Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social media after its release
last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot,
but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it
out to be. I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel,
and fully committed to the storytelling they presented. It never

Most critics have said Todd failed to use Gaga correctly in the movie and claimed she was only bought in for the musical aspect of it.
While the majority of critics say Joker: Folie À Deux didn’t live
up to expectations, others have dubbed the movie ‘bold’ and
‘brilliant.’
Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said it lacked any
thrill.
The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is best remembered as one of the most subversive and original films of the
last decade, while its hugely anticipated
sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.
Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two
stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.
Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea what to do with her.
Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie
proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order to execute all the hostages who remain in Gaza if he died, a
top Israeli negotiator has claimed.
Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered him by chance, sending a drone to kill the terror leader.
Gershon Baskin, the Israeli negotiator who oversaw Sinwar’s 2011 release from an Israeli prison, along with 1,026 Palestinian prisoners, in exchange
for the return of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shilat, said that his death
was a ‘moment of either opportunity or a moment of doom.’
‘A moment of doom because there are rumours that Sinwar instructed people holding hostages that, should he be killed,

At the time of Sinwar’s death, just over 100 hostages remained in Gaza, with

We set a lot of stories in parallel activity. We were particularly
busy, and I think that’s why we just didn’t have
the head space to address his behaviour.
Recalling his behaviour she explained: ‘He was not very nice, he was doing these
weird pictures of Dick killing animals and posting them on his Instagram.
He was so horrible with the children.
‘There was this one incident, and I actually truly believe
that because he knew he was caught, I think in my heart
that is why he set up this filming.
‘Because the way that he was acting was how he’d never acted with me before.
You don’t accidentally film someone when you’re not filming.

‘He broke all of the kids’ fishing rods and the next day I was upstairs and he came up in a really very out of
character way for him and was really in my face, in a really angry
like he’d lost it kind of way.

and they’re like «I can hear you» – he actually took out
what he said – «I can here you gradually getting more angry, more angry, more angry».
‘And then I just say like «get out of my f***ing house».

have been.’

A Channel 4 spokeswoman told MailOnline: ‘Following a
review, we have taken the decision not to work with Dick
and Angel on any new productions in the future.’
A spokesperson for Two Rivers added: ‘We can confirm that we will
no longer work with Dick and Angel and cannot comment further at the moment.’
Sources close to the couple told MailOnline that their behaviour on set was nothing like their ‘gorgeous’ on screen personas.
A source said: ‘Dick and Angel come across on screen as the most gorgeous and lovely couple, literally like butter wouldn’t melt, but they’re not like that off screen.
‘It’s a full-on show, production is with them at the chateau for weeks so
they can’t hide their real characters – they can’t turn it on for
two hours of recording and then not go back to
their real persona.
‘They’re just spiky and volatile people and,
as you can imagine, that’s a nightmare to work with.’
Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is
at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set
to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps
on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to
prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what
any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of
who makes political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes
– and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the
speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to
be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get
made – but you only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency
and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under
the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling
them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that
Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important
transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the
virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being
put forward by Labor and is opposed by a
growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply,
the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.

The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à
Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from
the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations
rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile from
reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take
effect immediately, by the way. It won’t be some sort
of quick-paced power play before the next
election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the
changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to
go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the
proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore
disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench
should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being
advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that
could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

ANGELA HARTNETT’S BEEF & VEAL MEATBALLS
Meatballs are super-quick to make for a weeknight supper and there are many ways to serve them (see tip).
The veal in these gives a lightness to the result, but you
can swap it out for all beef, or flavourful pork mince.
This is a good way to use up any day-old bread hanging around.
The recipe is easy to double up on and freeze so you have a meal for an emergency.
SERVES 4
4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the onion
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
400g tin chopped tomatoes
200g white bread (day old, if possible)
whole milk (enough to soak the bread)
500g beef mince
250g English veal mince
2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve
4 anchovies, finely chopped
2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley
salt and freshly ground black pepper
350g dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; see tip)
1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash of olive oil over a medium heat, then add half
the chopped onion and half the garlic, then sauté for 10 minutes
to soften. Add the tomatoes and when the liquid starts to bubble,
reduce to a simmer and leave to cook, stirring occasionally (about 20 minutes,
to create a thick sauce), while you make the meatballs.
2 In a bowl, soak the bread in the milk until soft. In another bowl, mix the beef, veal,
parmesan, anchovies, half the parsley and the rest of the onions
and garlic. Then add the soaked bread, lightly squeezing any
excess milk from it first. Mix well and season with salt and
pepper. Mould the mixture into 12-14 meatballs.
3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat.
When hot, add the meatballs, turning (for about 5 minutes) to ensure they colour all
over. If necessary, cook in batches so they are not all squashed together, setting each batch aside
on a plate while you cook the remainder.
4 To finish, remove the meatballs from the pan and set
aside. Pour the tomato sauce into the frying pan over a
medium heat. Put the meatballs back into the pan for a further 4-5 minutes to cook through.
Sprinkle with the remaining parsley before serving.
TIP You can serve the meatballs as they come, or on top of spaghetti.
If you would prefer the latter, cook the pasta according to the packet instructions
until al dente. Drain it in a colander, reserving a cupful of the cooking water to loosen the meatball sauce if necessary,
and then transfer it back to the pan and toss it with a little olive oil
and butter. Put the spaghetti on a serving plate
and top with the meatballs and sauce. Finish with a drizzle of olive
oil and a sprinkle of parmesan.

