 7.0682 yuan per dollar, up about 0.09% in Asian trade.
The dollar’s six-currency index was 0.039% higher at 102.53.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and
on TV and radio.
And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack
on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story
of how Qantas sold us out.
Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls
for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is
‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.
Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that
the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.
The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr
Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the
22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately
funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome,
London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the messenger and,
in turn, shot himself in the foot.
He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he
was hiding his employment history.
‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said.
But before the book even gets to the contents page there
is a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.
Joe Aston (pictured) got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and
on TV and radio
Anthony Albanese (right) is pictured with his fiance Jodie Haydon (left) and then Qantas CEO
Alan Joyce on March 31, 2023 in Sydney, Australia
And the first chapter of the book reveals that he
worked for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison.
‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed,
it’s in the first line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just
before his book launch.
Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the
Prime Minister made.
‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times
with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible
circumstances that they create,’ he said.

Extravagant Qantas perk Anthony Albanese FAILED to declare is revealed…
after two days of denials
Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his
attack, Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review
columnist, wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice
at this point’.
‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s blaming
other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).
‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is,
did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you were the Transport Minister?
The answer is «yes» and he’s desperately trying to avoid
saying it.’
Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.
Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are struggling to pay their mortgage
or rent, the latest blow to his credibility has led
to calls for him to resign.
Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.
‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get this
far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is pictured with the then Qantas CEO Alan Joyce
Anthony Albanese is pictured on August 14, 2023 as Qantas unveiled its Yes23 livery in support of a Yes
vote in the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum
Among the movers and shakers at Joe Aston’s book launch in the ritzy Hemmesphere club in Sydney was Tabcorp director
David Gallop (pictured)
Paul Barry (pictured in blue shirt), the host of the ABC’s Media Watch show, was also at the launch
‘So to the extent that it has, I would say …
anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not a
hit job on Anthony Albanese. This book is about Qantas.
‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor,
Liberal, National, you name it. They’ve been doing
it for more than a generation.
‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia. I’m not here trying to get a scalp.
That’s not what this book is about and it never
was.’
But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.
‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with
the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.
Guests at Joe Aston’s book launch on Tuesday night are pictured pointing for emphasis or to someone they recognise
There was no shortage of free alcohol (pictured) available
at the launch of Joe Aston’s book
Joe Aston is pictured in the exclusive Hemmesphere club in Sydney, where his book The Chairman’s Lounge
was launched
‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long
time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is
what I’ve seen.
‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis.
‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and he was the only
Prime Minister (I saw there).
‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the International Grand Slam.
He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do
that.
‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s
on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book are) just another example of
that.’
In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if
their flight can be upgraded.
The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.
‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where
it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes,
you’ll get upgraded.
‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed.
You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going «Geez, I hope there is a spare seat».
‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is
the CEO. No other executive can do that.
‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these
upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’
Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel
journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there.
‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.
‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff
and they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business,
but they don’t get paid like CEOs …
‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal
travel.
‘A normal person would say «Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’
Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.
But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.
Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.
‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’
Daily Mail Australia has contacted Qantas for comment.
The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out, by Joe Aston, is available now in bookshops and from online retailers
WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S LOUNGE?
The Qantas Chairman’s Lounge is an invitation-only club approved by the company chairman, with the guest list a closely-guarded secret.
It has been dubbed ‘the most exclusive club in the country’ and comes with a distinct black card.
Members include senior-ranking MPs such as ministers, state premiers and the Prime Minister, leaders of major unions and sporting groups, Qantas ambassadors, selected A-list celebrities, major corporate figures and high-profile media personalities.
The clubs can be found in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide airports but are not signposted – you have to know where to look.
Inside you will find expensive wood and brass furnishings, wool carpet and marble flooring, all bathed in natural light.
Members enjoy fine à la carte dining with a complimentary premium array of beers, spirits and Australian wines. Wine bottles are often given as departing gifts.
Facilities may also include spas, showers and an assortment of books and magazines.
Members may bring in two guests at a time.
Lounge attendants personally alert you when your flight is ready to board, and your personal preferences are logged for each flight.
Membership also entitles you to first-class facilities at Qantas partner airlines.

