An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you simply
didn’t refuse. Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked
potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap. There may have
been other things on the menu, but no one paid them much heed.
This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.

And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews,
was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.

Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were
opened to the great unwashed.

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of
a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up
by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.

The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent
beauty, clad in diaphanous couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters
hover in the shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far
better than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills
with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that
had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’,
we would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with
butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black
splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day
if I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem
with caviar. One taste is never enough.

Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of work trips last year despite it not always

While politicians and their staffers are required to book the cheapest flight, it also has to be the most efficient,

MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like

and flight upgrades.

‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of Qantas in securing bookings by parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial

‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’

Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a
review of flight bookings by government officials which will be conducted by the Department of
Finance this year, despite there being just two months left of 2024.

LONDON, March 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International
is preparing to launch its flagship heated tobacco device IQOS in Austin,
Texas, indicating it will be the first testing ground for its
U.S. entry, job adverts on LinkedIn show.

IQOS, the top selling heated tobacco device globally,
sits at the core of the world’s biggest tobacco company’s efforts to transform its image from a purveyor of cigarettes to a driving force behind the switch to
healthier options.

Investors are waiting to see if Philip Morris (PMI) can create a
market for heated tobacco in the United States, where vaping currently dominates.

The country offers PMI a substantial base of new users and, potentially, a hefty new income stream that could
prove transformative as it tries to generate an increasing proportion of revenue
from products other than cigarettes.

PMI spent the vast majority of $10.7 billion of expenditure on smoking alternatives between 2008 and 2022 on IQOS’
development.

The Marlboro maker had said it planned to launch the device in four cities
in two U.S. states starting with one city in the second quarter, ahead of
a broader roll-out likely in 2025. However it had not released further details, including around
which cities or states it is targeting.

Job adverts posted on LinkedIn reveal that the company is laying the groundwork for an IQOS launch in Austin,
Texas. The adverts, posted this month, include positions as field sales representatives, territory managers and retail sales advisors.

Whether or not IQOS takes off in the United States will be significant
given the market’s size. Euromonitor estimates total U.S.
nicotine sales, excluding nicotine replacement therapies, were worth some $143.6 billion in 2022.

While cigarettes accounted for the vast majority of that, Euromonitor forecasts their
value will shrink by 30% by 2027. The value of vapes, heated tobacco products and other alternatives will rise by 36% over the same period, it says.

TESTING GROUND

Products like IQOS work by heating up sticks of ground up tobacco without burning them in an attempt to avoid the harmful chemicals
released via combustion.

Heated tobacco products have so far been largely
absent from the U.S. market aside from limited sales of IQOS managed
by PMI’s former parent, Altria, and another product offered
on a limited scale by British American Tobacco.

PMI paid Altria $2.7 billion for the rights to market IQOS in the United States in 2022.
BAT has subsequently cast doubt on the category’s potential in the country, where vaping and other alternatives are already well established.

Texas offers an interesting trial market given its broad demographics, ranging from super rural to highly urban, said Brett Cooper, managing partner and analyst at Consumer Edge,
an equity research firm. He added that diverse cities like
Austin, Houston and Dallas provide access to a wide range of consumer groups.

Tobacco taxes in the state are also relatively low, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
data. The excise tax rate on a pack of cigarettes in Texas stood at $1.41 in September 2023, the data shows
– far higher than the 17 cents in Missouri but also well below the more than $5 per pack in New York.

Texas introduced new laws around e-cigarettes in January, restricting devices that resemble food products like candy or fruit
juice, or that include a symbol or celebrity image targeted at
minors or depict cartoon-like fictional characters.

PMI bets IQOS can win a 10% share of U.S. tobacco and heated tobacco unit volume by
around 2030.

Ahead of IQOS’ launch, the company has also been building out its lobbying firepower across the United States.
The company wants two thirds of its revenue to come from «smoke-free»

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’

October 4, but it only raked in $20 million at the domestic box office, per The Hollywood Reporter. 

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar
for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel
(Harley Quinn). 

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating
on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a comic book movie. 

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.

Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around $70
million – but the number has since drastically dropped. 

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first
released in theaters – and eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the global box office. 

The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips – had a budget of
between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget increased
for Folie À Deux to around $200 million. 

The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the 76th Venice International Film Festival. 

Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker
(Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score. 

The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month in September, where it
earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.   

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience
score of 31% and a critic score of 32%

However, audiences have since taken to X after the movie released in theaters on Friday – and shared their opinions on the sequel,
which features musical sequences.

The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is
best remembered as one of the most subversive and original
films of the last decade, while its hugely anticipated sequel is just as bleak
and formally daring as its predecessor’.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two stars
but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.

Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to bump the ratings
up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea what to do with
her. 

Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw
claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips discussed whether he would be interested in making a third Joker film or
a movie centered around Gaga’s character; Phillips, Gaga and
Phoenix seen in September in L.A.

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International
Inc is working on options to exit the Russian market, citing a
complex and rapidly changing regulatory and
operating environment in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.

The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of several cigarette
products and canceled all product launches for the year in Russia.

It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA sticks, heated tobacco units intended for use
with its IQOS ILUMA devices, as well as related investment of $150 million.

Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended its planned investments
and decided to scale down manufacturing operations in the country.

will begin at £35million – with 600 megarich customers already securing a spot on the waiting list.

Pricing details of billionaire John Caudwell’s spectacular 1 Mayfair development have now been revealed
and only those with the deepest pockets can hope to afford one of the lavish pads.

The cheapest apartment on offer is expected to
be an eye-watering £35million – around 70 times the average cost of
a house in the capital.

Due to complete in Spring 2026 the scheme will easily surpass London’s previous record breaker,
the £1.3billion One Hyde Park development in Knightsbridge.

Caudwell told The Standard that there are already more
than 600 prospective buyers on a waiting list of billionaires and centi-millionaires who have expressed an interest in making a purchase at the scheme.

There will be just 24 ‘principal residences’ in the property including lateral apartments, penthouses and townhouses with up to five bedrooms, and five more smaller ‘pieds-à-terre’ apartments.

The size of the homes has not yet been disclosed but the
developers say even the most modest property will start
with a guide price exceeded by only a handful of mansions in London’s richest neighbourhoods.

300,000 sq ft – will be close to £70million.

The entry level price of £35million is 70 times the average London property value of around £500,000, and
130 times the national average price of £268,000 revealed in today’s
Nationwide house price survey for November.

The development’s basement is being dug down to 90ft below ground
level to make room for a health spa with a 20 metre swimming pool as well as a car park.

The designs were led by New York based architect Robert Stern and practice RAMSA, with
contractors, Mace, the construction managers and PJ Carey
responsible for the creation of the basement substructure and superstructure.

Caudwell – who founded the mobile phones retailers Phones 4u – attended the topping out of 1 Mayfair alongside senior members of the construction team.

The ceremony was marked by the final steel rafter,
one of 79 at roof level, being put into place on the top of the nine-storey main apartment
building.

No expense has been spared on the building’s interior and it will feature
a ceiling with hand-painted frescos based on Michelangelo’s Map of the
Heavens in the Vatican, a reception room with a double height ceiling and 18ft high French
windows overlooking the garden.

There will also be a Palace of Versailles Hall of Mirrors-style crystal callery, created from over 1,264 hand-set pieces of cut glass, a library and a garden gallery, with seating areas opening directly onto the
central courtyard garden.
