Joker: Folie À Deux director Todd Phillips ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during making of the
$200million flop film, a new report has claimed.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film – stars
Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures – but was slammed by
critics and failed to ignite at the box office.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical
and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with Phillips’
process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of
the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty
last month.

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does
not include a DC Studios logo.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a critic score
of 32%

the end of the Joker sequel. while Phillips declined to comment to the
publication. 

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say
no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran –
who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio
but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he
told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of
a Warner Bros. movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips  shortly after WarnerMedia and
Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a
lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per
cent less.

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back
– with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore
in comic book movie history as the film bombed at the box office on opening night. 

It has only made $114million worldwide against its $200million budget. 

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized
as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October 4, but
it only raked in $20 million at the domestic box office,
per The Hollywood Reporter. 

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar for
his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn). 

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a comic book movie. 

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of
31% and a critic score of 32%. 

The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the domestic box office during the entirety of opening weekend, per The
Hollywood Reporter. 

Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around $70
million – but the number has since drastically dropped. 

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters – and eventually landed a little
over $1 billion in the global box office. 

The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips –
had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However,
the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200 million. 

The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics
and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during
the 76th Venice International Film Festival. 

Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score. 

The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month
in September, where it earned a 12-minute standing
ovation, per Deadline.

last decade, while its hugely anticipated
sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two
stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.

Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea what to do with her. 

Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie
proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

Channel 4 have commissioned popular show Chateau DIY and its festive spin-off, Chateau DIY at Christmas,
for two more years.

The poplar daytime series follows families’ journeys in purchasing and restoring various chateaux across France.

While the main show historically had 30 hour-long episodes per season, the
broadcaster has increased the order to 45 episodes each series
over the next two years.

The show’s streaming figures have increased, averaging well
over the 480,000 viewership channel benchmark, at 622,
000.

Joff Hatfield-Powell, who has helmed Chateau DIY since its launch said: ‘Chateau DIY is a well-loved franchise that continues to deliver on linear and streaming
so I am delighted with Channel 4’s increased
commitment for more’.

of associated series Escape to the Chateau.

However, the hosts of the show Dick and Angel Strawbridge were dropped by
Channel 4 three years ago, after being engulfed in a bullying scandal.

The couple found fame renovating their home over nine series of Escape to the Chateau, alongside their
two children.

But it was revealed in May 2023 that Channel 4 had cut ties with
them following an independent investigation into their conduct.

The TV channel confirmed they would no longer
work with the pair on any new productions ‘following a
review’ after they were branded ‘spiky and volatile’.

A leaked recording revealed Angel branding a producer a ‘F***ed up
little c**t’.

In June, she spoke out for the first time defending herself over the foul-mouthed rant as she explained she fell into a pre-laid trap.

so disrespectful in our house, he was so upsetting to me, my family,
and I stand by what I did.

‘If I was to apologise and say «I’m sorry for using bad language and chucking you out» I would just be disingenuous to me.’

She added: ‘Would I like to erase that? Yeah, I’d love to.
But I would also like to erase what he was doing because
my rage just didn’t pop out of nowhere.

‘It grew over time and it was provoked and therefore I’m not
ashamed of what happened in the end, I just wish it hadn’t happened.’

Speaking about the backlash that followed her rant, Angel previously said:
‘The actual incident, it actually happened a long time ago – so it happened about six years ago.

‘We had so many amazing people filming Escape to the Chateau, but in this particular quite small time frame,
we had someone that wasn’t particularly very nice.

‘His behaviour was completely unacceptable, but it didn’t just happen in one little moment, it happened over lots of different
occasions.

‘It was a high point towards the end of filming a series.

We set a lot of stories in parallel activity. We were particularly
busy, and I think that’s why we just didn’t have
the head space to address his behaviour.

Recalling his behaviour she explained: ‘He was not very nice, he was doing these
weird pictures of Dick killing animals and posting them on his Instagram.
He was so horrible with the children.