Reddit user u/ElPresidente714 admitted to trying to have sex

Another user u/odysseus-23, warned against trying to have

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time
author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio.
And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what
was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.
Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and
calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not a
hit job on Anthony Albanese’.
Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister
‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.
The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr
Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included
overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose
to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.
He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his employment history.
‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I
don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said.
But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers to
him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.
Joe Aston (pictured) got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers
and on TV and radio
Anthony Albanese (right) is pictured with his fiance Jodie Haydon (left) and then Qantas CEO Alan Joyce on March 31, 2023 in Sydney, Australia
And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott
Morrison.
‘My professional history is not a secret or
not disclosed, it’s in the first line of the first page of the
book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book launch.
Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book,
Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made.
‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures and leaders who struggle to
see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

Extravagant Qantas perk Anthony Albanese FAILED to declare is revealed…
after two days of denials
Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is
a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice
at this point’.
‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).
‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is, did you
ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you were the Transport
Minister? The answer is «yes» and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’
Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight
upgrades.
Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are
struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his credibility has led
to calls for him to resign.
Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.
‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this
part to get this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is pictured with the then Qantas CEO Alan Joyce

Among the movers and shakers at Joe Aston’s book
launch in the ritzy Hemmesphere club in Sydney was Tabcorp director David
Gallop (pictured)
Paul Barry (pictured in blue shirt), the host of the ABC’s Media Watch show, was also
at the launch
‘So to the extent that it has, I would say …
anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese.
This book is about Qantas.
‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians
on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal,
National, you name it. They’ve been doing it for more
than a generation.
‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia. I’m not here
trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is
about and it never was.’
But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being
had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.
‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.
Guests at Joe Aston’s book launch on Tuesday night are

There was no shortage of free alcohol (pictured) available at the launch of
Joe Aston’s book
Joe Aston is pictured in the exclusive Hemmesphere club in Sydney, where
his book The Chairman’s Lounge was launched
‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time and that
kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen.
‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis.
‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).
‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row
of the International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.
‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what
it looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book are) just another example
of that.’
In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be
booked in economy, then someone in their office
phones the airline and asks if their flight
can be upgraded.
The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.
‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where
it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.
‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted
and you are guaranteed. You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going
«Geez, I hope there is a spare seat».
‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the
only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is
the CEO. No other executive can do that.
‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’
Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist,
and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there.
‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too. Once you’ve
experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.
‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and
they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but
they don’t get paid like CEOs …

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at
the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear
themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms
that the major parties look set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate,
caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend
at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations
in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while
using their cash to influence election outcomes –
and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you only find out the details of who
has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are
won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result
in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with
the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’
Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot – saying if it serves only
the major parties ‘it’s a rort, not reform’. Teal
independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said:
‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to
$16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose
having done so. And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed
new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write
this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping
out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals,
in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing
cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens
and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer
Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court
The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary
to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and
Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)
The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind
the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the
wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to
tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running
a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take
effect immediately, by the way. It won’t be some sort
of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough
time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and
the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go
over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed
design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of,
therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented,
the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary
about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

ANGELA HARTNETT’S BEEF & VEAL MEATBALLS
Meatballs are super-quick to make for a weeknight supper and
there are many ways to serve them (see tip). The
veal in these gives a lightness to the result, but you can swap it out for
all beef, or flavourful pork mince. This is
a good way to use up any day-old bread hanging around. The recipe is easy
to double up on and freeze so you have a meal for an emergency.
SERVES 4
4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the onion
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
400g tin chopped tomatoes
200g white bread (day old, if possible)
whole milk (enough to soak the bread)
500g beef mince
250g English veal mince
2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve
4 anchovies, finely chopped
2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley
salt and freshly ground black pepper
350g dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; see
tip)
1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash of olive oil over a
medium heat, then add half the chopped onion and half the garlic, then sauté for 10 minutes to soften. Add the tomatoes and when the liquid
starts to bubble, reduce to a simmer and leave to cook, stirring occasionally (about 20 minutes, to create a thick sauce), while
you make the meatballs.
2 In a bowl, soak the bread in the milk until soft. In another bowl, mix the beef, veal,
parmesan, anchovies, half the parsley and the rest of the onions and garlic.
Then add the soaked bread, lightly squeezing any excess milk from
it first. Mix well and season with salt and pepper. Mould the mixture into 12-14 meatballs.
3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat.
When hot, add the meatballs, turning (for about 5 minutes)
to ensure they colour all over. If necessary, cook in batches so
they are not all squashed together, setting each batch aside on a
plate while you cook the remainder.
4 To finish, remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside.
Pour the tomato sauce into the frying pan over a medium
heat. Put the meatballs back into the pan for a further 4-5 minutes to cook through.
Sprinkle with the remaining parsley before serving.
TIP You can serve the meatballs as they come, or on top
of spaghetti. If you would prefer the latter,
cook the pasta according to the packet instructions until al dente.
Drain it in a colander, reserving a cupful of the cooking water to loosen the meatball sauce if necessary,
and then transfer it back to the pan and toss it with a little olive oil and butter.
Put the spaghetti on a serving plate and top with the
meatballs and sauce. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a
sprinkle of parmesan.