Tim said: ‘It’s the worst film ever made.
‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this
was loved by incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds of people.
This sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage!

He continued: ‘It has no plot. We would sit there, me and these
other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham Asylum, and I would turn to one
of them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go, ‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go,
‘This is going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever
seen.’
‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?
Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her
in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable.
That’s how terrible it is.’
Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social media after its release
last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.
The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at
the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot,
but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it
out to be. I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel,
and fully committed to the storytelling they presented. It never
deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2.
I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of
the first film’s fandom and the musical elements
were a lot of fun.’

Joker: Folie À Deux director Todd Phillips ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during making of the
$200million flop film, a new report has claimed.
The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film – stars
Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures – but was slammed by
critics and failed to ignite at the box office.
The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical
and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with Phillips’
process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of
the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty
last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say
no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran –
who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio
but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he
told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of
a Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and
Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a
lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per
cent less.
However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.
The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do
with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter
Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the
decision to film in Los Angeles’.
A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get
through to Todd. And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere
the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back
– with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.

in comic book movie history as the film bombed at the box office on opening night.
It has only made $114million worldwide against its $200million budget.
The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized
as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October 4, but
it only raked in $20 million at the domestic box office,
per The Hollywood Reporter.
Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar for
his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn).
However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a comic book movie.
Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of
31% and a critic score of 32%.
The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the domestic box office during the entirety of opening weekend, per The
Hollywood Reporter.
Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around $70
million – but the number has since drastically dropped.
Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters – and eventually landed a little
over $1 billion in the global box office.
The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips –
had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However,
the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200 million.
The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics
and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during
the 76th Venice International Film Festival.
Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score.
The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month
in September, where it earned a 12-minute standing
ovation, per Deadline.

Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said it lacked any
thrill.
The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is best remembered as one of the most subversive and original films of the
last decade, while its hugely anticipated
sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.
Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two
stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.
Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea what to do with her.
Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie
proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order to execute all the hostages who remain in Gaza if he died, a
top Israeli negotiator has claimed.
Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered him by chance, sending a drone to kill the terror leader.

Rafah in late August.
Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the six were ‘cruelly murdered by Hamas just a short time before we
got to them.’
The six dead hostages were identified as Eden Yerushalmi, 24, Carmel Gat, 39, Almog Sarusi,
26, Alex Lubnov, 26, Ori Danino, 25, and Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23.

While the main show historically had 30 hour-long episodes
per season, the broadcaster has increased the order
to 45 episodes each series over the next two years (Tim and Krys on show)
The TV star admitted that while she wishes the incident hadn’t happened she will not apologise for what
she did.
Speaking on Elizabeth Day’s podcast How To Fail, Angel confessed in that moment she saw red: ‘I was the one in the wrong for losing my temper, but do you know what, I will not apologise – he was
so disrespectful in our house, he was so upsetting to me, my family,
and I stand by what I did.
‘If I was to apologise and say «I’m sorry for using bad language and chucking you out» I would just be disingenuous to me.’
She added: ‘Would I like to erase that? Yeah, I’d love to.
But I would also like to erase what he was doing because
my rage just didn’t pop out of nowhere.
‘It grew over time and it was provoked and therefore I’m not
ashamed of what happened in the end, I just wish it hadn’t happened.’
Speaking about the backlash that followed her rant, Angel previously said:
‘The actual incident, it actually happened a long time ago – so it happened about six years ago.
‘We had so many amazing people filming Escape to the Chateau, but in this particular quite small time frame,
we had someone that wasn’t particularly very nice.
‘His behaviour was completely unacceptable, but it didn’t just happen in one little moment, it happened over lots of different
occasions.

‘It was a high point towards the end of filming a series.
We set a lot of stories in parallel activity. We were particularly
busy, and I think that’s why we just didn’t have
the head space to address his behaviour.
Recalling his behaviour she explained: ‘He was not very nice, he was doing these
weird pictures of Dick killing animals and posting them on his Instagram.
He was so horrible with the children.
‘There was this one incident, and I actually truly believe
that because he knew he was caught, I think in my heart
that is why he set up this filming.
‘Because the way that he was acting was how he’d never acted with me before.
You don’t accidentally film someone when you’re not filming.
Completely happened secretively and on purpose.
‘He broke all of the kids’ fishing rods and the next day I was upstairs and he came up in a really very out of
character way for him and was really in my face, in a really angry
like he’d lost it kind of way.
‘I’ve not listened back, it makes me feel a little
bit sick if I do. But obviously all of my friends have,
and they’re like «I can hear you» – he actually took out
what he said – «I can here you gradually getting more angry, more angry, more angry».
‘And then I just say like «get out of my f***ing house».
I can’t even remember what I said. I think I said a really bad
word beginning with c, I think that’s how pissed off I must
have been.’