‘There was this one incident, and I actually truly believe
that because he knew he was caught, I think in my heart
that is why he set up this filming.

‘Because the way that he was acting was how he’d never acted with me before.
You don’t accidentally film someone when you’re not filming.
Completely happened secretively and on purpose.

‘He broke all of the kids’ fishing rods and the next day I was upstairs and he came up in a really very out of
character way for him and was really in my face, in a really angry
like he’d lost it kind of way.

‘I’ve not listened back, it makes me feel a little
bit sick if I do. But obviously all of my friends have,
and they’re like «I can hear you» – he actually took out
what he said – «I can here you gradually getting more angry, more angry, more angry».

‘And then I just say like «get out of my f***ing house».
I can’t even remember what I said. I think I said a really bad
word beginning with c, I think that’s how pissed off I must
have been.’

Angel said the fallout after the incident felt really
‘disproportionate’, adding: ‘There was so much noise going on on one side.

way. If I’d just taken a breath two weeks beforehand and thought to myself «we need to get him out and get a new person in»,
then I think it would have played out differently.

‘We don’t teach our children to use bad language, but when you’re pushed that far and are seeing red,
it’s kind of hard. 

‘I don’t want to say I regret using it. I stand proud for just defending myself at that moment
against his behaviour. I probably wish that
I hadn’t said the c-word. I don’t even like that word.’

‘We made the decision just not to get involved in any of the conversations.’ .

The partner of the ex-CEO of the Abercrombie and Fitch clothing line
pleaded not guilty Tuesday in US federal court to charges of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution and was released on $10 million bond.

Briton Matthew Smith, the ex-CEO Mike Jeffries and their fixer James Jacobson allegedly used
a «casting couch» ploy to groom aspiring male models to attend sex parties at which victims were plied with alcohol and drugs.

After his arrest in October in Florida with Jeffries, Smith was held
in custody in New York. Smith appeared in court Tuesday
in Central Islip on Long Island, to the east of New York City.

Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond put up by Jeffries
and his family, said a statement from the US attorney’s office for the eastern district of New York.

An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what
appeared to be a large electronic surveillance bracelet attached
to his ankle.

Another hearing is scheduled for December 10 for Smith,
Jeffries and Jacobson.

Jeffries, 80, was released on a $10 million bond in late October.

Jeffries, who served as CEO of Abercrombie and Fitch from 1992 to 2014,
is accused of creating and maintaining a ring that recruited young men to
have sex with him and Smith.

Prosecutors allege that between December 2008 and March 2015 Jeffries,
Smith and Jacobson used a combination of «force, fraud and coercion» to
traffic men in a sprawling prostitution enterprise.

Charging documents detail 15 anonymous victims, but prosecutors
suggest the scale was probably much larger and have appealed for witnesses and victims to come
forward.

Prosecutors say young men were taken to the
New York home of Jeffries and Smith and to hotels in Britain, France, Italy, Morocco to have sex with them.

Jeffries faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted.

Jacobson also pleaded not guilty to the same charges as the other defendants and was
released on half a million dollars bond in October.

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the
heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?

In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments
against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set to come together to support.

The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate,
caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the
equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.

The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing
the transparency of who makes political donations in the first place.

So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and
the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.

The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.

At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you only find out the
details of who has given what to whom many months later, well
after elections are won and lost.

In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by
the wealthy.

Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned
the reform would ‘not stop the rot’ 

Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot – saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort, not reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said: ‘What
seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.

Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the
proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’. 

They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the
opposition.

I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.

Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping
out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or
the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties
closer to accountability.

More fool me.

The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and is opposed
by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest
too much on this issue.

Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive
Palmer

Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes
à Court

The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator
Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)

The major parties have long complained about
the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals. 

And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past,
contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.

Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail
dark art of political donations.

The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.

It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.