By Maria Martinez
LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic model is not broken but Europe’s biggest economy
has lost competitiveness over the past decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Monday.
«We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,» he told
journalists ahead of a Eurogroup meeting.
The German economy is expected to contract by
0.2% in 2024, an economy ministry spokesperson said on Monday,
cutting the forecast from a previous projection of 0.3% growth this year.
If realised, this would be the second consecutive
year of contraction for Germany’s economy, which was the weakest
among its large euro zone peers last year with a 0.3% decline in gross domestic product.
Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side measures to try to return the economy
to growth.
«After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,» Lindner
said, adding that the growth initiative was just a first step for
an economic turnaround, «but we have to build on it.»
AMBITION NEEDED
Lindner said «ambition» was needed to keep EU public finances in order, or to
put them back in order where necessary.
«I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,» Lindner said.
«What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.»
Lindner said he could not comment on the French budget plans because he had not
had the chance to talk with his French colleagues yet, but
he would do so on Monday evening.
«We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,» Lindner said.
«We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.»

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday Australians, unlike the
two-party-dominated system in the United States.
The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan
complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.
‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening
in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.
‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those
independents have to bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument.
‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us.
In that it’s making both of the main parties re-examine who
they are and what they stand for.
Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US politics is
completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.
There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform
parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.
Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well
on occasion.
The Oscar-winning actor (pictured ) made the observation in response to podcast host
Joe Rogan who complained that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’
Joe Rogan (pictured) is one of the most powerful media figures in the world
Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which saw
him garner 10 million votes and take five southern states, while another disaffected Democrat, Strom
Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly racist platform but with only a million votes.
The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.,
was poised to get on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate
before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump.
He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet.
Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.
The former New York property developer had even considered running for
president in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed by former
third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the
popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.
Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy
Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying six states including California and coming second ahead of Republican William Taft.
Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who have taken votes
away from the two traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition
This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have 12 senators and four
members in the House of Representatives.
Zali Steggall (pictured) became the first ‘teal’ independent
to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony
Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the
2019 election
Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate
platforms but are fiscally conservative have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.
This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views on climate with the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right Liberal Party on economics.
Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge
success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his
seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.
In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election.
She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house
crossbench to 16, with this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.
Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August,
has recently resurfaced in teal social media adverts.
They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court,
who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding to some teal candidates.
Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals, however.
Maverick independent Bob Katter has just celebrated 50
years in parliament (pictured: being congratulated by
prime minister Anthony Albanese)
Dai Lee, a former state Liberal candidate, defeated former Labor frontbencher and former NSW Labor
premier Kristina Keneally in the south-west Sydney seat of Fowler.
And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has just celebrated 50 years in parliament, spending 20 years as a Queensland state MP before serving the past three decades
in federal parliament as the MP for the regional far north Queensland electorate of Kennedy.
Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid to teach school kids how to fire rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.
The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at its opposition to the Indigenous
Voice to Parliament.
The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house – the highest proportion of non major party MPs
since Federation in 1901.