and people saying «you know what, it’s ok to be human».
‘But when you have children you have to be able to zone
this out because the kids pick up on everything.
‘But for me the children put everything into perspective.
And also this went global. I couldn’t believe the momentum that everything took.
‘I just had to focus on the family, the business. And looking back I probably
did feel a little bit ashamed that the kids would listen to it, or someone at the children’s school would listen to it.
‘But I also think that anyone with a little bit of understanding or common sense, could possibly understand what happened.
‘I just regret that I didn’t do it sooner and probably in a calmer
way. If I’d just taken a breath two weeks beforehand and thought to myself «we need to get him out and get a new person in»,
then I think it would have played out differently.
‘We don’t teach our children to use bad language, but when you’re pushed that far and are seeing red,
it’s kind of hard.
‘I don’t want to say I regret using it. I stand proud for just defending myself at that moment
against his behaviour. I probably wish that
I hadn’t said the c-word. I don’t even like that word.’

Last October, Dick and Angel dodged questions about the hit Channel 4 show’s bullying
scandal during an appearance on Lorraine.
As Lorraine host Christine Lampard made reference to the scandal, Angel explained:
‘You know the saying «Never complain and never explain», I think that
was just the best way.
‘None of it made sense because we had made that
family decision a long time ago that it was the right time for Escape to come to its natural end.’
Dick insisted that it was their decision to leave the
show and it was decided almost two years ago.
He said: ‘As a family, we made a decision that last year was going to be the finale.
We told everyone two years ago, so this, it wasn’t news for us.’
Steering clear of directly addressing the bullying claims, he said:
‘We made the decision just not to get involved in any of the conversations.’ .

The exact nature of the allegations is not known, but the publication reported that three of their former colleagues alleged the couple have clashed with
producers.
A source said at the time: ‘There has been a deteriorating relationship between Two Rivers and

no longer work with Dick and Angel and cannot comment further at the moment.’
Sources close to the couple told MailOnline that their behaviour on set was nothing like their ‘gorgeous’ on screen personas.
A source said: ‘Dick and Angel come across on screen as the most gorgeous and lovely couple, literally like butter wouldn’t melt, but they’re not like that off screen.
‘It’s a full-on show, production is with them at the chateau for weeks so
they can’t hide their real characters – they can’t turn it on for
two hours of recording and then not go back to
their real persona.
‘They’re just spiky and volatile people and,
as you can imagine, that’s a nightmare to work with.’

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is
at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set
to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps
on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to
prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what
any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of
who makes political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes
– and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the
speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to
be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get
made – but you only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency
and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the
policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under
the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling
them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that
Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important
transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the
virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being
put forward by Labor and is opposed by a
growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply,
the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out
major political donors such as Clive Palmer

The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à
Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from
the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations
rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile from
reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take
effect immediately, by the way. It won’t be some sort
of quick-paced power play before the next
election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the
changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to
go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the
proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore
disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench
should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being
advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that
could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

ANGELA HARTNETT’S BEEF & VEAL MEATBALLS
Meatballs are super-quick to make for a weeknight supper and there are many ways to serve them (see tip).
The veal in these gives a lightness to the result, but you
can swap it out for all beef, or flavourful pork mince.
This is a good way to use up any day-old bread hanging around.
The recipe is easy to double up on and freeze so you have a meal for an emergency.
SERVES 4
4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the onion
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
400g tin chopped tomatoes
200g white bread (day old, if possible)
whole milk (enough to soak the bread)
500g beef mince
250g English veal mince
2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve
4 anchovies, finely chopped
2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley
salt and freshly ground black pepper
350g dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; see tip)
1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash of olive oil over a medium heat, then add half
the chopped onion and half the garlic, then sauté for 10 minutes
to soften. Add the tomatoes and when the liquid starts to bubble,
reduce to a simmer and leave to cook, stirring occasionally (about 20 minutes,
to create a thick sauce), while you make the meatballs.
2 In a bowl, soak the bread in the milk until soft. In another bowl, mix the beef, veal,
parmesan, anchovies, half the parsley and the rest of the onions
and garlic. Then add the soaked bread, lightly squeezing any
excess milk from it first. Mix well and season with salt and
pepper. Mould the mixture into 12-14 meatballs.
3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat.
When hot, add the meatballs, turning (for about 5 minutes) to ensure they colour all
over. If necessary, cook in batches so they are not all squashed together, setting each batch aside
on a plate while you cook the remainder.
4 To finish, remove the meatballs from the pan and set
aside. Pour the tomato sauce into the frying pan over a
medium heat. Put the meatballs back into the pan for a further 4-5 minutes to cook through.
Sprinkle with the remaining parsley before serving.
TIP You can serve the meatballs as they come, or on top of spaghetti.
If you would prefer the latter, cook the pasta according to the packet instructions
until al dente. Drain it in a colander, reserving a cupful of the cooking water to loosen the meatball sauce if necessary,
and then transfer it back to the pan and toss it with a little olive oil
and butter. Put the spaghetti on a serving plate
and top with the meatballs and sauce. Finish with a drizzle of olive
oil and a sprinkle of parmesan.