They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone
enough time to absorb and understand the changes before
preparing for them.

Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I
imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth
comb.

As they should – because it certainly isn’t
beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed
design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable
of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the
years to come.

But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition,
to what is being advocated for.

They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could
be incorporated in the package.

To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics
to ‘clean things up’.

There are no diameters for squares; let us just make that clear.
Diameter only applies for circles (Line that goes through centre of circle and touches edges).
However, diameters in squares would be simply length(but went through centre).

Therefore it could be anywhere between 15-~21.2132. (Straight length/width or diagonal or anywhere else.)

alphabet on birth certificates. 

If rejected, Grimes and Musk can submit another name or appeal.

Five years have passed since the triumphant opening
of Joker at the Venice Film Festival. I still vividly remember reeling out of a morning screening, dazzled less by the
unforgiving glare of the Venetian sun than by the movie we’d just been shown.

Last night, here in Venice, came the world premiere of the sequel, Joker: Folie a Deux
The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once
more in the title role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose
we must call the love interest, although that would undervalue her
wonderful performance.

The film is audaciously different in style from the original, not quite as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all
the same. 

It begins with a kind of sinister jauntiness with a
Joker animation in the style of a Tom & Jerry cartoon, to show that
since the events of the first movie, Arthur Fleck along with his murderous alter
ego has become a cultural phenomenon in Gotham City. There has
even been a TV movie about him.

Joaquin Phoenix is once more in the title role, this time joined by
Lady Gaga as what I suppose we must call the love interest, although that
would undervalue her wonderful performance

The film is audaciously different in style from the original,
not quite as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the same

Joker: Folie a Deux is released on October 4, 2024 and will premiere at the
81st annual Venice Film Festival

But Arthur is behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be judged sane enough to
stand trial for murder, and in the meantime enjoying his celebrity status both with fellow prisoners and even the
warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Lady Gaga plays Lee, a fellow inmate on her way,
we suppose, to becoming Joker’s girlfriend Harley Quinn.

The pair hit it off at a music therapy class, and are soon mutually smitten,
but Lee makes it clear that she loves the dangerously charismatic Joker, ‘clown prince of crime’, not the gloomily introspective Arthur. 

Indeed, identity confusion is the theme of this film, which delves even deeper than the original into schizophrenia and other types of mental illness.

It’s been said that Folie a Deux is a musical. It’s not, but music looms large
as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s burgeoning love for one
another. It is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953 classic The Band Wagon that Lee, who claims
to have been imprisoned for arson, sets fire to their prison wing.

The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to escape, yet Phillips and his co-writer Scott Silver toy with our expectations throughout; each time we anticipate which way the narrative is going to go, it confounds us by wheeling off in another direction. 

The music is a constant, though, with Lady Gaga giving her interpretation of lovely old
Burt Bacharach and even Motown numbers, and Phoenix more than holding his own. There are also a
couple of swooning dance routines that make Arthur and Lee look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in La La Land.

Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance with a smug interviewer played by Steve Coogan, it is time for the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by
the subject of multiple personality disorder. 

Is Arthur the defendant accused of five murders, or is it Joker?
His kindly lawyer (Catherine Keener) wants to make clear it is Arthur;
Lee just as urgently wants him to identify as Joker.

For those cinema-goers who consider Joker: Folie a Deux to be just another unnecessary Batman spin-off,
you should maybe think again 

All this is compellingly directed by Phillips, and superbly acted by Phoenix especially, in a role
for which he seems custom-made, but by Gaga too. We’ve known since A Star
is Born in 2018 that she can act, but she really is terrific in a bad-girl role.
They’d have loved her at St Trinians. 

As for those cinema-goers who consider Joker: Folie a Deux to
be just another unnecessary Batman spin-off, you should maybe think
again. 

This might not quite be in the top rank of films about
mental illness, alongside all-time greats such as
Psycho and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. But it’s not too far off.