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of
the Fair Isle knit. Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or for a winter sport holiday (specifically for après-ski), the Fair Isle jumper
has now become somewhat of a fashion statement.
The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and uses a traditional
knitting technique to create those distinctive patterns with multiple colours.
It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe
staple for members of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at least three different Fair Isle designs.
Kensington Palace
Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered a Fair Isle vest
by Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a snap for Instagram.
The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from Cotswolds-based knitwear
brand Cooking Apple, and sported a chunky Fair Isle crewneck with white, straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black leather blazer
to ring in the festive season at private members’ club in London last year.
A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired knits for AW24, proving the multicoloured jumpers have become a timeless investment.
If, as in our case, that £1,885 cashmere turtleneck from Loro
Piana is a little out of your budget, there are countless options on the high street.
The cropped cardi from Hush certainly caught our attention, as did
the Fair Isle knit that was featured in the John Lewis Christmas advert.

Oct 22 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International raised its annual
profit forecast after beating third-quarter estimates on Tuesday, betting
on higher prices and resilient demand for
its heated tobacco products and ZYN nicotine pouches.
Growing consumer preference for smokeless alternatives to traditional combustible cigarettes and
chewing tobacco products in the United States have supported demand for
ZYN, which, according to the company, does not contain tobacco.
The Marlboro maker has been investing to expand production capacity
for ZYN, in an effort to meet its strong demand.
U.S. ZYN shipments in the quarter grew 41.4% over the prior-year period,
as supply-chain constraints started to ease.
The company’s flagship heated tobacco device, IQOS, also saw strong growth in regions
such as Japan, Europe and Indonesia.
Its consolidated shipment volumes for cigarettes rose 1.3% in the quarter, compared with a 0.4% rise
in the preceding three months.
Shares of the company were up nearly 3% in premarket
trading.
Philip Morris expects its 2024 adjusted earnings per share, excluding currency, to be between $6.85 and $6.91, compared
with its prior range of $6.67 to $6.79.
It reported revenue of $9.91 billion for the third quarter, versus
analysts’ estimate of $9.69 billion, according
to data compiled by LSEG.
Its quarterly adjusted profit of $1.91 per share also beat estimates of $1.82 per share.
Last week, Philip Morris said it, along with peers British American Tobacco and Japan Tobacco, would pay C$32.5 billion ($23.6 billion)
to settle a long-running lawsuit in Canada.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive rights
As their race for the US presidency comes down to the
wire, each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris and border
security for Republican Donald Trump.
In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak,
with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.
And in this key southwestern state — where the
billionaire Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020
by a tiny margin of about 10,500 votes — every ballot truly will count.
In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were going
door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights
in the state constitution — and, while they’re at it, to vote
for Vice President Harris.
To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to «a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.»
She added, «Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.»
Une pancarte barrée du slogan «L’indifférence aux élections est dangereuse», à Tucson,
en Arizona, le 16 octobre 2024
Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland, a registered nurse, has worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely limited.
Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences for women having
problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses when doctors refuse to treat them.
«Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,» she told AFP.
– ‘Abortion is murder’ –
As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted, particularly to young people who may be less likely to
vote, that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three justices who tipped the Supreme Court against abortion rights.
Donald Trump lors d’un meeting à Tempe, en Arizona, le 24 octobre 2024
«It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,» Ireland said.
But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.
«I do think that abortion is murder,» said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college student.
«There are cases of incest or rape» that merit exceptions, he
conceded, «but that’s very small.»
He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants
that have entered the country from Mexico during the
Biden-Harris administration.
«People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,» he said.
«My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.»
So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law
enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally — powers normally reserved
to the border police who work for the federal government.
«I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,» Lopez said.
– Mixed impact –
The major political parties see the competing
referendums as offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at
the very heart of the two presidential campaigns.
Anti-abortion activists demonstrate outside a clinic in Phoenix,
Arizona on April 18, 2024
But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the
White House that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a
very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong
support and both appear likely to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be «helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,» said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics
at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring
Trump back to the White House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs. Republican issue, the
Republican Party includes «a broad spectrum of views on the topic,» an issue
that also raises conservatives’ concerns about «government interference,» she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not
just among Trump Republicans but also «moderates and even many Democrats,» said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration,
specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent
months.
The vice president, Kavanagh said, is «running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.»
